Verse 1

The young boy Samuel was serving the Lord under Eli. In those days the word of the Lord was rare; visions were not widespread.

And the child Samuel ministered unto the LORD before Eli. And the word of the LORD was precious in those days; there was no open vision.

Verse 2

One day, Eli was lying in his usual place. His eyesight had begun to grow dim, so he could not see well.

And it came to pass at that time, when Eli was laid down in his place, and his eyes began to wax dim, that he could not see;

Verse 3

The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was.

And ere the lamp of God went out in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was, and Samuel was laid down to sleep;

Verse 4

Then the Lord called to Samuel, and he answered, "Here I am!"

That the LORD called Samuel: and he answered, Here am I.

Verse 5

Samuel ran to Eli and said, "Here I am, for you called me." But Eli said, "I did not call; go back and lie down." So Samuel went and lay down again.

And he ran unto Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou calledst me. And he said, I called not; lie down again. And he went and lay down.

Verse 6

The Lord called Samuel again. Samuel got up, went to Eli, and said, "Here I am, for you called me." But Eli said, "I did not call, my son. Go back and lie down."

And the LORD called yet again, Samuel. And Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And he answered, I called not, my son; lie down again.

Verse 7

Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, and the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him.

Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, neither was the word of the LORD yet revealed unto him.

Verse 8

The Lord called Samuel a third time, and he got up and went to Eli, saying, "Here I am, for you called me." Then Eli realized that the Lord was calling the boy.

And the LORD called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And Eli perceived that the LORD had called the child.

Verse 9

So Eli said to Samuel, "Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, 'Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.'" So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

Therefore Eli said unto Samuel, Go, lie down: and it shall be, if he call thee, that thou shalt say, Speak, LORD; for thy servant heareth. So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

Verse 10

The Lord came, stood there, and called as he had before: "Samuel! Samuel!" And Samuel said, "Speak, for your servant is listening."

And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth.

Verse 11

The Lord said to Samuel, "Look, I am going to do something in Israel that will cause everyone who hears about it to tremble.

And the LORD said to Samuel, Behold, I will do a thing in Israel, at which both the ears of every one that heareth it shall tingle.

Verse 12

On that day I will carry out everything I have spoken against Eli’s house, from beginning to end.

In that day I will perform against Eli all things which I have spoken concerning his house: when I begin, I will also make an end.

Verse 13

I have told him that I will judge his house forever because of the sin he knew about. His sons were cursing God, and he did not restrain them.

For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not.

Verse 14

Therefore, I have sworn to the house of Eli that the guilt of his house will never be atoned for by sacrifice or offering.

And therefore I have sworn unto the house of Eli, that the iniquity of Eli's house shall not be purged with sacrifice nor offering for ever.

Verse 15

Samuel lay down until morning. Then he opened the doors of the house of the Lord. He was afraid to tell Eli about the vision.

And Samuel lay until the morning, and opened the doors of the house of the LORD. And Samuel feared to shew Eli the vision.

Verse 16

But Eli called to Samuel and said, "Samuel, my son." Samuel answered, "Here I am."

Then Eli called Samuel, and said, Samuel, my son. And he answered, Here am I.

Verse 17

Eli asked, "What was it that he said to you? Do not hide it from me. May God deal with you severely if you hide from me anything he told you."

And he said, What is the thing that the LORD hath said unto thee? I pray thee hide it not from me: God do so to thee, and more also, if thou hide any thing from me of all the things that he said unto thee.

Verse 18

So Samuel told him everything and did not hide anything from him. Eli said, "He is the Lord; let him do what he thinks is best."

And Samuel told him every whit, and hid nothing from him. And he said, It is the LORD: let him do what seemeth him good.

Verse 19

Samuel grew up, and the Lord was with him, and he let none of Samuel's words fall to the ground.

And Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the ground.

Verse 20

All of Israel, from Dan to Beersheba, recognized that Samuel was a trustworthy prophet of the Lord.

And all Israel from Dan even to Beersheba knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of the LORD.

Verse 21

The Lord continued to appear at Shiloh, for he revealed himself to Samuel there through his word.

And the LORD appeared again in Shiloh: for the LORD revealed himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of the LORD.
