Verse 1

Simeon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have obtained a faith of equal value with ours through the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ:

Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ:

Verse 2

May grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.

Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,

Verse 3

His divine power has granted us everything we need for life and godliness through the knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence.

According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:

Verse 4

Through these, He has given us His very great and precious promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.

Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

Verse 5

For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith virtue; to virtue, knowledge;

And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;

Verse 6

to knowledge, self-control; to self-control, perseverance; to perseverance, godliness;

And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;

Verse 7

to godliness, brotherly love; and to brotherly love, love.

And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.

Verse 8

For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they will keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Verse 9

But whoever lacks these qualities is blind and short-sighted, forgetful of the cleansing of their former sins.

But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.

Verse 10

Therefore, brothers and sisters, make every effort to confirm your calling and election; for if you do these things, you will never stumble.

Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:

Verse 11

And in this way, your entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be richly provided for you.

For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

Verse 12

Therefore, I will always remind you about these things, even though you already know them and are established in the truth you now have.

Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth.

Verse 13

I think it is right, as long as I am in this earthly tent, to stir you up by way of reminder,

Yea, I think it meet, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance;

Verse 14

knowing that the laying aside of my tent is imminent, as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me.

Knowing that shortly I must put off this my tabernacle, even as our Lord Jesus Christ hath shewed me.

Verse 15

And I will also make every effort to ensure that after my departure, you will always be able to remember these things.

Moreover I will endeavour that ye may be able after my decease to have these things always in remembrance.

Verse 16

For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty.

For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty.

Verse 17

For He received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice was conveyed to Him by the Majestic Glory: 'This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.'

For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

Verse 18

We ourselves heard this voice, which came from heaven, when we were with Him on the holy mountain.

And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount.

Verse 19

And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.

We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:

Verse 20

Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture comes from one’s own interpretation.

Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.

Verse 21

For prophecy was never produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
