1 Efraims menn sa til ham: Hvorfor har du behandlet oss slik, at du ikke kalte på oss da du gikk for å kjempe mot Midian? Og de kjeftet skarpt på ham.

And the men of Ephraim said unto him, Why hast thou served us thus, that thou calledst us not, when thou wentest to fight with Midian? And they did chide with him sharply.

2 Og han sa til dem: Hva har jeg nå gjort i forhold til dere? Er ikke det dere har sanket av druer i Efraim bedre enn hele innhøstingen i Abieser?

And he said unto them, What have I now done in comparison with you? Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abiezer?

3 Gud har gitt dere Midians fyrster, Oreb og Zeeb, i deres hender. Hva kunne jeg gjøre i forhold til dere? Da ble deres vrede mot ham dempet, da han sa dette.

God hath delivered into your hand the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb: and what was I able to do in comparison with you? Then their anger was abated toward him, when he had said that.

4 Og Gideon kom til Jordan og krysset over, han og de tre hundre menn som var med ham, utmattet, men forfulgte fortsatt.

And Gideon came to the Jordan, `and' passed over, he, and the three hundred men that were with him, faint, yet pursuing.

5 Og han sa til mennene i Sukkot: Jeg ber dere, gi brød til folket som følger meg, for de er utmattet, og jeg forfølger Zebah og Salmunna, Midians konger.

And he said unto the men of Succoth, Give, I pray you, loaves of bread unto the people that follow me; for they are faint, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian.

6 Og fyrster i Sukkot sa: Er Zebahs og Salmunnas hender nå i din hånd, at vi skulle gi brød til din hær?

And the princes of Succoth said, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thy hand, that we should give bread unto thine army?

7 Og Gideon sa: Derfor, når Herren har gitt Zebah og Salmunna i min hånd, vil jeg rive kjøttet deres med torner fra ørkenen og tistler.

And Gideon said, Therefore when Jehovah hath delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand, then I will tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers.

8 Og han dro videre til Pnuel og talte til dem på samme måte; og Pnuels menn svarte ham som Sukkots menn hadde gjort.

And he went up thence to Penuel, and spake unto them in like manner; and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered.

9 Og han sa også til mennene i Pnuel: Når jeg kommer tilbake i fred, vil jeg rive ned dette tårnet.

And he spake also unto the men of Penuel, saying, When I come again in peace, I will break down this tower.

10 Nå var Zebah og Salmunna i Karkor, og hæren deres med dem, omkring femten tusen menn, alt som var igjen av hele hæren til Østens barn. For det falt hundre og tjue tusen menn som trakk sverd.

Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their hosts with them, about fifteen thousand men, all that were left of all the host of the children of the east; for there fell a hundred and twenty thousand men that drew sword.

11 Og Gideon dro opp veien til de som bodde i telt øst for Nobah og Jogbaha og slo hæren; for hæren følte seg trygge.

And Gideon went up by the way of them that dwelt in tents on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and smote the host; for the host was secure.

12 Og Zebah og Salmunna flyktet, og han forfulgte dem og fanget de to kongene i Midian, Zebah og Salmunna, og oppløste hele hæren.

And Zebah and Zalmunna fled; and he pursued after them; and he took the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and discomfited all the host.

13 Og Gideon, Joasj sønn, vendte tilbake fra slaget fra veien ved Heres' stigning.

And Gideon the son of Joash returned from the battle from the ascent of Heres.

14 Og han fanget en ung mann fra Sukkots menn og forhørte seg med ham; og han beskrev for ham Sukkots fyrster og eldste, syttisyv menn.

And he caught a young man of the men of Succoth, and inquired of him: and he described for him the princes of Succoth, and the elders thereof, seventy and seven men.

15 Og han kom til Sukkots menn og sa: Se, Zebah og Salmunna, som dere spottet meg over og sa: Er Zebahs og Salmunnas hender nå i din hånd, at vi skulle gi brød til dine slitne menn?

And he came unto the men of Succoth, and said, Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, concerning whom ye did taunt me, saying, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thy hand, that we should give bread unto thy men that are weary?

16 Og han tok byens eldste, og ørkenens torner og tistler, og med dem ga han mennene i Sukkot en lekse.

And he took the elders of the city, and thorns of the wilderness and briers, and with them he taught the men of Succoth.

17 Og han brøt ned tårnet i Pnuel og drepte mennene i byen.

And he brake down the tower of Penuel, and slew the men of the city.

18 Så sa han til Zebah og Salmunna: Hva slags menn var de dere drepte på Tabor? Og de svarte: Som du er, slik var de; hver enkelt lignet en konges barn.

