1 Kanaanitten, kongen av Arad, som bodde i sør, hørte at Israel kom langs veien til Atarim. Han kjempet mot Israel og tok noen av dem til fange.

And the Canaanite, the king of Arad, who dwelt in the South, heard tell that Israel came by the way of Atharim; and he fought against Israel, and took some of them captive.

2 Da avla Israel et løfte til Herren og sa: Hvis du virkelig gir folket i min hånd, vil jeg fullstendig ødelegge byene deres.

And Israel vowed a vow unto Jehovah, and said, If thou wilt indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities.

3 Og Herren hørte Israels bønn og overgav kanaanittene i deres hender. De ødela dem og deres byer fullstendig; og stedet fikk navnet Horma.

And Jehovah hearkened to the voice of Israel, and delivered up the Canaanites; and they utterly destroyed them and their cities: and the name of the place was called Hormah.

4 De dro så fra fjellet Hor mot Rødehavet for å gå rundt Edoms land. Men folk ble svært motløse på veien.

And they journeyed from mount Hor by the way to the Red Sea, to compass the land of Edom: and the soul of the people was much discouraged because of the way.

5 Folk talte mot Gud og mot Moses: Hvorfor har dere ført oss opp fra Egypt for å dø i ørkenen? For her er det ikke brød og ikke vann; og vi avskyr dette usle brødet.

And the people spake against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, and there is no water; and our soul loatheth this light bread.

6 Og Herren sendte giftige slanger blant folket, og de bet dem, og mange døde.

And Jehovah sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died.

7 Folket kom til Moses og sa: Vi har syndet, for vi har talt mot Herren og mot deg. Be Herren ta bort slangene fra oss. Og Moses ba for folket.

And the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, because we have spoken against Jehovah, and against thee; pray unto Jehovah, that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people.

8 Og Herren sa til Moses: Lag en slange av metall og sett den på en stang. Alle som blir bitt og ser på den, skal leve.

And Jehovah said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a standard: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he seeth it, shall live.

9 Moses laget en slange av bronse og satte den på en stang. Da noen ble bitt av en slange og så på bronseslangen, levde de.

And Moses made a serpent of brass, and set it upon the standard: and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he looked unto the serpent of brass, he lived.

10 Så dro Israels barn videre og slo leir i Obot.

And the children of Israel journeyed, and encamped in Oboth.

11 De dro fra Obot og slo leir ved Ije-Abarim i ørkenen foran Moab, mot soloppgangen.

And they journeyed from Oboth, and encamped at Iyeabarim, in the wilderness which is before Moab, toward the sunrising.

12 Derfra dro de og slo leir i dalen Zered.

From thence they journeyed, and encamped in the valley of Zered.

13 Derfra dro de og slo leir på den andre siden av elven Arnon, i ørkenen som kommer fra amorittenes grense. For Arnon er Moabs grense, mellom Moab og amorittene.

From thence they journeyed, and encamped on the other side of the Arnon, which is in the wilderness, that cometh out of the border of the Amorites: for the Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites.

14 Derfor står det i boken om Herrens kriger: Vaheb i Sufa, og dalene til Arnon,

Wherefore it is said in the book of the Wars of Jehovah, Vaheb in Suphah, And the valleys of the Arnon,

15 og skrenten til dalene som heller mot Ar og støtter seg opp til Moabs grense.

And the slope of the valleys That inclineth toward the dwelling of Ar, And leaneth upon the border of Moab.

16 Derfra dro de til Beer, brønnen som Herren sa til Moses: Samle folket, så skal jeg gi dem vann.

And from thence `they journeyed' to Beer: that is the well whereof Jehovah said unto Moses, Gather the people together, and I will give them water.

17 Da sang Israel denne sangen: Kilder, spring fram! Syng til den!

Then sang Israel this song: Spring up, O well; sing ye unto it:

18 Brønnen som høvdingene gravde, som folkets edle hogget ut med septer og staver. Derfra dro de til Mattana,

The well, which the princes digged, Which the nobles of the people delved, With the sceptre, `and' with their staves. And from the wilderness `they journeyed' to Mattanah;

19 og fra Mattana til Nahaliel, og fra Nahaliel til Bamot,

and from Mattanah to Nahaliel; and from Nahaliel to Bamoth;

20 og fra Bamot til dalen i Moabs mark, til toppen av Pisga, som ser nedover ørkenen.

and from Bamoth to the valley that is in the field of Moab, to the top of Pisgah, which looketh down upon the desert.

