1 Abimelek, Jerubbaals sønn, dro til Sikem til sine morbrødre og snakket med dem og med hele familien til sin mors far og sa,

And Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem unto his mother's brethren, and spake with them, and with all the family of the house of his mother's father, saying,

2 «Snakk med alle mennene i Sikem og si: Hva er best for dere? At alle Jerubbaals sytti sønner hersker over dere, eller at én hersker over dere? Husk at jeg er deres kjøtt og blod.»

Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the men of Shechem, Whether is better for you, that all the sons of Jerubbaal, who are threescore and ten persons, rule over you, or that one rule over you? remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.

3 Hans morbrødre snakket om ham til alle mennene i Sikem, og de lot seg overtale til å følge Abimelek, for de sa: «Han er vår bror.»

And his mother's brethren spake of him in the ears of all the men of Shechem all these words: and their hearts inclined to follow Abimelech; for they said, He is our brother.

4 De ga ham sytti sølvstykker fra Baal-Berits hus, og med dem leide Abimelek lette og løse menn som fulgte ham.

And they gave him threescore and ten `pieces' of silver out of the house of Baal-berith, wherewith Abimelech hired vain and light fellows, who followed him.

5 Han dro til sin fars hus i Ofra og drepte sine brødre, Jerubbaals sytti sønner, på én stein. Men Jotam, den yngste av Jerubbaals sønner, ble igjen, for han hadde gjemt seg.

And he went unto his father's house at Ophrah, and slew his brethren the sons of Jerubbaal, being threescore and ten persons, upon one stone: but Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left; for he hid himself.

6 Alle mennene i Sikem og alle fra Millohuset samlet seg og gjorde Abimelek til konge ved eiketreet ved søylen i Sikem.

And all the men of Shechem assembled themselves together, and all the house of Millo, and went and made Abimelech king, by the oak of the pillar that was in Shechem.

7 Da Jotam fikk høre om dette, gikk han og stilte seg på toppen av Gerisim-fjellet, løftet sin røst og ropte: «Hør på meg, dere Sikemisitter, så Gud kan høre på dere.

And when they told it to Jotham, he went and stood on the top of mount Gerizim, and lifted up his voice, and cried, and said unto them, Hearken unto me, ye men of Shechem, that God may hearken unto you.

8 Trærne gikk engang ut for å salve en konge over seg, og de sa til oliventreet: 'Regjer over oss.'

The trees went forth on a time to anoint a king over them; and they said unto the olive-tree, Reign thou over us.

9 Men oliventreet svarte: 'Skal jeg gi avkall på min fedme, som Gud og mennesker æres ved, for å sveve over trærne?'

But the olive-tree said unto them, Should I leave my fatness, wherewith by me they honor God and man, and go to wave to and fro over the trees?

10 Da sa trærne til fikentreet: 'Kom du og regjer over oss.'

And the trees said to the fig-tree, Come thou, and reign over us.

11 Men fikentreet svarte: 'Skal jeg gi avkall på min sødme og min gode frukt for å sveve over trærne?'

But the fig-tree said unto them, Should I leave my sweetness, and my good fruit, and go to wave to and fro over the trees?

12 Så sa trærne til vintreet: 'Kom du og regjer over oss.'

And the trees said unto the vine, Come thou, and reign over us.

13 Men vintreet svarte: 'Skal jeg gi avkall på min nye vin, som gleder Gud og mennesker, for å sveve over trærne?'

And the vine said unto them, Should I leave my new wine, which cheereth God and man, and go to wave to and fro over the trees?

14 Da sa alle trærne til tornebusken: 'Kom du og regjer over oss.'

Then said all the trees unto the bramble, Come thou, and reign over us.

15 Tornebusken sa til trærne: 'Hvis det er i sannhet dere salver meg til konge over dere, kom og finn ly i min skygge. Hvis ikke, la det komme ild ut fra tornebusken og fortære Libanons sedrer.'

