1 Nå var David gammel og mett av dager; og han gjorde sin sønn Salomo til konge over Israel.

Now David was old and full of days; and he made his son Solomon king over Israel.

2 Og han samlet alle lederne i Israel, sammen med prestene og levittene.

And he got together all the chiefs of Israel, with the priests and the Levites.

3 Og levittene, alle som var tretti år og eldre, ble talt; og antallet av dem, etter hoder, mann for mann, var trettifire tusen.

And the Levites, all those of thirty years old and over, were numbered; and the number of them, by heads, man by man, was thirty-eight thousand.

4 Av disse skulle tjuefire tusen være tilsynsmenn over Herrens husets arbeid, og seks tusen var dommere og ledere;

Of these, twenty-four thousand were to be overseers of the work of the house of the Lord, and six thousand were judges and men of authority;

5 Fire tusen var portvoktere; og fire tusen ga lovsang til Herren med de instrumentene jeg laget, sa David, for å gi lovsang.

Four thousand were door-keepers; and four thousand gave praise to the Lord with the instruments which I made, said David, for giving praise.

6 Og David delte dem inn i avdelinger under navnene til Levis sønner: Gershon, Kahath og Merari.

And David put them into divisions under the names of the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

7 Av gersonittene: Ladan og Sjimi.

Of the Gershonites: Ladan and Shimei.

8 Sønnene til Ladan: Jehiel den fremste, og Setam og Joel, tre.

The sons of Ladan: Jehiel the chief, and Zetham and Joel, three.

9 Sønnene til Sjimi: Selomot og Hasiel og Haran, tre; disse var lederne for Ladans familier.

The sons of Shimei: Shelomoth and Haziel and Haran, three; these were the heads of the families of Ladan.

10 Og sønnene til Sjimi: Jahat, Sisa og Je’usj og Beria; disse fire var sjimis sønner.

And the sons of Shimei: Jahath, Zizah and Jeush and Beriah; these four were the sons of Shimei.

11 Jahat var den ledende og Sisa den andre; men Je’usj og Beria hadde bare et lite antall sønner, så de ble samlet som en familie.

Jahath was the chief and Zizah the second; but Jeush and Beriah had only a small number of sons, so they were grouped together as one family.

12 Sønnene til Kahath: Amram, Ishar, Hebron og Ussiel, fire.

The sons of Kohath: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel, four.

13 Sønnene til Amram: Aron og Moses; og Aron ble utvalgt og helliggjort, han og hans sønner for alltid, for å ta seg av de mest hellige tingene og ofre brennoffer foran Herren, for å gjøre hans arbeid og gi velsignelser i hans navn for alltid.

The sons of Amram: Aaron and Moses; and Aaron was made separate and holy, he and his sons for ever, for the care of the most holy things and the burning of offerings before the Lord, to do his work and give blessings in his name for ever.

14 Og sønnene til Moses, Guds mann, ble innlemmet i Levis stamme.

And the sons of Moses, the man of God, were put into the list of the tribe of Levi.

15 Sønnene til Moses: Gershom og Elieser.

The sons of Moses: Gershom and Eliezer.

16 Sønnene til Gershom: Sjebuel den første.

The sons of Gershom: Shebuel the first.

17 Og sønnene til Elieser: Rehabia den første; og Elieser hadde ingen andre sønner, men Rehabia hadde et stort antall.

And the sons of Eliezer: Rehabiah the first; and Eliezer had no other sons, but Rehabiah had a great number.

18 Sønnene til Ishar: Selomit den første.

The sons of Izhar: Shelomith the first.

19 Sønnene til Hebron: Jeria den første, Amarja den andre, Jahasiel den tredje og Jekameam den fjerde.

The sons of Hebron: Jeriah the first, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third, and Jekameam the fourth.

20 Sønnene til Ussiel: Mika den første, og Isjia den andre.

The sons of Uzziel: Micah the first, and Isshiah the second.

21 Sønnene til Merari: Mahli og Musji; sønnene til Mahli: Eleasar og Kisj.

The sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi; the sons of Mahli: Eleazar and Kish.

22 Og ved hans død hadde Eleasar ingen sønner, bare døtre, og slektningene, sønnene til Kisj, tok dem til hustruer.

And at his death Eleazar had no sons, but only daughters, and their relations, the sons of Kish, took them as wives.

23 Sønnene til Musji: Mahli og Eder og Jeremot, tre.

The sons of Mushi: Mahli and Eder and Jeremoth, three.

24 Disse var Levis sønner, ordnet etter familier, lederne for familiene til de som ble talt ved navn, etter hoder, alle de som var tjue år og eldre, som gjorde arbeid ved Herrens hus.

These were the sons of Levi, grouped by families, the heads of the families of those who were numbered by name, by heads, all those of twenty years old and over who did the work of the house of the Lord.

25 For David sa, Herren, Israels Gud, har gitt sitt folk hvile, og han har gjort sitt hvilested i Jerusalem for alltid;

For David said, The Lord, the God of Israel, has given his people rest, and he has made his resting-place in Jerusalem for ever;

26 Og fra nå av vil det ikke være behov for at Herrens hus, og redskapene som brukes i det, skal flyttes av levittene.

And from now, there will be no need for the House of the Lord, and the vessels used in it, to be moved about by the Levites.

27 Så blant Davids siste gjerninger var å telle Levis sønner, fra tjue år og eldre.

So among the last acts of David was the numbering of the sons of Levi, from twenty years old and over.

28 Deres plass var ved Arons sønners side i alt arbeidet ved Herrens hus, i de åpne plassene og i rommene, i rengjøringen av alle de hellige ting, i alt arbeidet ved Herrens hus,

Their place was by the side of the sons of Aaron in all the work of the house of the Lord, in the open spaces and in the rooms, in the making clean of all the holy things, in doing all the work of the house of the Lord,

29 Det hellige brødet var deres ansvar, og det knuste kornet til offermåltidet, usyrede kaker eller måltid stekt på ilden eller i vann; de hadde kontroll over alle slags vekt og mål;

The holy bread was in their care, and the crushed grain for the meal offering, of unleavened cakes or meal cooked over the fire or in water; they had control of all sorts of weights and measures;

30 De måtte innta sine plasser hver morgen for å gi lovsang og melodi til Herren, og på samme måte om kvelden;

They had to take their places every morning to give praise and make melody to the Lord, and in the same way at evening;

31 Ved hvert offer av brennoffer til Herren, på sabbater, og ved nymåner og faste høytider, i det antall pålagt av loven, til alle tider foran Herren;

At every offering of burned offerings to the Lord, on Sabbaths, and at the new moons, and on the regular feasts, in the number ordered by the law, at all times before the Lord;

32 Og de hadde ansvaret for møteteltet og det hellige stedet, under ledelse av Arons sønner, for arbeidet ved Herrens hus.

And they had the care of the Tent of meeting and the holy place, under the direction of the sons of Aaron their brothers, for the work of the house of the Lord.
