Verse 1

In the spring, at the time when kings go out to war, Joab led the army and ravaged the land of the Ammonites. He went to besiege Rabbah, but David stayed in Jerusalem. Joab attacked Rabbah and destroyed it.

And it came to pass, that after the year was expired, at the time that kings go out to battle, Joab led forth the power of the army, and wasted the country of the children of Ammon, and came and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried at Jerusalem. And Joab smote Rabbah, and destroyed it.

Verse 2

David took the crown from the head of their king; it was found to weigh a talent of gold and was adorned with a precious stone. It was placed on David's head, and he took a great amount of plunder from the city.

And David took the crown of their king from off his head, and found it to weigh a talent of gold, and there were precious stones in it; and it was set upon David's head: and he brought also exceeding much spoil out of the city.

Verse 3

He brought out the people who were there and put them to work with saws, iron tools, and axes. David did this to all the cities of the Ammonites. Then David and all the people returned to Jerusalem.

And he brought out the people that were in it, and cut them with saws, and with harrows of iron, and with axes. Even so dealt David with all the cities of the children of Ammon. And David and all the people returned to Jerusalem.

Verse 4

After this, war broke out at Gezer with the Philistines. Sibbecai the Hushathite struck down Sippai, a descendant of the Rephaim, and they were subdued.

And it came to pass after this, that there arose war at Gezer with the Philistines; at which time Sibbechai the Hushathite slew Sippai, that was of the children of the giant: and they were subdued.

Verse 5

Once again, there was war with the Philistines, and Elhanan son of Jair struck down Lahmi, the brother of Goliath the Gittite, whose spear shaft was like a weaver’s beam.

And there was war again with the Philistines; and Elhanan the son of Jair slew Lahmi the brother of Goliath the Gittite, whose spear staff was like a weaver's beam.

Verse 6

In another battle, which took place at Gath, there was a huge man with six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot—twenty-four in total. He too was a descendant of the giants.

And yet again there was war at Gath, where was a man of great stature, whose fingers and toes were four and twenty, six on each hand, and six on each foot: and he also was the son of the giant.

Verse 7

This man taunted Israel, but Jonathan son of Shimea, David’s brother, struck him down.

But when he defied Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimea David's brother slew him.

Verse 8

These were descendants of the giants in Gath, and they fell at the hands of David and his men.

These were born unto the giant in Gath; and they fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants.
