After this, the Moabites, the Ammonites, and some of the Ammonites joined forces and came to wage war against Jehoshaphat.

It came to pass after this also, that the children of Moab, and the children of Ammon, and with them other beside the Ammonites, came against Jehoshaphat to battle.

Some men came and told Jehoshaphat, saying, 'A massive army is coming against you from Edom, from beyond the sea. They are already in Hazazon Tamar (that is, En Gedi).'

Then there came some that told Jehoshaphat, saying, There cometh a great multitude against thee from beyond the sea on this side Syria; and, behold, they be in Hazazontamar, which is Engedi.

Jehoshaphat was afraid, so he resolved to seek the LORD. He proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah.

And Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek the LORD, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah.

The people of Judah gathered together to seek help from the LORD; indeed, they came from every town in Judah to seek Him.

And Judah gathered themselves together, to ask help of the LORD: even out of all the cities of Judah they came to seek the LORD.

Jehoshaphat stood in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem in the house of the LORD before the new courtyard.

And Jehoshaphat stood in the congregation of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of the LORD, before the new court,

He said: 'LORD, the God of our ancestors, are you not the God in heaven? You rule over all the kingdoms of the nations. In your hand are power and might, and no one can withstand you.'

And said, O LORD God of our fathers, art not thou God in heaven? and rulest not thou over all the kingdoms of the heathen? and in thine hand is there not power and might, so that none is able to withstand thee?

'Our God, did you not drive out the inhabitants of this land before your people Israel and give it forever to the descendants of Abraham, your friend?'

Art not thou our God, who didst drive out the inhabitants of this land before thy people Israel, and gavest it to the seed of Abraham thy friend for ever?

They have lived in it and have built in it a sanctuary for your name, saying,

And they dwelt therein, and have built thee a sanctuary therein for thy name, saying,

'If disaster comes upon us—whether the sword, judgment, plague, or famine—we will stand before this temple and in your presence (for your name is in this temple) and cry out to you in our distress, and you will hear us and save us.'

If, when evil cometh upon us, as the sword, judgment, or pestilence, or famine, we stand before this house, and in thy presence, (for thy name is in this house,) and cry unto thee in our affliction, then thou wilt hear and help.

'But now, here are the men from Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, whose land you would not let Israel invade when they came from Egypt; so they turned away from them and did not destroy them.'

And now, behold, the children of Ammon and Moab and mount Seir, whom thou wouldest not let Israel invade, when they came out of the land of Egypt, but they turned from them, and destroyed them not;

'See how they are repaying us by coming to drive us out of the possession you gave us as an inheritance.'

Behold, I say, how they reward us, to come to cast us out of thy possession, which thou hast given us to inherit.

Our God, will you not judge them? For we have no power to face this vast army coming against us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.

O our God, wilt thou not judge them? for we have no might against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do: but our eyes are upon thee.

All the men of Judah, with their wives, children, and little ones, stood there before the LORD.

And all Judah stood before the LORD, with their little ones, their wives, and their children.

Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jahaziel son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite and descendant of Asaph, as he stood in the assembly.

Then upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, came the Spirit of the LORD in the midst of the congregation;

He said: 'Listen, all you people of Judah and Jerusalem! Listen, King Jehoshaphat! This is what the LORD says: Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s.'

And he said, Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the LORD unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God's.

Tomorrow march down against them. They will be climbing up by the Pass of Ziz, and you will find them at the end of the gorge in the desert of Jeruel.

To morrow go ye down against them: behold, they come up by the cliff of Ziz; and ye shall find them at the end of the brook, before the wilderness of Jeruel.

You will not have to fight this battle. Take up your positions, stand firm, and see the deliverance the LORD will give you, Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow, and the LORD will be with you.'

Ye shall not need to fight in this battle: set yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation of the LORD with you, O Judah and Jerusalem: fear not, nor be dismayed; to morrow go out against them: for the LORD will be with you.

Jehoshaphat bowed down with his face to the ground, and all the people of Judah and Jerusalem fell down in worship before the LORD.

And Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground: and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell before the LORD, worshipping the LORD.

Then some Levites from the Kohathites and Korahites stood up and praised the LORD, the God of Israel, with a very loud voice.

And the Levites, of the children of the Kohathites, and of the children of the Korhites, stood up to praise the LORD God of Israel with a loud voice on high.

Early in the morning they left for the Desert of Tekoa. As they set out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, 'Listen to me, Judah and people of Jerusalem! Have faith in the LORD your God and you will be upheld; have faith in his prophets and you will be successful.'