And the bramble said unto the trees, If in truth ye anoint me king over you, then come and take refuge in my shade; and if not, let fire come out of the bramble, and devour the cedars of Lebanon.

16 Så hvis dere har handlet rett og oppriktig ved å gjøre Abimelek til konge, og hvis dere har behandlet Jerubbaal og hans hus vel, og gjort mot ham det han fortjente,

Now therefore, if ye have dealt truly and uprightly, in that ye have made Abimelech king, and if ye have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house, and have done unto him according to the deserving of his hands;

17 (for min far kjempet for dere og risikerte sitt liv og reddet dere fra midianittenes hånd).

(for my father fought for you, and adventured his life, and delivered you out of the hand of Midian:

18 Men i dag har dere reist dere mot min fars hus og drept hans sytti sønner på én stein, og gjort Abimelek, sønnen til hans trellkvinne, til konge over Sikems menn fordi han er deres bror.

and ye are risen up against my father's house this day, and have slain his sons, threescore and ten persons, upon one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his maid-servant, king over the men of Shechem, because he is your brother);

19 Hvis dere da har handlet rett og oppriktig mot Jerubbaal og hans hus i dag, gled dere i Abimelek, og la ham også glede seg i dere.

if ye then have dealt truly and uprightly with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, then rejoice ye in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you:

20 Men hvis ikke, la det komme ild ut fra Abimelek og fortære Sikems menn og Millohuset; og la det komme ild ut fra Sikems menn og fra Millohuset og fortære Abimelek.

but if not, let fire come out from Abimelech, and devour the men of Shechem, and the house of Millo; and let fire come out from the men of Shechem, and from the house of Millo, and devour Abimelech.

21 Jotam flyktet og rømte til Beer og bodde der av frykt for sin bror Abimelek.

And Jotham ran away, and fled, and went to Beer, and dwelt there, for fear of Abimelech his brother.

22 Abimelek hersket tre år over Israel.

And Abimelech was prince over Israel three years.

23 Gud sendte en ond ånd mellom Abimelek og mennene i Sikem, og mennene i Sikem svek Abimelek.

And God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech:

24 For å hevne det blodet som ble utgytt av Jerubbaals sytti sønner, og legge skylden på Abimelek, deres bror, som drepte dem, og på mennene i Sikem, som støttet ham i å drepe sine brødre.

that the violence done to the threescore and ten sons of Jerubbaal might come, and that their blood might be laid upon Abimelech their brother, who slew them, and upon the men of Shechem, who strengthened his hands to slay his brethren.

25 Mennene i Sikem satte folk i bakhold på fjelltoppene, og de plyndret alle som kom forbi: og det ble fortalt til Abimelek.

And the men of Shechem set liers-in-wait for him on the tops of the mountains, and they robbed all that came along that way by them: and it was told Abimelech.

26 Gaal, Ebeds sønn, kom med sine brødre til Sikem, og mennene i Sikem satte tillit til ham.

And Gaal the son of Ebed came with his brethren, and went over to Shechem; and the men of Shechem put their trust in him.

27 De gikk ut i marken, høstet vinmarkene sine, tråkket druene, holdt fest, og gikk inn i sin guds hus, der de spiste, drakk og forbannet Abimelek.

And they went out into the field, and gathered their vineyards, and trod `the grapes', and held festival, and went into the house of their god, and did eat and drink, and cursed Abimelech.

28 Gaal, Ebeds sønn, sa: 'Hvem er Abimelek, og hvem er Sikem, at vi skulle tjene ham? Er han ikke Jerubbaals sønn, og Zebul hans talsmann? Tjen heller mennene i Hamor, Sikkems far: Hvorfor skulle vi tjene ham?'

And Gaal the son of Ebed said, Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? is not he the son of Jerubbaal? and Zebul his officer? serve ye the men of Hamor the father of Shechem: but why should we serve him?

