Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

3 Jeg takker min Gud hver gang jeg tenker på dere,

I thank my God upon all my remembrance of you,

4 alltid, i hver bønn for dere alle, ber jeg med glede,

always in every supplication of mine on behalf of you all making my supplication with joy,

5 for deres fellesskap i arbeidet med evangeliet fra den første dagen til nå.

for your fellowship in furtherance of the gospel from the first day until now;

6 For jeg er trygg på at han som begynte den gode gjerningen i dere, vil fullføre den inntil Jesu Kristi dag.

being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Jesus Christ:

7 Det er nemlig rett av meg å ha slike tanker om dere alle, fordi jeg har dere i mitt hjerte; både i mine lenker og i forsvaret og bekreftelsen av evangeliet, er dere alle meddelaktige i nåden sammen med meg.

even as it is right for me to be thus minded on behalf of you all, because I have you in my heart, inasmuch as, both in my bonds and in the defence and confirmation of the gospel, ye all are partakers with me of grace.

8 For Gud er mitt vitne, hvor mye jeg lengter etter dere alle med Jesu Kristi inderlige kjærlighet.

For God is my witness, how I long after you all in the tender mercies of Christ Jesus.

9 Og dette ber jeg om, at deres kjærlighet må vokse og bli rik på kunnskap og all innsikt,

And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and all discernment;

10 så dere kan bedømme hva som er best, og være rene og uten anstøt inntil Kristi dag;

so that ye may approve the things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and void of offence unto the day of Christ;

11 fylt med rettferdighets frukter som kommer gjennom Jesus Kristus, til Guds ære og pris.

being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are through Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.

12 Nå vil jeg at dere skal vite, brødre, at det som har hendt meg, snarere har fremmet evangeliet,

Now I would have you know, brethren, that the things `which happened' unto me have fallen out rather unto the progress of the gospel;

13 slik at mine lenker har blitt kjent i Kristus blant hele prætoriet og hos alle de andre,

so that my bonds became manifest in Christ throughout the whole praetorian guard, and to all the rest;

14 og de fleste av brødrene i Herren, som har fått tillit ved mine lenker, taler Guds ord med enda større frimodighet uten frykt.

and that most of the brethren in the Lord, being confident through my bonds, are more abundantly bold to speak the word of God without fear.

15 Noen forkynner riktignok Kristus av misunnelse og stridighet; men noen også av god vilje.

Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of good will:

16 De som gjør det av kjærlighet, vet at jeg er satt til forsvar for evangeliet;

the one `do it' of love, knowing that I am set for the defence of the gospel;

17 men de andre forkynner Kristus av rivalisering, uten oppriktighet, i håp om å bringe til meg trengsel i mine lenker.

but the other proclaim Christ of faction, not sincerely, thinking to raise up affliction for me in my bonds.

18 Hva så? Bare på enhver måte, enten i påskudd eller i sannhet, forkynnes Kristus; og i det gleder jeg meg, ja, og vil fortsette å glede meg.

What then? only that in every way, whether in pretence or in truth, Christ is proclaimed; and therein I rejoice, yea, and will rejoice.

19 For jeg vet at dette skal lede til min frelse ved deres bønn og Jesus Kristi Ånds hjelp,

For I know that this shall turn out to my salvation, through your supplication and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,

20 etter min ivrige forventning og håp om at jeg ikke skal bli til skamme i noe, men at Kristus nå som alltid skal bli opphøyet i mitt legeme, enten ved liv eller ved død.

according to my earnest expectation and hope, that in nothing shall I be put to shame, but `that' with all boldness, as always, `so' now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether by life, or by death.

21 For meg er livet Kristus, og døden en vinning.

For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

22 Men hvis det å leve i kjødet og å bære frukt av mitt arbeid, hva skal jeg da velge? Jeg vet ikke det.

But if to live in the flesh, --`if' this shall bring fruit from my work, then what I shall choose I know not.

23 For jeg står mellom de to, jeg har lengsel etter å bli forlatt og være med Kristus, for det er langt bedre;

But I am in a strait betwixt the two, having the desire to depart and be with Christ; for it is very far better:

24 men å bli i kjødet er mer nødvendig for deres skyld.

yet to abide in the flesh is more needful for your sake.

25 Og med denne tilliten vet jeg at jeg skal bli og bli sammen med dere alle, for deres fremgang og glede i troen;

And having this confidence, I know that I shall abide, yea, and abide with you all, for your progress and joy in the faith;

26 slik at deres stolthet i Kristus Jesus kan blomstre overflodig på grunn av meg når jeg er hos dere igjen.

that your glorying may abound in Christ Jesus in me through my presence with you again.

27 Bare la deres livsførsel være verdig Kristi evangelium, slik at, enten jeg kommer og ser dere eller er fraværende, jeg kan høre om dere at dere står fast i én Ånd, med én sjel idet dere kjemper for troen på evangeliet;

Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ: that, whether I come and see you and be absent, I may hear of your state, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one soul striving for the faith of the gospel;

28 og i intet skal dere la dere skremme av motstanderne; det er for dem et bevis på fortapelse, men på deres frelse, og det er fra Gud.

and in nothing affrighted by the adversaries: which is for them an evident token of perdition, but of your salvation, and that from God;

29 For til dere er det gitt for Kristi skyld ikke bare å tro på ham, men også å lide for hans skyld;

because to you it hath been granted in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer in his behalf:

30 idet dere har samme kamp som dere så i meg og nå hører er i meg.

having the same conflict which ye saw in me, and now hear to be in me.
