1 Det skjedde i det syvende året, i den femte måneden, på den tiende dagen i måneden, at noen av de ansvarlige mennene i Israel kom for å søke råd fra Herren og satte seg foran meg.

Now it came about in the seventh year, in the fifth month, on the tenth day of the month, that certain of the responsible men of Israel came to get directions from the Lord and were seated before me.

2 Da kom Herrens ord til meg, og sa:

Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

3 Menneskesønn, si til de ansvarlige mennene i Israel: Dette sier Herren: Har dere kommet for å søke råd fra meg? Ved mitt liv, sier Herren, dere skal ikke få råd fra meg.

Son of man, say to the responsible men of Israel, This is what the Lord has said: Have you come to get directions from me? By my life, says the Lord, you will get no directions from me.

4 Vil du være deres dommer, menneskesønn, vil du være deres dommer? Gjør det klart for dem de avskyelige handlingene til deres fedre,

Will you be their judge, O son of man, will you be their judge? make clear to them the disgusting ways of their fathers,

5 og si til dem: Dette sier Herren: På den dagen da jeg valgte Israel, da jeg avla ed til Jakobs ætt, og ga dem kunnskap om meg i landet Egypt, sa jeg til dem med ed: Jeg er Herren deres Gud.

And say to them, This is what the Lord has said: In the day when I took Israel for myself, when I made an oath to the seed of the family of Jacob, and I gave them knowledge of myself in the land of Egypt, saying to them with an oath, I am the Lord your God;

6 Den dagen avla jeg ed om å føre dem ut av landet Egypt til et land jeg hadde valgt for dem, et land som flyter av melk og honning, den vakreste av alle land.

In that day I gave my oath to take them out of the land of Egypt into a land which I had been searching out for them, a land flowing with milk and honey, the glory of all lands:

7 Jeg sa da til dem: La enhver av dere legge bort de avskyelige tingene deres øyne er vendt mot, og gjør dere ikke urene med Egypts avguder; jeg er Herren deres Gud.

And I said to them, Let every man among you put away the disgusting things to which his eyes are turned, and do not make yourselves unclean with the images of Egypt; I am the Lord your God.

8 Men de ville ikke høre på meg og ga ikke akt på mine ord; de la ikke bort de avskyelige tingene deres øyne var vendt mot, eller gav opp Egypts avguder. Da sa jeg at jeg ville la min vrede komme over dem for å gi full virkning til min harme mot dem i Egypts land.

But they would not be controlled by me, and did not give ear to me; they did not put away the disgusting things to which their eyes were turned, or give up the images of Egypt: then I said I would let loose my passion on them to give full effect to my wrath against them in the land of Egypt.

9 Men jeg handlet for ære for mitt navn, så det ikke skulle bli vanæret for øynene til de nasjoner blant hvilke de bodde, og foran hvis øyne jeg hadde gjort meg kjent for dem ved å føre dem ut av Egypts land.

And I was acting for the honour of my name, so that it might not be made unclean before the eyes of the nations among whom they were, and before whose eyes I gave them knowledge of myself, by taking them out of the land of Egypt.

10 Så førte jeg dem ut av Egypts land og inn i ødemarken.

So I made them go out of the land of Egypt and took them into the waste land.

11 Og jeg ga dem mine lover og gjorde mine påbud klare for dem, som, hvis en mann holder dem, vil gi ham liv.

And I gave them my rules and made clear to them my orders, which, if a man keeps them, will be life to him.

12 Og videre, jeg ga dem mine sabbater, som et tegn mellom meg og dem, så de skulle vite at jeg, som helliger dem, er Herren.

And further, I gave them my Sabbaths, to be a sign between me and them, so that it might be clear that I, who make them holy, am the Lord.

13 Men Israels barn ville ikke la seg veilede av meg i ødemarken: de fulgte ikke mine lover, og vendte seg fra mine påbud, som, hvis en mann gjør dem, vil gi ham liv; og de respekterte ikke mine sabbater: da sa jeg at jeg ville la min vrede komme over dem i ødemarken for å gjøre ende på dem.

But the children of Israel would not be controlled by me in the waste land: they were not guided by my rules, and they were turned away from my orders, which, if a man does them, will be life to him; and they had no respect for my Sabbaths: then I said that I would let loose my passion on them in the waste land, and put an end to them.

14 Men jeg handlet for ære for mitt navn, så det ikke skulle bli vanæret for øynene til de nasjoner, foran hvilke jeg hadde ført dem ut.

And I was acting for the honour of my name, so that it might not be made unclean in the eyes of the nations, before whose eyes I had taken them out.

15 Og videre, jeg avla en ed til dem i ødemarken om at jeg ikke ville føre dem inn i landet jeg hadde gitt dem, et land som flyter av melk og honning, den vakreste av alle land,

And further, I gave my oath to them in the waste land, that I would not take them into the land which I had given them, a land flowing with milk and honey, the glory of all lands;

16 fordi de hadde vendt seg fra mine påbud, og ikke hadde fulgt mine lover, og hadde ingen respekt for mine sabbater, for deres hjerter gikk etter deres avguder.

