1 Men det skal ikke være mer mørke for henne som var i nød. Tidligere førte han forakt over landet Sebulon og landet Naftali, men senere har han gjort det strålende, ved havets vei, bortenfor Jordan, hedningenes Galilea.

But there shall be no gloom to her that was in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali; but in the latter time hath he made it glorious, by the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations.

2 Folket som vandret i mørket har sett et stort lys; over dem som bodde i dødsskyggens land, har lyset strålt.

The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.

3 Du har gjort folket tallrikt, du har økt deres glede; de fryder seg foran deg, som når man gleder seg under innhøstningen, som menn jubler når de deler byttet.

Thou hast multiplied the nation, thou hast increased their joy: they joy before thee according to the joy in harvest, as men rejoice when they divide the spoil.

4 For du har brutt åket av deres byrde, staven på deres skulder, undertrykkerens stav, som på Midians dager.

For the yoke of his burden, and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, thou hast broken as in the day of Midian.

5 For hver støvel som trampet i kampens larm, og hvert klesplagg som er rullet i blod, skal brennes, bli til ildens brensel.

For all the armor of the armed man in the tumult, and the garments rolled in blood, shall be for burning, for fuel of fire.

6 For et barn er oss født, en sønn er oss gitt, og herredømmet er lagt på hans skulder; og hans navn skal være Underfull, Rådgiver, Veldig Gud, Evig Far, Fredsfyrste.

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

7 For hans herredømme og fred skal det ikke være ende, på Davids trone og over hans rike, for å opprette og styrke det ved rettferd og rettferdighet fra nå og til evig tid. Herrens, hærskarenes Guds, nidkjærhet skal gjøre dette.

Of the increase of his government and of peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to establish it, and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of Jehovah of hosts will perform this.

8 Herren sendte et ord til Jakob, og det falt på Israel.

The Lord sent a word into Jacob, and it hath lighted upon Israel.

9 Og hele folket skal vite det, både Efraim og Samarias innbyggere, som i stolthet og hovmod sier:

And all the people shall know, `even' Ephraim and the inhabitant of Samaria, that say in pride and in stoutness of heart,

10 Teglsteinene har falt, men vi skal bygge med hugget stein; morbærtrærne er felt, men vi skal sette sedrer i deres sted.

The bricks are fallen, but we will build with hewn stone; the sycomores are cut down, but we will put cedars in their place.

11 Derfor skal Herren opphøye Resins motstandere mot dem og egge opp deres fiender,

Therefore Jehovah will set up on high against him the adversaries of Rezin, and will stir up his enemies,

12 arameerne forfra og filisterne bakfra, og de skal fortære Israel med munnens gap. For alt dette har hans vrede ikke vendt seg bort, men hans hånd er fortsatt utstrakt.

the Syrians before, and the Philistines behind; and they shall devour Israel with open mouth. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

13 Men folket har ikke vendt seg til ham som slo dem, og de har ikke søkt Herren, hærskarenes Gud.

Yet the people have not turned unto him that smote them, neither have they sought Jehovah of hosts.

14 Derfor skal Herren ta bort fra Israel både hode og hale, palmegren og siv, på én dag.

Therefore Jehovah will cut off from Israel head and tail, palm-branch and rush, in one day.

15 Den eldste og den ærefulle er hodet, og profeten som lærer løgn, er halen.

The elder and the honorable man, he is the head; and the prophet that teacheth lies, he is the tail.

16 For lederne av dette folket fører dem vill, og de som blir ledet av dem, går til grunne.

For they that lead this people cause them to err; and they that are led of them are destroyed.

17 Derfor skal Herren ikke glede seg over deres unge menn, og han skal ikke ha medfølelse med deres farløse og enker, for hver og en er ugudelig og en synder, og hver munn taler dårskap. For alt dette har hans vrede ikke vendt seg bort, men hans hånd er fortsatt utstrakt.

Therefore the Lord will not rejoice over their young men, neither will he have compassion on their fatherless and widows; for every one is profane and an evil-doer, and every mouth speaketh folly. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

18 For ugudelighet brenner som ild; den fortærer tistler og tornebusker, ja, den antenner skogens kratt, og de ruller oppover i en røyksøyle.

For wickedness burneth as the fire; it devoureth the briers and thorns; yea, it kindleth in the thickets of the forest, and they roll upward in a column of smoke.

19 Gjennom Herrens, hærskarenes Guds, vrede er landet brent opp, og folket er som ildens brensel; ingen skåner sin bror.

Through the wrath of Jehovah of hosts is the land burnt up; and the people are as the fuel of fire: no man spareth his brother.

20 Man griper i høyre hånd, men er fortsatt sulten; man eter i venstre hånd, men blir ikke mett; hver spiser kjøttet av sin egen arm.

And one shall snatch on the right hand, and be hungry; and he shall eat on the left hand, and they shall not be satisfied: they shall eat every man the flesh of his own arm:

21 Manasse spiser Efraim, og Efraim Manasse, og sammen vender de seg mot Juda. For alt dette har hans vrede ikke vendt seg bort, men hans hånd er fortsatt utstrakt.

Manasseh, Ephraim; and Ephraim, Manasseh; and they together shall be against Judah. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.