Then said he unto Zebah and Zalmunna, What manner of men were they whom ye slew at Tabor? And they answered, As thou art, so were they; each one resembled the children of a king.

19 Og han sa: De var mine brødre, mine egen mors sønner. Så sant Herren lever, hvis dere hadde spart dem, ville jeg ikke ha drept dere.

And he said, They were my brethren, the sons of my mother: as Jehovah liveth, if ye had saved them alive, I would not slay you.

20 Og han sa til Jeter, sin førstefødte: Reis deg, og drep dem. Men gutten trakk ikke sitt sverd, for han var redd fordi han fortsatt var ung.

And he said unto Jether his first-born, Up, and slay them. But the youth drew not his sword; for he feared, because he was yet a youth.

21 Da sa Zebah og Salmunna: Reis deg, og fall over oss; for som mannen er, så er hans styrke. Og Gideon reiste seg og drepte Zebah og Salmunna, og tok halvmånene som var på kamelenes halser.

Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, Rise thou, and fall upon us; for as the man is, so is his strength. And Gideon arose, and slew Zebah and Zalmunna, and took the crescents that were on their camels' necks.

22 Så sa Israels menn til Gideon: Hersk over oss, både du, din sønn og din sønnesønn, for du har reddet oss ut av Midians hånd.

Then the men of Israel said unto Gideon, Rule thou over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son's son also; for thou hast saved us out of the hand of Midian.

23 Og Gideon sa til dem: Jeg vil ikke herske over dere, heller ikke min sønn; Herren skal herske over dere.

And Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: Jehovah shall rule over you.

24 Og Gideon sa til dem: Jeg vil be dere om en ting, at hver av dere gir meg gullringene av sin hærfang. (For de hadde gullringer, siden de var ismaelitter.)

And Gideon said unto them, I would make a request of you, that ye would give me every man the ear-rings of his spoil. (For they had golden ear-rings, because they were Ishmaelites.)

25 Og de svarte: Vi vil gjerne gi dem. Og de spredte et klede, og hver mann kastet gullringene av sin hærfang der.

And they answered, We will willingly give them. And they spread a garment, and did cast therein every man the ear-rings of his spoil.

26 Og vekten av gullringene han ba om, var tusen og syv hundre sjekel gull, i tillegg til halvmåner, anhengene og purpurklærne som var på Midian-kongene, og i tillegg til kjedene som var rundt kamelenes halser.

And the weight of the golden ear-rings that he requested was a thousand and seven hundred `shekels' of gold, besides the crescents, and the pendants, and the purple raiment that was on the kings of Midian, and besides the chains that were about their camels' necks.

27 Og Gideon lagde en efod av dem og satte den i sin by, i Ofra; og hele Israel horerte etter den der, og det ble en snare for Gideon og hans hus.

And Gideon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah: and all Israel played the harlot after it there; and it became a snare unto Gideon, and to his house.

28 Så ble Midian undertrykt foran Israels barn, og de løftet ikke hodet mer. Og landet hadde fred i førti år mens Gideon levde.

So Midian was subdued before the children of Israel, and they lifted up their heads no more. And the land had rest forty years in the days of Gideon.

29 Og Jerubba'al, Joasjs sønn, dro og bodde i sitt eget hus.

And Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and dwelt in his own house.

30 Og Gideon hadde sytti sønner født av hans kropp, for han hadde mange koner.

And Gideon had threescore and ten sons of his body begotten; for he had many wives.

31 Og hans medhustru som var i Sikem, fødte ham også en sønn, og han kalte ham Abimelek.

And his concubine that was in Shechem, she also bare him a son, and he called his name Abimelech.

32 Og Gideon, Joasjs sønn, døde i en god alderdom og ble gravlagt i sin far Joasjs grav, i Ofra hos Abiesrittene.

And Gideon the son of Joash died in a good old age, and was buried in the sepulchre of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

33 Og det skjedde, så snart Gideon var død, at Israels barn igjen vendte seg bort og horete etter Baalim, og gjorde Baal-berit til sin gud.

And it came to pass, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and played the harlot after the Baalim, and made Baal-berith their god.

34 Og Israels barn husket ikke Herren sin Gud, som hadde befridd dem fra alle fiender rundt omkring.

And the children of Israel remembered not Jehovah their God, who had delivered them out of the hand of all their enemies on every side;

35 De viste heller ingen godhet mot Jerubba'als hus, altså Gideons, i forhold til alt det gode han hadde gjort for Israel.

neither showed they kindness to the house of Jerubbaal, `who is' Gideon, according to all the goodness which he had showed unto Israel.