29 Om bare denne folket var i min hånd! Da skulle jeg rydde bort Abimelek. Han sa til Abimelek: 'Få hæren din til å vokse, og kom ut.'

And would that this people were under my hand! then would I remove Abimelech. And he said to Abimelech, Increase thine army, and come out.

30 Da Zebul, byens hersker, hørte Gaals, Ebeds sønns, ord, ble han meget sint.

And when Zebul the ruler of the city heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, his anger was kindled.

31 Han sendte snikende budbringere til Abimelek og sa: 'Se, Gaal, Ebeds sønn, og hans brødre har kommet til Sikem; og nå setter de byen opp mot deg.'

And he sent messengers unto Abimelech craftily, saying, Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed and his brethren are come to Shechem; and, behold, they constrain the city `to take part' against thee.

32 Nå, stå opp om natten, du og de folk som er med deg, og legg dere i bakhold på marken.

Now therefore, up by night, thou and the people that are with thee, and lie in wait in the field:

33 Og når morgenen kommer, så snart solen stiger opp, stå tidlig opp og angrip byen; og når han og de folk som er med ham kommer ut mot dere, gjør med dem som du finner passende.'

and it shall be, that in the morning, as soon as the sun is up, thou shalt rise early, and rush upon the city; and, behold, when he and the people that are with him come out against thee, then mayest thou do to them as thou shalt find occasion.

34 Abimelek stod opp om natten og alle de folkene som var med ham, og de la seg i bakhold i fire grupper mot Sikem.

And Abimelech rose up, and all the people that were with him, by night, and they laid wait against Shechem in four companies.

35 Gaal, Ebeds sønn, gikk ut og stod ved inngangen til byporten: Abimelek og folket som var med ham, reiste seg fra bakholdet.

And Gaal the son of Ebed went out, and stood in the entrance of the gate of the city: and Abimelech rose up, and the people that were with him, from the ambushment.

36 Da Gaal så folket, sa han til Zebul: 'Se, det kommer folk ned fra fjelltoppene.' Men Zebul sa til ham: 'Du ser skyggen av fjellene som om de var mennesker.'

And when Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, Behold, there come people down from the tops of the mountains. And Zebul said unto him, Thou seest the shadow of the mountains as if they were men.

37 Gaal snakket igjen og sa: 'Se, det kommer folk ned fra midten av landet, og en annen gruppe kommer fra eiken Meonenim.'

And Gaal spake again and said, See, there come people down by the middle of the land, and one company cometh by the way of the oak of Meonenim.

38 Da sa Zebul til ham: 'Hvor er nå din munn, du som sa: Hvem er Abimelek, at vi skulle tjene ham? Er dette ikke folket du foraktet? Gå nå ut og kjemp mot dem!'

Then said Zebul unto him, Where is now thy mouth, that thou saidst, Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him? is not this the people that thou hast despised? go out now, I pray, and fight with them.

39 Gaal gikk ut i spissen for Sikems menn og kjempet mot Abimelek.

And Gaal went out before the men of Shechem, and fought with Abimelech.

40 Abimelek jaget ham, og han flyktet for ham, og mange ble såret like til byporten.

And Abimelech chased him, and he fled before him, and there fell many wounded, even unto the entrance of the gate.

41 Abimelek ble boende i Aruma, og Zebul drev ut Gaal og hans brødre, så de ikke kunne bo i Sikem.

And Abimelech dwelt at Arumah: and Zebul drove out Gaal and his brethren, that they should not dwell in Shechem.

42 Neste dag gikk folket ut på markene, og det ble fortalt til Abimelek.

And it came to pass on the morrow, that the people went out into the field; and they told Abimelech.

43 Han tok folket sitt, delte dem i tre grupper og la seg i bakhold på marken; da han så folket komme ut av byen, stormet han mot dem og slo dem.

