Verse 1

Then all Israel gathered to David at Hebron and said, "We are your own flesh and blood.

Then all Israel gathered themselves to David unto Hebron, saying, Behold, we are thy bone and thy flesh.

Verse 2

In the past, even when Saul was king, you were the one who led Israel in and out. And the LORD your God said to you, 'You will shepherd my people Israel, and you will be ruler over my people Israel.'

And moreover in time past, even when Saul was king, thou wast he that leddest out and broughtest in Israel: and the LORD thy God said unto thee, Thou shalt feed my people Israel, and thou shalt be ruler over my people Israel.

Verse 3

So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the LORD. They anointed David king over Israel, as the LORD had said through Samuel.

Therefore came all the elders of Israel to the king to Hebron; and David made a covenant with them in Hebron before the LORD; and they anointed David king over Israel, according to the word of the LORD by Samuel.

Verse 4

David and all Israel went to Jerusalem, which is Jebus, where the Jebusites were the inhabitants of the land.

And David and all Israel went to Jerusalem, which is Jebus; where the Jebusites were, the inhabitants of the land.

Verse 5

The inhabitants of Jebus said to David, "You shall not come in here." But David captured the fortress of Zion, which is now the city of David.

And the inhabitants of Jebus said to David, Thou shalt not come hither. Nevertheless David took the castle of Zion, which is the city of David.

Verse 6

David said, "Whoever strikes the Jebusites first shall be chief and commander." And Joab son of Zeruiah went up first, and so he became chief.

And David said, Whosoever smiteth the Jebusites first shall be chief and captain. So Joab the son of Zeruiah went first up, and was chief.

Verse 7

David then took up residence in the stronghold, and it was called the city of David.

And David dwelt in the castle; therefore they called it the city of David.

Verse 8

He built up the city all around, from the terraces to the surrounding area, and Joab restored the rest of the city.

And he built the city round about, even from Millo round about: and Joab repaired the rest of the city.

Verse 9

David grew stronger and stronger, for the LORD Almighty was with him.

So David waxed greater and greater: for the LORD of hosts was with him.

Verse 10

These were the chiefs of David's mighty warriors, who gave him strong support in his kingdom, together with all Israel, to make him king, according to the word of the LORD concerning Israel.

These also are the chief of the mighty men whom David had, who strengthened themselves with him in his kingdom, and with all Israel, to make him king, according to the word of the LORD concerning Israel.

Verse 11

This is the list of David's mighty warriors: Jashobeam the Hachmonite was chief of the officers; he raised his spear against three hundred men, whom he killed in one encounter.

And this is the number of the mighty men whom David had; Jashobeam, an Hachmonite, the chief of the captains: he lifted up his spear against three hundred slain by him at one time.

Verse 12

Next to him was Eleazar son of Dodo the Ahohite, one of the three mighty warriors.

And after him was Eleazar the son of Dodo, the Ahohite, who was one of the three mighties.

Verse 13

He was with David at Pas Dammim, where the Philistines had gathered for battle. At a field full of barley, the troops fled from the Philistines.

He was with David at Pasdammim, and there the Philistines were gathered together to battle, where was a parcel of ground full of barley; and the people fled from before the Philistines.

Verse 14

But they took their stand in the middle of the field and defended it. They struck down the Philistines, and the LORD brought about a great victory.

And they set themselves in the midst of that parcel, and delivered it, and slew the Philistines; and the LORD saved them by a great deliverance.

Verse 15

Three of the thirty chiefs went down to David at the rock by the cave of Adullam while a band of Philistines was camped in the Valley of Rephaim.

Now three of the thirty captains went down to the rock to David, into the cave of Adullam; and the host of the Philistines encamped in the valley of Rephaim.

Verse 16

At that time, David was in the stronghold, and the Philistine garrison was at Bethlehem.

And David was then in the hold, and the Philistines' garrison was then at Bethlehem.

Verse 17

David longed for water and said, "If only someone would get me water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem!"

And David longed, and said, Oh that one would give me drink of the water of the well of Bethlehem, that is at the gate!

Verse 18

So the three warriors broke through the Philistine camp, drew water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem, and brought it back to David. But he refused to drink it; instead, he poured it out to the LORD.

And the three brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: but David would not drink of it, but poured it out to the LORD,

Verse 19

He said, "Far be it from me, O my God, to do this! Should I drink the blood of these men who risked their lives? Because they risked their lives to bring it, I would not drink it." Such were the exploits of the three mighty warriors.

And said, My God forbid it me, that I should do this thing: shall I drink the blood of these men that have put their lives in jeopardy? for with the jeopardy of their lives they brought it. Therefore he would not drink it. These things did these three mightiest.

Verse 20

Abishai, the brother of Joab, was chief of the three. He raised his spear against three hundred men and killed them, and so he became as famous as the three.

And Abishai the brother of Joab, he was chief of the three: for lifting up his spear against three hundred, he slew them, and had a name among the three.

Verse 21

He was doubly honored above the three and became their commander, even though he was not included among them.

Of the three, he was more honourable than the two; for he was their captain: howbeit he attained not to the first three.

Verse 22

Benaiah son of Jehoiada, a valiant fighter from Kabzeel, performed great exploits. He struck down Moab's two lion-like warriors. He also went down into a pit on a snowy day and killed a lion.

Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man of Kabzeel, who had done many acts; he slew two lionlike men of Moab: also he went down and slew a lion in a pit in a snowy day.

Verse 23

And he struck down an Egyptian who was five cubits tall. Although the Egyptian had a spear like a weaver's rod in his hand, Benaiah went against him with a club. He snatched the spear from the Egyptian's hand and killed him with his own spear.

And he slew an Egyptian, a man of great stature, five cubits high; and in the Egyptian's hand was a spear like a weaver's beam; and he went down to him with a staff, and plucked the spear out of the Egyptian's hand, and slew him with his own spear.

Verse 24

Such were the exploits of Benaiah son of Jehoiada; he too was as famous as the three mighty warriors.

These things did Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and had the name among the three mighties.

Verse 25

He was held in greater honor than any of the Thirty, but he was not included among the three. And David put him in charge of his bodyguard.

Behold, he was honourable among the thirty, but attained not to the first three: and David set him over his guard.
