1 Syner av Obadja. Så sier Herren Gud om Edom: Vi har fått budskap fra Herren, og en utsending er sendt blant folkeslagene som sier: Reis dere, la oss dra opp mot henne til krig.

The vision of Obadiah. Thus saith the Lord Jehovah concerning Edom: We have heard tidings from Jehovah, and an ambassador is sent among the nations, `saying', Arise ye, and let us rise up against her in battle.

2 Se, jeg har gjort deg liten blant folkeslagene, du er svært foraktet.

Behold, I have made thee small among the nations: thou art greatly despised.

3 Ditt hjertes stolthet har bedratt deg, du som bor i klippekløftene, og som har ditt opphold høyt oppe; som sier i ditt hjerte: Hvem skal trekke meg ned til jorden?

The pride of thy heart hath deceived thee, O thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high; that saith in his heart, Who shall bring me down to the ground?

4 Selv om du stiger høyt som ørnen, og selv om ditt rede er satt blant stjernene, vil jeg trekke deg ned derfra, sier Herren.

Though thou mount on high as the eagle, and though thy nest be set among the stars, I will bring thee down from thence, saith Jehovah.

5 Om tyver kom til deg, om røvere om natten (hvor er du utslettet!), ville de ikke stjele bare til de hadde fått nok? Om vinplukkere kom til deg, ville de ikke la noen druer bli igjen?

If thieves came to thee, if robbers by night (how art thou cut off!), would they not steal `only' till they had enough? if grape-gatherers came to thee, would they not leave some gleaning grapes?

6 Hvordan er Esaus skjulte skatter blitt avslørt! Hvordan er hans hemmeligheter blitt oppsøkt!

How are `the things of' Esau searched! how are his hidden treasures sought out!

7 Alle dine allierte har drevet deg til grensen; de som var i fred med deg har bedratt deg og overvunnet deg; de som spiser ditt brød har lagt en felle under deg: det er ingen forstand i ham.

All the men of thy confederacy have brought thee on thy way, even to the border: the men that were at peace with thee have deceived thee, and prevailed against thee; `they that eat' thy bread lay a snare under thee: there is no understanding in him.

8 Skal jeg ikke den dagen, sier Herren, ødelegge de vise i Edom, og forstanden på Esaus fjell?

Shall I not in that day, saith Jehovah, destroy the wise men out of Edom, and understanding out of the mount of Esau?

9 Og dine sterke menn, Teman, skal bli skremt, slik at hver eneste mann på Esaus fjell blir utslettet ved drap.

And thy mighty men, O Teman, shall be dismayed, to the end that every one may be cut off from the mount of Esau by slaughter.

10 For den vold du gjorde mot din bror Jakob, skal skam dekke deg, og du skal bli utryddet for alltid.

For the violence done to thy brother Jacob, shame shall cover thee, and thou shalt be cut off for ever.

11 På den dagen du sto på den andre siden, på den dagen da fremmede bar bort hans rikdom, og utlendinger gikk inn i hans porter og kastet lodd om Jerusalem, var du også som en av dem.

In the day that thou stoodest on the other side, in the day that strangers carried away his substance, and foreigners entered into his gates, and cast lots upon Jerusalem, even thou wast as one of them.

12 Men se ikke ned på din brors dag i hans ulykkes dag, og gled deg ikke over Judas barn på deres undergangs dag; og snakk ikke hovmodig på nødens dag.

But look not thou on the day of thy brother in the day of his disaster, and rejoice not over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction; neither speak proudly in the day of distress.

13 Gå ikke inn i mitt folks port på deres ulykke dag; ja, se ikke på hans lidelse på deres ulykke dag, og legg ikke hånd på hans eiendeler på deres ulykke dag.

Enter not into the gate of my people in the day of their calamity; yea, look not thou on their affliction in the day of their calamity, neither lay ye `hands' on their substance in the day of their calamity.

14 Stå ikke ved veikrysset for å utrydde dem som slipper unna; og overgi ikke dem som er igjen på nødens dag.

And stand thou not in the crossway, to cut off those of his that escape; and deliver not up those of his that remain in the day of distress.

15 For Herrens dag er nær over alle folkeslag: som du har gjort, skal det bli gjort mot deg; det du har gjort, skal komme tilbake over ditt eget hode.

For the day of Jehovah is near upon all the nations: as thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee; thy dealing shall return upon thine own head.

16 For som dere har drukket på mitt hellige fjell, skal alle folkeslag drikke stadig; ja, de skal drikke og sluke, og bli som om de aldri hadde vært.

For as ye have drunk upon my holy mountain, so shall all the nations drink continually; yea, they shall drink, and swallow down, and shall be as though they had not been.

17 Men på Sions berg skal det være en rest som slipper unna, og det skal være hellig; og Jakobs hus skal ta i eie sine eiendeler.

But in mount Zion there shall be those that escape, and it shall be holy; and the house of Jacob shall possess their possessions.

18 Og Jakobs hus skal være en ild, og Josefs hus en flamme, og Esaus hus som halm; de skal brenne blant dem og fortære dem, og ingen skal overleve i Esaus hus; for Herren har talt det.

And the house of Jacob shall be a fire, and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau for stubble, and they shall burn among them, and devour them; and there shall not be any remaining to the house of Esau; for Jehovah hath spoken it.

19 De fra Sydlandet skal ta i eie Esaus fjell, og de fra lavlandet skal ta filisterne; de skal ta Efraims mark og Samarias mark, og Benjamin skal ta Gilead.

And they of the South shall possess the mount of Esau, and they of the lowland the Philistines; and they shall possess the field of Ephraim, and the field of Samaria; and Benjamin `shall possess' Gilead.

20 De bortførte fra denne hær, av Israels barn, som er blant kanaaneerne, skal ta i eie inntil Sarepta; og de bortførte fra Jerusalem, som er i Sefarad, skal ta byene i Sydlandet.

And the captives of this host of the children of Israel, that are `among' the Canaanites, `shall possess' even unto Zarephath; and the captives of Jerusalem, that are in Sepharad, shall possess the cities of the South.

21 Frelsere skal dra opp på Sions berg for å dømme Esaus fjell; og riket skal tilhøre Herren.

And saviours shall come up on mount Zion to judge the mount of Esau; and the kingdom shall be Jehovah's.