Because they were turned away from my orders, and were not guided by my rules, and had no respect for my Sabbaths: for their hearts went after their images.

17 Men likevel var mitt øye fylt av medlidenhet med dem, og jeg skånet dem fra ødeleggelse og gjorde ikke helt slutt på dem i ødemarken.

But still my eye had pity on them and I kept them from destruction and did not put an end to them completely in the waste land.

18 Og jeg sa til deres barn i ødemarken: La dere ikke veilede av deres fedres påbud, hold ikke deres lover, og gjør dere ikke urene med deres avguder.

And I said to their children in the waste land, Do not be guided by the rules of your fathers or keep their orders or make yourselves unclean with their images:

19 Jeg er Herren deres Gud; la dere veilede av mine lover og hold mine påbud og gjør dem.

I am the Lord your God; be guided by my rules and keep my orders and do them:

20 Og hold mine sabbater hellige; de skal være et tegn mellom meg og dere, så det kan bli klart for dere at jeg er Herren deres Gud.

And keep my Sabbaths holy; and they will be a sign between me and you so that it may be clear to you that I am the Lord your God.

21 Men barna ville ikke la seg veilede av meg; de fulgte ikke mine lover, og holdt ikke og gjorde ikke mine påbud, som, hvis en mann gjør dem, vil gi ham liv; og de respekterte ikke mine sabbater: da sa jeg at jeg ville la min vrede komme over dem i ødemarken for å gi full virkning til min harme mot dem.

23 Videre avla jeg en ed til dem i ødemarken om at jeg ville sende dem bort blant nasjonene, spre dem ut blant landene;

Further, I gave my oath to them in the waste land that I would send them wandering among the nations, driving them out among the countries;

24 fordi de ikke hadde gjort mine påbud, men hadde vendt seg fra mine lover, og hadde ikke hatt respekt for mine sabbater, og deres øyne var vendt mot deres fedres avguder.

Because they had not done my orders, but had been turned away from my rules, and had not given respect to my Sabbaths, and their eyes were turned to the images of their fathers.

25 Og videre, jeg ga dem regler som ikke var gode og påbud som ikke ville gi dem liv.

And further, I gave them rules which were not good and orders in which there was no life for them;

26 Jeg gjorde dem urene i de offergavene de ga, ved å la dem ofre hver førstefødt sønn gjennom ild, så jeg kunne gjøre ende på dem.

I made them unclean in the offerings they gave, causing them to make every first child go through the fire, so that I might put an end to them.

27 For denne årsak, menneskesønn, si til Israels barn: Dette sier Herren: På denne måte fornedret deres fedre mitt navn enda mer ved å gjøre ondt mot meg.

For this cause, son of man, say to the children of Israel, This is what the Lord has said: In this your fathers have further put shame on my name by doing wrong against me.

28 For da jeg hadde ført dem inn i landet jeg hadde avlagt ed for å gi dem, så de hver høyde og hver greinende tre og ofret der deres offergaver, som vekket min harme; og der steg duften av deres offer opp og deres drikkoffer ble tømt ut.

For when I had taken them into the land which I made an oath to give to them, then they saw every high hill and every branching tree and made their offerings there, moving me to wrath by their offerings; and there the sweet smell of their offerings went up and their drink offerings were drained out.

29 Da spurte jeg dem: Hva er dette høye stedet dere går til med ingen nytte? Og det ble kalt Bamah til denne dag.

Then I said to them, What is this high place where you go to no purpose? And it is named Bamah to this day.

30 For denne årsak, si til Israels barn: Dette sier Herren: Gjør dere dere urene som deres fedre gjorde? Er dere utro mot meg ved å følge deres avskyelige handlinger?

For this cause say to the children of Israel, This is what the Lord has said: Are you making yourselves unclean as your fathers did? are you being untrue to me by going after their disgusting works?

31 Og når dere gir deres offergaver og lar deres sønner gå gjennom ild, gjør dere dere urene med alle deres avguder til denne dag; og kommer dere til meg for å få råd, Israels barn? Ved mitt liv, sier Herren, dere skal ikke få råd fra meg.

And when you give your offerings, causing your sons to go through the fire, you make yourselves unclean with all your images to this day; and will you come to me for directions, O children of Israel? By my life, says the Lord, you will get no direction from me.

32 Og det som kommer inn i deres sinn vil aldri skje; når dere sier: Vi vil være som nasjonene, som familiene av landene, tjenere av tre og stein,

And that which comes into your minds will never take place; when you say, We will be like the nations, like the families of the countries, servants of wood and stone;

33 ved mitt liv, sier Herren, virkelig, med en sterk hånd og med en utstrakt arm og med brennende vrede, vil jeg være konge over dere.

