Verse 1

Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the command of God our Savior and Christ Jesus our hope,

Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the commandment of God our Saviour, and Lord Jesus Christ, which is our hope;

Verse 2

to Timothy, my true child in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

Unto Timothy, my own son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.

Verse 3

Just as I urged you to remain in Ephesus when I went to Macedonia, so that you might command certain people not to teach false doctrines,

As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine,

Verse 4

nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies, which promote speculations rather than the stewardship of God that is by faith.

Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.

Verse 5

The goal of our instruction is love that comes from a pure heart, a good conscience, and sincere faith.

Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:

Verse 6

Some have departed from these and turned aside to meaningless talk.

From which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling;

Verse 7

They want to be teachers of the law, but they do not understand what they are saying or what they so confidently affirm.

Desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm.

Verse 8

Now we know that the law is good if one uses it properly.

But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully;

Verse 9

We also know that the law is not made for the righteous but for the lawless and rebellious, the ungodly and sinners, the unholy and profane, those who strike their fathers and mothers, and murderers,

Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,

Verse 10

the sexually immoral, those who practice homosexuality, slave traders, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound doctrine,

For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;

Verse 11

in accordance with the gospel of the glory of the blessed God, which I have been entrusted with.

According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.

Verse 12

I give thanks to Christ Jesus our Lord, who has strengthened me, because He considered me faithful, appointing me to His service.

And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry;

Verse 13

Even though I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief.

Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.

Verse 14

The grace of our Lord overflowed abundantly along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.

And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.

Verse 15

This saying is trustworthy and deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the foremost.

This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.

Verse 16

But for this reason I was shown mercy, so that in me, the foremost of sinners, Christ Jesus might display His perfect patience as an example to those who would believe in Him for eternal life.

Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.

Verse 17

Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Verse 18

Timothy, my child, I entrust this charge to you, in keeping with the prophecies once made about you, so that by recalling them you may fight the good fight,

This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare;

Verse 19

holding on to faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and so have shipwrecked their faith.

Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck:

Verse 20

Among them are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan so that they may be taught not to blaspheme.

Of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander; whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme.