21 Israel sendte bud til Sihon, amorittenes konge, og sa:

And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, saying,

22 La oss få dra gjennom ditt land. Vi skal ikke svinge av til mark eller vingård, og vi skal ikke drikke av brønnene. Vi vil følge kongens vei til vi har krysset din grense.

Let me pass through thy land: we will not turn aside into field, or into vineyard; we will not drink of the water of the wells: we will go by the king's highway, until we have passed thy border.

23 Men Sihon nektet Israel å passere gjennom sitt land. Sihon samlet hele folket sitt, dro ut i ørkenen og kom til Jahas for å kjempe mot Israel.

And Sihon would not suffer Israel to pass through his border: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and went out against Israel into the wilderness, and came to Jahaz; and he fought against Israel.

24 Israel slo ham med sverdets egg og tok hans land fra Arnon til Jabbok, så langt som fram til ammonittene, for ammonittenes grense var sterk.

And Israel smote him with the edge of the sword, and possessed his land from the Arnon unto the Jabbok, even unto the children of Ammon; for the border of the children of Ammon was strong.

25 Israel tok alle disse byene og bosatte seg i alle amorittenes byer, i Hesjbon og alle dens omkringliggende byer.

And Israel took all these cities: and Israel dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all the towns thereof.

26 Hesjbon var Sihons, amorittenes konges by, som hadde kjempet mot den tidligere kongen av Moab og tatt alt hans land fra ham like til Arnon.

For Heshbon was the city of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab, and taken all his land out of his hand, even unto the Arnon.

27 Derfor sier de som taler i ordtak: Kom til Hesjbon! La Sihons by bygges opp og befestes.

Wherefore they that speak in proverbs say, Come ye to Heshbon; Let the city of Sihon be built and established:

28 For en ild gikk ut fra Hesjbon, en flamme fra Sihons by. Den fortærte Ar i Moab, herskerne over høyslettene ved Arnon.

For a fire is gone out of Heshbon, A flame from the city of Sihon: It hath devoured Ar of Moab, The lords of the high places of the Arnon.

29 Ve deg, Moab! Du er gått til grunne, folk av Kamos: Han har gjort sønnene sine til flyktninger og døtrene sine til fanger hos Sihon, amorittenes konge.

Woe to thee, Moab! Thou art undone, O people of Chemosh: He hath given his sons as fugitives, And his daughters into captivity, Unto Sihon king of the Amorites.

30 Vi har skutt dem. Hesjbon er lagt øde helt til Dibon, og vi har ødelagt dem helt til Nofah, som når til Medeba.

We have shot at them; Heshbon is perished even unto Dibon, And we have laid waste even unto Nophah, Which `reacheth' unto Medeba.

31 Således bosatte Israel seg i amorittenes land.

Thus Israel dwelt in the land of the Amorites.

32 Moses sendte folk for å speide ut Jaser, og de tok dens omkringliggende byer og drev amorittene ut.

And Moses sent to spy out Jazer; and they took the towns thereof, and drove out the Amorites that were there.

33 Så vendte de seg og dro oppover mot Basan, og kongen av Basan, Og, dro ut mot dem med hele sitt folk for å kjempe ved Edrei.

And they turned and went up by the way of Bashan: and Og the king of Bashan went out against them, he and all his people, to battle at Edrei.

34 Herren sa til Moses: Frykt ham ikke! Jeg har gitt ham i din hånd med hele folket hans og hans land. Du skal gjøre med ham som du gjorde med amorittenes konge Sihon, som bodde i Hesjbon.

And Jehovah said unto Moses, Fear him not: for I have delivered him into thy hand, and all his people, and his land; and thou shalt do to him as thou didst unto Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt at Heshbon.

35 Så slo de ham, hans sønner og hele folket hans, inntil ingen var igjen. Og de tok hans land i eie.

So they smote him, and his sons and all his people, until there was none left him remaining: and they possessed his land.