By my life, says the Lord, truly, with a strong hand and with an outstretched arm and with burning wrath let loose, I will be King over you:

34 Og jeg vil ta dere ut fra folkeslagene og samle dere fra landene hvor dere har vært spredt, med en sterk hånd og med en utstrakt arm og med brennende vrede.

And I will take you out from the peoples and get you together out of the countries where you are wandering, with a strong hand and with an outstretched arm and with burning wrath let loose:

35 Og jeg vil ta dere inn i folkets ødemark, og der vil jeg møte dere ansikt til ansikt.

And I will take you into the waste land of the peoples, and there I will take up the cause with you face to face.

36 Slik jeg møtte deres fedre i Egypts land sin ødemark, slik vil jeg også møte dere, sier Herren.

As I took up the cause with your fathers in the waste land of the land of Egypt, so will I take up the cause with you says the Lord.

37 Og jeg vil få dere til å gå under staven og la dere bli få i antall.

And I will make you go under the rod and will make you small in number:

38 Rense ut blant dere alle dem som er ukontrollerbare og som synder mot meg; jeg vil ta dem ut av landet hvor de bor, men de skal ikke komme inn i Israels land; og dere skal være sikre på at jeg er Herren.

Clearing out from among you all those who are uncontrolled and who are sinning against me; I will take them out of the land where they are living, but they will not come into the land of Israel: and you will be certain that I am the Lord.

39 Når det gjelder dere, Israels barn, sier Herren: La hver mann helt legge bort sine avguder og høre på meg, og la ikke mitt hellige navn lenger skjemmes av deres offergaver og deres avguder.

As for you, O children of Israel, the Lord has said: Let every man completely put away his images and give ear to me: and let my holy name no longer be shamed by your offerings and your images.

40 For på mitt hellige fjell, på Israels høye fjell, sier Herren, der skal hele Israels folk, alle sammen, være mine tjenere i landet; der vil jeg ha behag i dem, og der vil jeg bli tilbedt med deres offergaver og førstegrøden av det dere gir, og med alle deres hellige ting.

For in my holy mountain, in the high mountain of Israel, says the Lord, there all the children of Israel, all of them, will be my servants in the land; there I will take pleasure in them, and there I will be worshipped with your offerings and the first-fruits of the things you give, and with all your holy things.

41 Jeg vil ha behag i dere som i en duftende duft, når jeg bringer dere ut fra folkeslagene og samler dere fra landene hvor dere har vært spredt; og jeg vil hellige meg i dere for øynene til nasjonene.

I will take pleasure in you as in a sweet smell, when I take you out from the peoples and get you together from the countries where you have been sent in flight; and I will make myself holy in you before the eyes of the nations.

42 Og dere skal være sikre på at jeg er Herren, når jeg fører dere inn i Israels land, inn i landet jeg avla ed for å gi deres fedre.

And you will be certain that I am the Lord, when I take you into the land of Israel, into the country which I made an oath to give to your fathers.

43 Og der, ved minnet om deres veier og alle de tingene dere gjorde for å gjøre dere urene, skal dere ha bitter hat mot dere selv for alle de onde tingene dere har gjort.

And there, at the memory of your ways and of all the things you did to make yourselves unclean, you will have bitter hate for yourselves because of all the evil things you have done.

44 Og dere skal være sikre på at jeg er Herren, når jeg tar hånd om dere for ære for mitt navn og ikke etter deres onde veier eller deres urene gjerninger, Israels barn, sier Herren.

And you will be certain that I am the Lord, when I take you in hand for the honour of my name, and not for your evil ways or your unclean doings, O children of Israel, says the Lord.

45 Da kom Herrens ord til meg, og sa:

Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

46 Menneskesønn, vend ansiktet ditt mot sør, la ordene dine falle til sør, og vær en profet mot sørens skog.

Son of man, let your face be turned to the south, let your words be dropped to the south, and be a prophet against the woodland of the South;

47 Og si til sørens skog: Hør Herrens ord: dette sier Herren: Se, jeg vil tenne en ild i deg til ødeleggelse av hvert grønt tre i deg og hvert tørt tre: den flamrende flammen vil ikke slukkes, og alle ansikter fra sør til nord vil bli brent av den.

And say to the woodland of the South, Give ear to the words of the Lord: this is what the Lord has said: See, I will have a fire lighted in you, for the destruction of every green tree in you and every dry tree: the flaming flame will not be put out, and all faces from the south to the north will be burned by it.

48 Og alt kjød vil se at jeg, Herren, har tent den: den vil ikke bli slukket.

And all flesh will see that I the Lord have had it lighted: it will not be put out.

49 Da sa jeg: Å, Herre! De sier om meg: Er han ikke en skaper av historier?

Then I said, Ah, Lord! they say of me, Is he not a maker of stories?
