1 Joash was seven years old when he began to reign.

In the seventh year of Jehu Jehoash began to reign; and forty years reigned he in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Zibiah of Beersheba.

2 In the seventh year of Jehu, Joash became king, and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Zibiah, and she was from Beersheba.

And Jehoash did that which was right in the sight of the LORD all his days wherein Jehoiada the priest instructed him.

3 Joash did what was right in the eyes of the LORD all the days that Jehoiada the priest instructed him.

But the high places were not taken away: the people still sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places.

4 However, the high places were not removed; the people still sacrificed and burned incense on the high places.

And Jehoash said to the priests, All the money of the dedicated things that is brought into the house of the LORD, even the money of every one that passeth the account, the money that every man is set at, and all the money that cometh into any man's heart to bring into the house of the LORD,

5 Joash said to the priests, 'All the money dedicated as holy gifts brought to the temple of the LORD—that is, the census money, the assessed value for individuals, and all the money that anyone approaches with a willing heart to bring to the temple of the LORD—

Let the priests take it to them, every man of his acquaintance: and let them repair the breaches of the house, wheresoever any breach shall be found.

6 let the priests receive it each from their acquaintances, and they shall use it to repair any damage found in the temple.'

But it was so, that in the three and twentieth year of king Jehoash the priests had not repaired the breaches of the house.

7 But by the twenty-third year of King Joash, the priests had not repaired the damage to the temple.

Then king Jehoash called for Jehoiada the priest, and the other priests, and said unto them, Why repair ye not the breaches of the house? now therefore receive no more money of your acquaintance, but deliver it for the breaches of the house.

8 So King Joash called Jehoiada the priest and the other priests and said to them, 'Why are you not repairing the damage to the temple? Therefore, do not take money from your donors anymore but give it directly for the temple’s repairs.'

And the priests consented to receive no more money of the people, neither to repair the breaches of the house.

9 The priests agreed not to collect money from the people nor to handle the repairs of the temple themselves.

But Jehoiada the priest took a chest, and bored a hole in the lid of it, and set it beside the altar, on the right side as one cometh into the house of the LORD: and the priests that kept the door put therein all the money that was brought into the house of the LORD.

10 Jehoiada the priest took a chest, bored a hole in its lid, and placed it beside the altar, on the right side as one enters the temple of the LORD. The priests guarding the threshold deposited into it all the money brought to the temple of the LORD.

And it was so, when they saw that there was much money in the chest, that the king's scribe and the high priest came up, and they put up in bags, and told the money that was found in the house of the LORD.

11 Whenever they saw there was a lot of money in the chest, the king’s scribe and the high priest would come, count the money that had been brought to the temple of the LORD, and put it into bags.

And they gave the money, being told, into the hands of them that did the work, that had the oversight of the house of the LORD: and they laid it out to the carpenters and builders, that wrought upon the house of the LORD,

12 They would give the prepared money to the workers appointed to oversee the repairs to the temple of the LORD. They used it to pay the carpenters and builders working on the temple of the LORD,

And to masons, and hewers of stone, and to buy timber and hewed stone to repair the breaches of the house of the LORD, and for all that was laid out for the house to repair it.

13 the masons and stonecutters, and to purchase timber and cut stone for repairing the damage to the temple of the LORD, as well as to cover all other costs related to the temple repairs.

Howbeit there were not made for the house of the LORD bowls of silver, snuffers, basons, trumpets, any vessels of gold, or vessels of silver, of the money that was brought into the house of the LORD:

14 However, no silver basins, snuffers, bowls, trumpets, or any gold or silver vessels were made from the money brought to the temple of the LORD.

But they gave that to the workmen, and repaired therewith the house of the LORD.

15 Instead, they gave the money to the workers, who used it to repair the temple of the LORD.

Moreover they reckoned not with the men, into whose hand they delivered the money to be bestowed on workmen: for they dealt faithfully.

16 No accounting was required from the men who handled the money given to the workers, because they acted with integrity.

The trespass money and sin money was not brought into the house of the LORD: it was the priests'.

17 The money from guilt offerings and sin offerings was not brought to the temple of the LORD; it belonged to the priests.

Then Hazael king of Syria went up, and fought against Gath, and took it: and Hazael set his face to go up to Jerusalem.

18 At that time, Hazael king of Aram went up and fought against Gath and captured it. Then he turned to attack Jerusalem.

And Jehoash king of Judah took all the hallowed things that Jehoshaphat, and Jehoram, and Ahaziah, his fathers, kings of Judah, had dedicated, and his own hallowed things, and all the gold that was found in the treasures of the house of the LORD, and in the king's house, and sent it to Hazael king of Syria: and he went away from Jerusalem.

19 But Joash king of Judah took all the sacred items that had been dedicated by his forefathers—Jehoshaphat, Jehoram, and Ahaziah, kings of Judah, along with his own sacred gifts and all the gold found in the treasuries of the temple of the LORD and the royal palace—and sent them to Hazael king of Aram. Then Hazael withdrew from Jerusalem.

And the rest of the acts of Joash, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?

20 The rest of the acts of Joash and all that he did are written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah.

And his servants arose, and made a conspiracy, and slew Joash in the house of Millo, which goeth down to Silla.

21 Joash’s officials conspired against him and assassinated him at Beth Millo, on the road down to Silla.

For Jozachar the son of Shimeath, and Jehozabad the son of Shomer, his servants, smote him, and he died; and they buried him with his fathers in the city of David: and Amaziah his son reigned in his stead.

22 The officials who conspired against him were Jozabad son of Shimeath and Jehozabad son of Shomer. They killed him, and he was buried with his ancestors in the City of David. Then his son Amaziah became king in his place.
