1 Herrens ord kom til Jona, sønn av Amittai, og sa:

Now the word of Jehovah came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,

2 Reis deg, gå til Ninive, den store byen, og tal imot den, for deres ondskap har kommet opp for meg.

Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.

3 Men Jona reiste seg for å flykte til Tarsis bort fra Herrens åsyn. Han dro ned til Jaffa, fant et skip som skulle til Tarsis, betalte billetten og gikk om bord for å dra med dem til Tarsis, bort fra Herrens åsyn.

But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of Jehovah; and he went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of Jehovah.

4 Men Herren sendte en mektig vind over havet, og det ble en voldsom storm på havet, så skipet holdt på å brytes i stykker.

But Jehovah sent out a great wind upon the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken.

5 Sjømennene ble redde, og ropte hver til sin gud, og kastet varene som var på skipet, over bord for å lette det. Men Jona hadde gått ned i skipets innerste deler og lå der og sov tungt.

Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god; and they cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it unto them. But Jonah was gone down into the innermost parts of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep.

6 Da kom skipsføreren til ham og sa: Hva mener du med å sove sånn? Stå opp, kall på din Gud! Kanskje Gud vil tenke på oss, slik at vi ikke går under.

So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not.

7 Og de sa til hverandre: Kom, la oss kaste lodd, så vi kan få vite hvem som er årsaken til denne ulykken som har rammet oss. Så kastet de lodd, og loddet falt på Jona.

And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.

8 Da sa de til ham: Fortell oss, vi ber deg, for hvis skyld denne ulykken har rammet oss. Hva er ditt yrke? Hvor kommer du fra? Hva er ditt land, og av hvilket folk er du?

Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us; what is thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou?

9 Han sa til dem: Jeg er en hebreer, og jeg frykter Herren, himmelens Gud, som har skapt havet og det tørre land.

And he said unto them, I am a Hebrew; and I fear Jehovah, the God of heaven, who hath made the sea and the dry land.

10 Da ble mennene svært redde og sa til ham: Hva er det du har gjort? For mennene visste at han flyktet bort fra Herrens åsyn, fordi han hadde fortalt dem det.

Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him, What is this that thou hast done? For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of Jehovah, because he had told them.

11 Så sa de til ham: Hva skal vi gjøre med deg, for at havet skal bli rolig for oss? For havet ble mer og mer stormfullt.

Then said they unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may be calm unto us? for the sea grew more and more tempestuous.

12 Han sa til dem: Ta meg opp og kast meg i havet, da vil havet bli rolig for dere. For jeg vet at det er på grunn av meg denne store stormen har kommet over dere.

And he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you.

13 Mennene rodde likevel hardt for å komme tilbake til land, men de klarte det ikke, for havet ble mer og mer stormfullt mot dem.

Nevertheless the men rowed hard to get them back to the land; but they could not: for the sea grew more and more tempestuous against them.

14 Derfor ropte de til Herren og sa: Vi ber deg, Herre, la oss ikke gå under for denne mannens liv, og legg ikke uskyldig blod på oss, for du, Herre, har gjort som det har behaget deg.

Wherefore they cried unto Jehovah, and said, We beseech thee, O Jehovah, we beseech thee, let us not perish for this man's life, and lay not upon us innocent blood; for thou, O Jehovah, hast done as it pleased thee.

15 Så tok de Jona og kastet ham i havet, og havet sluttet med sitt raseri.

So they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea; and the sea ceased from its raging.

16 Da fryktet mennene Herren meget, og de ofret et offer til Herren og gjorde løfter.

Then the men feared Jehovah exceedingly; and they offered a sacrifice unto Jehovah, and made vows.

17 Og Herren forberedte en stor fisk til å sluke Jona, og Jona var i fiskens mage i tre dager og tre netter.

And Jehovah prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah; and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
