1 Og Israels barn brøt opp og slo leir på Moabs sletter, bortenfor Jordan, ved Jeriko.

And the children of Israel journeyed, and encamped in the plains of Moab beyond the Jordan at Jericho.

2 Balak, sønn av Sippor, så alt det Israel hadde gjort med amorittene.

And Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites.

3 Moab ble svært redd for folket fordi de var mange, og Moab ble engstelig på grunn av Israels barn.

And Moab was sore afraid of the people, because they were many: and Moab was distressed because of the children of Israel.

4 Moab sa til de eldste i Midjan: «Nå kommer denne flokken til å slikke opp alt rundt oss, slik som oksen slikker opp gresset på marken.» Balak, sønn av Sippor, var på den tiden kongen i Moab.

And Moab said unto the elders of Midian, Now will this multitude lick up all that is round about us, as the ox licketh up the grass of the field. And Balak the son of Zippor was king of Moab at that time.

5 Han sendte budbringere til Bileam, sønn av Beor, til Petor ved elven, til landet som tilhørte hans folk, for å kalle ham. Han sa: «Se, et folk har kommet ut fra Egypt; se, de dekker jordens overflate og har slått leir overfor meg.

And he sent messengers unto Balaam the son of Beor, to Pethor, which is by the River, to the land of the children of his people, to call him, saying, Behold, there is a people come out from Egypt: behold, they cover the face of the earth, and they abide over against me.

6 Kom derfor, jeg ber deg, forbann dette folket for meg, for de er for sterke for meg. Kanskje jeg kan overvinne dem og drive dem ut av landet, for jeg vet at den du velsigner er velsignet, og den du forbanner er forbannet.»

Come now therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people; for they are too mighty for me: peradventure I shall prevail, that we may smite them, and that I may drive them out of the land; for I know that he whom thou blessest is blessed, and he whom thou cursest is cursed.

7 De eldste i Moab og de eldste i Midjan dro avgårde med spådomsgaver i hendene, og de kom til Bileam og fortalte ham hva Balak hadde sagt.

And the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the rewards of divination in their hand; and they came unto Balaam, and spake unto him the words of Balak.

8 Han sa til dem: «Bli her i natt, så vil jeg gi dere et svar som Herren sier til meg.» Og Moabs høvdinger ble hos Bileam.

And he said unto them, Lodge here this night, and I will bring you word again, as Jehovah shall speak unto me: and the princes of Moab abode with Balaam.

9 Gud kom til Bileam og sa: «Hvem er disse mennene hos deg?»

And God came unto Balaam, and said, What men are these with thee?

10 Bileam svarte Gud: «Balak, sønn av Sippor, Moabs konge, har sendt bud til meg og sagt,

And Balaam said unto God, Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, hath sent unto me, `saying',

11 Se, et folk har kommet ut fra Egypt; de dekker jordens overflate. Kom nå og forbann dem for meg; kanskje jeg kan kjempe mot dem og drive dem ut.»

Behold, the people that is come out of Egypt, it covereth the face of the earth: now, come curse me them; peradventure I shall be able to fight against them, and shall drive them out.

12 Men Gud sa til Bileam: «Du skal ikke gå med dem; du skal ikke forbanne dette folket, for de er velsignet.»

And God said unto Balaam, Thou shalt not go with them; thou shalt not curse the people; for they are blessed.

13 Bileam sto opp om morgenen og sa til Balaks høvdinger: «Gå tilbake til landet deres, for Herren vil ikke la meg gå med dere.»

And Balaam rose up in the morning, and said unto the princes of Balak, Get you into your land; for Jehovah refuseth to give me leave to go with you.

14 Moabs høvdinger dro avsted, og de kom til Balak og sa: «Bileam nekter å komme med oss.»

And the princes of Moab rose up, and they went unto Balak, and said, Balaam refuseth to come with us.

15 Balak sendte enda flere høvdinger, flere og mer ærefulle enn de første.

And Balak sent yet again princes, more, and more honorable than they.

16 De kom til Bileam og sa til ham: «Så sier Balak, sønn av Sippor: 'La ingenting hindre deg fra å komme til meg,

And they came to Balaam, and said to him, Thus saith Balak the son of Zippor, Let nothing, I pray thee, hinder thee from coming unto me:

17 for jeg vil gi deg stor ære, og hva du enn sier til meg, vil jeg gjøre. Kom derfor, jeg ber deg, forbann dette folket for meg.'»

for I will promote thee unto very great honor, and whatsoever thou sayest unto me I will do: come therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people.

18 Bileam svarte og sa til Balaks tjenere: «Om Balak gir meg sitt hus fullt av sølv og gull, kan jeg ikke gå utover hva Herren min Gud sier, verken mer eller mindre.»

And Balaam answered and said unto the servants of Balak, If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of Jehovah my God, to do less or more.

19 Bli derfor også her i natt, så jeg kan få vite hva mer Herren vil si til meg.»

Now therefore, I pray you, tarry ye also here this night, that I may know what Jehovah will speak unto me more.

20 Gud kom til Bileam om natten og sa til ham: «Hvis disse mennene har kommet for å kalle deg, stå opp og gå med dem, men bare det ordet jeg taler til deg, skal du gjøre.»

And God came unto Balaam at night, and said unto him, If the men are come to call thee, rise up, go with them; but only the word which I speak unto thee, that shalt thou do.

21 Bileam sto opp om morgenen, salte eselet sitt og dro med Moabs høvdinger.

And Balaam rose up in the morning, and saddled his ass, and went with the princes of Moab.

22 Guds vrede flammet opp fordi han dro, og Herrens engel stilte seg i veien som en motstander mot ham. Han red på eselet sitt, og to av hans tjenere var med ham.

