1 Det skjedde i det fjerde året av kong Darius at Herrens ord kom til Sakarja den fjerde dagen i den niende måneden, i Kislev.

And it came to pass in the fourth year of king Darius, that the word of Jehovah came unto Zechariah in the fourth `day' of the ninth month, even in Chislev.

2 Nå hadde folket fra Betel sendt Sjarezer og Regem-Melek og deres menn for å søke gunst hos Herren,

Now `they of' Beth-el had sent Sharezer and Regem-melech, and their men, to entreat the favor of Jehovah,

3 og for å tale til prestene i Herrens hærskarehus og til profetene og spørre: Skal jeg gråte i den femte måneden og avstå som jeg har gjort i så mange år?

`and' to speak unto the priests of the house of Jehovah of hosts, and to the prophets, saying, Should I weep in the fifth month, separating myself, as I have done these so many years?

4 Da kom Herrens hærskarenes ord til meg,

Then came the word of Jehovah of hosts unto me, saying,

5 Tal til hele folket i landet og til prestene og si: Når dere fastet og sørget i den femte og sjette måneden i disse sytti årene, fastet dere virkelig for meg, for meg?

Speak unto all the people of the land, and to the priests, saying, When ye fasted and mourned in the fifth and in the seventh `month', even these seventy years, did ye at all fast unto me, even to me?

6 Og når dere spiser og drikker, spiser dere ikke for dere selv og drikker for dere selv?

And when ye eat, and when ye drink, do not ye eat for yourselves, and drink for yourselves?

7 Burde dere ikke høre ordene som Herren ropte gjennom de tidligere profetene, da Jerusalem var bebodd og i velstand, og byene rundt den, og sørsletten og lavlandet var bebodd?

`Should ye' not `hear' the words which Jehovah cried by the former prophets, when Jerusalem was inhabited and in prosperity, and the cities thereof round about her, and the South and the lowland were inhabited?

8 Og Herrens ord kom til Sakarja, og sa,

And the word of Jehovah came unto Zechariah, saying,

9 Så har Herren hærskaren talt: Utfør sann rett, og vis barmhjertighet og medfølelse, hver mann mot sin bror;

Thus hath Jehovah of hosts spoken, saying, Execute true judgment, and show kindness and compassion every man to his brother;

10 og undertrykk ikke enken, den farløse, innflytteren eller den fattige, og la ingen av dere finne på onde planer mot hans bror i hjertet.

and oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the sojourner, nor the poor; and let none of you devise evil against his brother in your heart.

11 Men de nektet å høre, de dro skuldrene unna, og de tilstoppet ørene, så de ikke kunne høre.

But they refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they might not hear.

12 Ja, de gjorde sine hjerter harde som stein, for ikke å høre loven og ordene som Herren hærskaren sendte ved sin Ånd gjennom de tidligere profetene, og derfor kom stor vrede fra Herren hærskaren.

Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which Jehovah of hosts had sent by his Spirit by the former prophets: therefore there came great wrath from Jehovah of hosts.

13 Og det skjedde at da han ropte og de ikke ville høre, så skulle de rope, og jeg ville ikke høre, sier Herren hærskaren;

And it is come to pass that, as he cried, and they would not hear, so they shall cry, and I will not hear, said Jehovah of hosts;

14 men jeg vil spre dem med en virvelvind blant alle de folkene som de ikke har kjent. Slik ble landet øde etter dem, så ingen passerte gjennom eller vendte tilbake: for de la det vakre landet øde.

but I will scatter them with a whirlwind among all the nations which they have not known. Thus the land was desolate after them, so that no man passed through nor returned: for they laid the pleasant land desolate.
