Verse 1

See how great a love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and this is what we are! The world does not know us because it did not know Him.

Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.

Verse 2

Beloved, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been revealed. But we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.

Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

Verse 3

And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.

And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

Verse 4

Everyone who commits sin also practices lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness.

Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

Verse 5

You know that He appeared to take away sins, and in Him there is no sin.

And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.

Verse 6

No one who abides in Him keeps on sinning; no one who continues to sin has seen Him or known Him.

Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.

Verse 7

Little children, let no one lead you astray. The one who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous.

Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.

Verse 8

The one who practices sin is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The Son of God appeared for this reason: to destroy the works of the devil.

He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

Verse 9

No one born of God practices sin, for His seed abides in them; they cannot keep on sinning, because they have been born of God.

Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

Verse 10

By this the children of God and the children of the devil are distinguished: Anyone who does not practice righteousness and does not love their brother or sister is not of God.

In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.

Verse 11

For this is the message you have heard from the beginning: that we should love one another.

For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.

Verse 12

Not like Cain, who was from the evil one and killed his brother. And why did he kill him? Because his deeds were evil and his brother’s were righteous.

Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous.

Verse 13

Do not be surprised, brothers and sisters, if the world hates you.

Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.

Verse 14

We know that we have passed from death to life because we love our brothers and sisters. The one who does not love remains in death.

We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.

Verse 15

Everyone who hates their brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in them.

Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.

Verse 16

This is how we have come to know love: He laid down His life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.

Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

Verse 17

But whoever has the world’s goods and sees a brother or sister in need, yet closes his heart against them, how does the love of God abide in him?

But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?

Verse 18

Little children, let us not love with words or tongue, but with actions and in truth.

My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.

Verse 19

By this we will know that we belong to the truth and will reassure our hearts in His presence.

And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him.

Verse 20

For whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart and knows all things.

For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.

Verse 21

Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God.

Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.

Verse 22

And whatever we ask, we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do what pleases Him.

And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

Verse 23

Now this is His commandment: that we believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as He commanded us.

And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.

Verse 24

The one who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. And by this we know that He abides in us: through the Spirit He has given us.

And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.