And God's anger was kindled because he went; and the angel of Jehovah placed himself in the way for an adversary against him. Now he was riding upon his ass, and his two servants were with him.

23 Eselet så Herrens engel stå i veien med løftet sverd i hånden. Eselet vek av veien og gikk ut på marken. Bileam slo eselet for å få det inn på veien igjen.

And the ass saw the angel of Jehovah standing in the way, with his sword drawn in his hand; and the ass turned aside out of the way, and went into the field: and Balaam smote the ass, to turn her into the way.

24 Herrens engel stilte seg i en trang sti mellom vinmarkene, med en mur på den ene siden og en mur på den andre siden.

Then the angel of Jehovah stood in a narrow path between the vineyards, a wall being on this side, and a wall on that side.

25 Eselet så Herrens engel og presset seg inntil muren. Den klemte Bileams fot mot muren, og han slo det igjen.

And the ass saw the angel of Jehovah, and she thrust herself unto the wall, and crushed Balaam's foot against the wall: and he smote her again.

26 Herrens engel gikk enda lenger og stilte seg på et smalt sted hvor det ikke var mulig å svinge seg verken til høyre eller venstre.

And the angel of Jehovah went further, and stood in a narrow place, where was no way to turn either to the right hand or to the left.

27 Eselet så Herrens engel og la seg ned under Bileam. Bileams vrede flammet opp, og han slo eselet med staven.

And the ass saw the angel of Jehovah, and she lay down under Balaam: and Balaam's anger was kindled, and he smote the ass with his staff.

28 Da åpnet Herren eselets munn, og eselet sa til Bileam: «Hva har jeg gjort mot deg, siden du har slått meg disse tre gangene?»

And Jehovah opened the mouth of the ass, and she said unto Balaam, What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times?

29 Bileam sa til eselet: «Fordi du har gjort narr av meg! Om jeg bare hadde hatt et sverd i hånden, ville jeg nå ha drept deg.»

And Balaam said unto the ass, Because thou hast mocked me, I would there were a sword in my hand, for now I had killed thee.

30 Eselet sa til Bileam: «Er ikke jeg ditt esel, som du har ridd på fra den dag jeg ble din til i dag? Har jeg noensinne gjort slik mot deg?» Han sa: «Nei.»

And the ass said unto Balaam, Am not I thine ass, upon which thou hast ridden all thy life long unto this day? was I ever wont to do so unto thee? and he said, Nay.

31 Da åpnet Herren Bileams øyne, og han så Herrens engel stå i veien med et løftet sverd i hånden. Han bøyde seg og falt ned på sitt ansikt.

Then Jehovah opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of Jehovah standing in the way, with his sword drawn in his hand; and he bowed his head, and fell on his face.

32 Herrens engel sa til ham: «Hvorfor har du slått eselet ditt disse tre gangene? Se, jeg har kommet for å stå imot deg, fordi din vei er tverr mot meg.

And the angel of Jehovah said unto him, Wherefore hast thou smitten thine ass these three times? behold, I am come forth for an adversary, because thy way is perverse before me:

33 Eselet så meg og vek unna meg disse tre gangene. Hadde det ikke veket unna meg, ville jeg nå ha drept deg og latt det leve.»

and the ass saw me, and turned aside before me these three times: unless she had turned aside from me, surely now I had even slain thee, and saved her alive.

34 Bileam sa til Herrens engel: «Jeg har syndet, for jeg visste ikke at du sto i veien mot meg. Nå, hvis det er ondt i dine øyne, vil jeg vende tilbake.»

And Balaam said unto the angel of Jehovah, I have sinned; for I knew not that thou stoodest in the way against me: now therefore, if it displease thee, I will get me back again.

35 Herrens engel sa til Bileam: «Gå med mennene, men bare det ordet jeg taler til deg, skal du tale.» Så dro Bileam videre med høvdingene fra Balak.

And the angel of Jehovah said unto Balaam, Go with the men; but only the word that I shall speak unto thee, that thou shalt speak. So Balaam went with the princes of Balak.

36 Da Balak hørte at Bileam kom, dro han ut for å møte ham ved Moabs by, som ligger ved Arnons grense, ytterst mot grensen.

And when Balak heard that Balaam was come, he went out to meet him unto the City of Moab, which is on the border of the Arnon, which is in the utmost part of the border.

37 Balak sa til Bileam: «Har jeg ikke sendte bud for å hente deg? Hvorfor kom du ikke til meg? Kan jeg ikke virkelig gi deg ære?»

And Balak said unto Balaam, Did I not earnestly send unto thee to call thee? wherefore camest thou not unto me? am I not able indeed to promote thee to honor?

38 Bileam svarte Balak: «Se, nå er jeg kommet til deg. Har jeg nå noen makt til å si noe som helst? Det ordet Gud legger i min munn, det skal jeg tale.»

And Balaam said unto Balak, Lo, I am come unto thee: have I now any power at all to speak anything? the word that God putteth in my mouth, that shall I speak.

39 Så dro Bileam med Balak, og de kom til Kiriat-Husot.

And Balaam went with Balak, and they came unto Kiriath-huzoth.

40 Balak ofret storfe og sauer og sendte til Bileam og høvdingene som var med ham.

And Balak sacrificed oxen and sheep, and sent to Balaam, and to the princes that were with him.

41 Det skjedde om morgenen at Balak tok Bileam og førte ham opp til Baals høyder, så han kunne se den ytterste del av folket derfra.

And it came to pass in the morning, that Balak took Balaam, and brought him up into the high places of Baal; and he saw from thence the utmost part of the people.