And he took the people, and divided them into three companies, and laid wait in the field; and he looked, and, behold, the people came forth out of the city; And he rose up against them, and smote them.

44 Abimelek og gruppene som var med ham rykket fram og stilte seg ved byporten, mens de to andre gruppene angrep alle som var i markene og slo dem.

And Abimelech, and the companies that were with him, rushed forward, and stood in the entrance of the gate of the city: and the two companies rushed upon all that were in the field, and smote them.

45 Abimelek kjempet mot byen hele dagen; han inntok byen, drepte folket der, rev byen ned og strødde den med salt.

And Abimelech fought against the city all that day; and he took the city, and slew the people that were therein: and he beat down the city, and sowed it with salt.

46 Da alle mennene i tårnet i Sikem hørte om dette, flyktet de til det sterke rommet i Elberits hus.

And when all the men of the tower of Shechem heard thereof, they entered into the stronghold of the house of Elberith.

47 Det ble fortalt Abimelek at alle mennene i tårnet i Sikem hadde samlet seg.

And it was told Abimelech that all the men of the tower of Shechem were gathered together.

48 Abimelek dro opp til Salmons fjell med alt folket som var med ham; han tok en øks i hånden, hogde en gren fra et tre, la den på skulderen og sa til folket som var med ham: 'Det dere ser at jeg gjør, gjør dere i hast og gjør som jeg.'

And Abimelech gat him up to mount Zalmon, he and all the people that were with him; and Abimelech took an axe in his hand, and cut down a bough from the trees, and took it up, and laid it on his shoulder: and he said unto the people that were with him, What ye have seen me do, make haste, and do as I have done.

49 Alle tok sine grener og fulgte Abimelek, la dem i det sterke rommet og satte det i brann med dem inne, så alle mennene i tårnet i Sikem døde, omkring tusen menn og kvinner.

And all the people likewise cut down every man his bough, and followed Abimelech, and put them to the stronghold, and set the stronghold on fire upon them; so that all the men of the tower of Shechem died also, about a thousand men and women.

50 Så dro Abimelek til Tebes, slo leir mot Tebes og inntok den.

Then went Abimelech to Thebez, and encamped against Thebez, and took it.

51 Det var et sterkt tårn inne i byen, og alle mennene og kvinnene, hele byens innbyggere, flyktet dit, stengte dørene og gikk opp på taket av tårnet.

But there was a strong tower within the city, and thither fled all the men and women, and all they of the city, and shut themselves in, and gat them up to the roof of the tower.

52 Abimelek kom til tårnet, kjempet mot det og nærmet seg tårndøren for å sette ild på den.

And Abimelech came unto the tower, and fought against it, and drew near unto the door of the tower to burn it with fire.

53 Men en kvinne kastet en øvre kvernstein på Abimeleks hode og knuste hans hodeskalle.

And a certain woman cast an upper millstone upon Abimelech's head, and brake his skull.

54 Han ropte raskt til sin våpenbærer og sa til ham: 'Trekk ditt sverd og drep meg, så man ikke skal si om meg at en kvinne drepte ham.' Hans unge mann stakk ham gjennom, og han døde.

Then he called hastily unto the young man his armorbearer, and said unto him, Draw thy sword, and kill me, that men say not of me, A woman slew him. And his young man thrust him through, and he died.

55 Da Israels menn så at Abimelek var død, dro de hver til sitt sted.

And when the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, they departed every man unto his place.

56 Således gjengjeldte Gud Abimeleks ondskap, det han gjorde mot sin far ved å drepe sine sytti brødre.

Thus God requited the wickedness of Abimelech, which he did unto his father, in slaying his seventy brethren;

57 Og all ondskapen som Sikems menn hadde gjort, lot Gud komme tilbake over deres egne hoder, og Jotams, Jerubbaals sønns, forbannelse kom over dem.

and all the wickedness of the men of Shechem did God requite upon their heads: and upon them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.