And they rose early in the morning, and went forth into the wilderness of Tekoa: and as they went forth, Jehoshaphat stood and said, Hear me, O Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem; Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper.

Jehoshaphat consulted with the people and appointed singers to sing to the LORD and give praise in the splendor of his holiness as they went out ahead of the army, singing: 'Give thanks to the LORD, for his love endures forever.'

And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the LORD, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the LORD; for his mercy endureth for ever.

As they began to sing and praise, the LORD set ambushes against the men of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir who were invading Judah, and they were defeated.

And when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten.

The Ammonites and Moabites rose up against the men from Mount Seir to destroy and annihilate them. After they finished slaughtering the men from Seir, they helped to destroy one another.

For the children of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of mount Seir, utterly to slay and destroy them: and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, every one helped to destroy another.

When the men of Judah came to the place overlooking the desert and looked toward the vast army, they saw only dead bodies lying on the ground; no one had escaped.

And when Judah came toward the watch tower in the wilderness, they looked unto the multitude, and, behold, they were dead bodies fallen to the earth, and none escaped.

So Jehoshaphat and his men went to carry off their plunder, and they found among them a great amount of equipment, clothing, and articles of value—more than they could take away. There was so much plunder that it took three days to collect it.

And when Jehoshaphat and his people came to take away the spoil of them, they found among them in abundance both riches with the dead bodies, and precious jewels, which they stripped off for themselves, more than they could carry away: and they were three days in gathering of the spoil, it was so much.

On the fourth day they assembled in the Valley of Berakah, where they praised the LORD. That is why it is called the Valley of Berakah to this day.

And on the fourth day they assembled themselves in the valley of Berachah; for there they blessed the LORD: therefore the name of the same place was called, The valley of Berachah, unto this day.

Then, led by Jehoshaphat, all the men of Judah and Jerusalem returned joyfully to Jerusalem, for the LORD had given them cause to rejoice over their enemies.

Then they returned, every man of Judah and Jerusalem, and Jehoshaphat in the forefront of them, to go again to Jerusalem with joy; for the LORD had made them to rejoice over their enemies.

They entered Jerusalem and went to the temple of the LORD with harps, lyres, and trumpets.

And they came to Jerusalem with psalteries and harps and trumpets unto the house of the LORD.

The fear of God came on all the surrounding kingdoms when they heard how the LORD had fought against the enemies of Israel.

And the fear of God was on all the kingdoms of those countries, when they had heard that the LORD fought against the enemies of Israel.

And the kingdom of Jehoshaphat was at peace, for his God had given him rest on every side.

So the realm of Jehoshaphat was quiet: for his God gave him rest round about.

So Jehoshaphat reigned over Judah. He was thirty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-five years. His mother’s name was Azubah, daughter of Shilhi.

And Jehoshaphat reigned over Judah: he was thirty and five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty and five years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Azubah the daughter of Shilhi.

Jehoshaphat followed the path of his father Asa and did not turn from it. He did what was right in the eyes of the LORD.

And he walked in the way of Asa his father, and departed not from it, doing that which was right in the sight of the LORD.

However, the high places were not removed, and the people still had not fully set their hearts on the God of their ancestors.

Howbeit the high places were not taken away: for as yet the people had not prepared their hearts unto the God of their fathers.

The rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, from beginning to end, are written in the records of Jehu son of Hanani, which were included in the Book of the Kings of Israel.

Now the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, first and last, behold, they are written in the book of Jehu the son of Hanani, who is mentioned in the book of the kings of Israel.

Later, Jehoshaphat king of Judah made an alliance with Ahaziah king of Israel, who acted wickedly.

And after this did Jehoshaphat king of Judah join himself with Ahaziah king of Israel, who did very wickedly:

He partnered with him to build ships to go to Tarshish, and they made the ships in Ezion Geber.

And he joined himself with him to make ships to go to Tarshish: and they made the ships in Eziongeber.

But Eliezer son of Dodavahu from Mareshah prophesied against Jehoshaphat, saying, 'Because you have allied yourself with Ahaziah, the LORD will destroy your works.' The ships were wrecked and were unable to sail to Tarshish.

Then Eliezer the son of Dodavah of Mareshah prophesied against Jehoshaphat, saying, Because thou hast joined thyself with Ahaziah, the LORD hath broken thy works. And the ships were broken, that they were not able to go to Tarshish.
