Joash was seven years old when he became king, and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Zibiah from Beersheba.

Joash did what was right in the eyes of the Lord all the days of Jehoiada the priest.

And Joash did that which was right in the sight of the LORD all the days of Jehoiada the priest.

Jehoiada arranged for Joash to marry two wives, and he fathered sons and daughters.

And Jehoiada took for him two wives; and he begat sons and daughters.

After this, Joash decided to restore the house of the Lord.

And it came to pass after this, that Joash was minded to repair the house of the LORD.

He gathered the priests and Levites and said to them, "Go out to the cities of Judah and collect from all Israel money to repair the house of your God annually. Hurry and do this task." But the Levites did not act quickly.

And he gathered together the priests and the Levites, and said to them, Go out unto the cities of Judah, and gather of all Israel money to repair the house of your God from year to year, and see that ye hasten the matter. Howbeit the Levites hastened it not.

So the king summoned Jehoiada, the chief priest, and said to him, "Why have you not required the Levites to bring in from Judah and Jerusalem the tax imposed by Moses, the servant of the Lord, and the congregation of Israel for the tent of the testimony?"

And the king called for Jehoiada the chief, and said unto him, Why hast thou not required of the Levites to bring in out of Judah and out of Jerusalem the collection, according to the commandment of Moses the servant of the LORD, and of the congregation of Israel, for the tabernacle of witness?

For the wicked Athaliah and her sons had broken into the house of God and had even used all the holy things of the Lord's house for the worship of the Baals.

For the sons of Athaliah, that wicked woman, had broken up the house of God; and also all the dedicated things of the house of the LORD did they bestow upon Baalim.

At the king's order, they made a chest and placed it outside at the gate of the house of the Lord.

And at the king's commandment they made a chest, and set it without at the gate of the house of the LORD.

A proclamation was issued throughout Judah and Jerusalem to bring to the Lord the tax Moses, the servant of God, had imposed on Israel in the wilderness.

And they made a proclamation through Judah and Jerusalem, to bring in to the LORD the collection that Moses the servant of God laid upon Israel in the wilderness.

All the officials and all the people rejoiced and brought their contributions, dropping them into the chest until it was full.

And all the princes and all the people rejoiced, and brought in, and cast into the chest, until they had made an end.

Whenever the chest was brought to the king's steward by the Levites, and they saw there was a large amount of money, the king's scribe and the high priest's officer came, emptied the chest, and returned it to its place. They did this day after day and collected a great amount of money.

Now it came to pass, that at what time the chest was brought unto the king's office by the hand of the Levites, and when they saw that there was much money, the king's scribe and the high priest's officer came and emptied the chest, and took it, and carried it to his place again. Thus they did day by day, and gathered money in abundance.

The king and Jehoiada gave the money to those who carried out the work of the Lord's temple. They hired stonemasons and carpenters to restore the temple and craftsmen to work with iron and bronze to repair the house of the Lord.

And the king and Jehoiada gave it to such as did the work of the service of the house of the LORD, and hired masons and carpenters to repair the house of the LORD, and also such as wrought iron and brass to mend the house of the LORD.

The workers diligently carried out their tasks, and the restoration of the temple made steady progress under their hands. They rebuilt the house of God according to its original design and strengthened it.

So the workmen wrought, and the work was perfected by them, and they set the house of God in his state, and strengthened it.

When the work was completed, they brought the remaining silver before the king and Jehoiada, and they used it to make utensils for the house of the Lord, including tools for service, bowls, and other articles of gold and silver. They regularly offered burnt offerings in the house of the Lord throughout the days of Jehoiada.

And when they had finished it, they brought the rest of the money before the king and Jehoiada, whereof were made vessels for the house of the LORD, even vessels to minister, and to offer withal, and spoons, and vessels of gold and silver. And they offered burnt offerings in the house of the LORD continually all the days of Jehoiada.

Jehoiada grew old and lived a full life. He died at the age of one hundred and thirty years.

But Jehoiada waxed old, and was full of days when he died; an hundred and thirty years old was he when he died.

He was buried in the City of David with the kings because he had done great good in Israel, for God, and for His temple.

And they buried him in the city of David among the kings, because he had done good in Israel, both toward God, and toward his house.

After the death of Jehoiada, the officials of Judah came and bowed before the king, and the king listened to their advice.

Now after the death of Jehoiada came the princes of Judah, and made obeisance to the king. Then the king hearkened unto them.

They abandoned the house of the Lord, the God of their ancestors, and started worshiping the Asherah poles and idols. As a result, God's wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem because of their guilt.

And they left the house of the LORD God of their fathers, and served groves and idols: and wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem for this their trespass.

The Lord sent prophets among them to bring them back to Him, but though the prophets testified against them, they refused to listen.

Yet he sent prophets to them, to bring them again unto the LORD; and they testified against them: but they would not give ear.

Then the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah, the son of Jehoiada the priest. Standing above the people, he said to them, 'This is what God says: Why do you disobey the Lord's commands and bring about your own failure? Because you have forsaken the Lord, He has also forsaken you.'

And the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, which stood above the people, and said unto them, Thus saith God, Why transgress ye the commandments of the LORD, that ye cannot prosper? because ye have forsaken the LORD, he hath also forsaken you.

But they conspired against him, and at the king's command, they stoned him to death in the courtyard of the house of the Lord.

And they conspired against him, and stoned him with stones at the commandment of the king in the court of the house of the LORD.

King Joash did not remember the kindness that Jehoiada, Zechariah's father, had shown him but killed his son. As Zechariah was dying, he said, 'May the Lord see this and call you to account.'

Thus Joash the king remembered not the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him, but slew his son. And when he died, he said, The LORD look upon it, and require it.

At the turn of the year, the Aramean army came up against Joash. They invaded Judah and Jerusalem, and they destroyed all the leaders of the people, sending all the plunder to the king of Damascus.

And it came to pass at the end of the year, that the host of Syria came up against him: and they came to Judah and Jerusalem, and destroyed all the princes of the people from among the people, and sent all the spoil of them unto the king of Damascus.

Though the Aramean army had come with only a small force of men, the Lord delivered into their hands a very large army because Judah had forsaken the Lord, the God of their ancestors. So they executed judgment against Joash.

For the army of the Syrians came with a small company of men, and the LORD delivered a very great host into their hand, because they had forsaken the LORD God of their fathers. So they executed judgment against Joash.

When the Arameans withdrew, leaving Joash severely wounded, his officials conspired against him for murdering the sons of Jehoiada the priest. They killed him on his bed, and he died. He was buried in the City of David, but not in the tombs of the kings.

And when they were departed from him, (for they left him in great diseases,) his own servants conspired against him for the blood of the sons of Jehoiada the priest, and slew him on his bed, and he died: and they buried him in the city of David, but they buried him not in the sepulchres of the kings.

Those who conspired against him were Zabad son of Shimeath, an Ammonite woman, and Jehozabad son of Shimrith, a Moabite woman.

And these are they that conspired against him; Zabad the son of Shimeath an Ammonitess, and Jehozabad the son of Shimrith a Moabitess.

The account of his sons, the many pronouncements against him, and the restoration of the house of God are written in the commentary of the Book of the Kings. And his son Amaziah succeeded him as king.

Now concerning his sons, and the greatness of the burdens laid upon him, and the repairing of the house of God, behold, they are written in the story of the book of the kings. And Amaziah his son reigned in his stead.
