Acts 14

1 At Iconium, Paul and Barnabas went together into the Jewish synagogue and spoke in such a way that a large number of both Jews and Greeks believed.

And it came to pass in Iconium, that they went both together into the synagogue of the Jews, and so spake, that a great multitude both of the Jews and also of the Greeks believed.

2 But the Jews who refused to believe stirred up the minds of the Gentiles and turned them against the brothers.

But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles, and made their minds evil affected against the brethren.

3 So Paul and Barnabas stayed there for a considerable time, speaking boldly in reliance on the Lord, who confirmed the message of his grace by granting signs and wonders to be done through their hands.

Long time therefore abode they speaking boldly in the Lord, which gave testimony unto the word of his grace, and granted signs and wonders to be done by their hands.

4 The people of the city were divided; some sided with the Jews, while others supported the apostles.

But the multitude of the city was divided: and part held with the Jews, and part with the apostles.

5 When both Gentiles and Jews, along with their leaders, made a violent attempt to mistreat and stone them,

And when there was an assault made both of the Gentiles, and also of the Jews with their rulers, to use them despitefully, and to stone them,

6 Paul and Barnabas became aware of it and fled to the cities of Lycaonia—Lystra and Derbe—and the surrounding region.

They were ware of it, and fled unto Lystra and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia, and unto the region that lieth round about:

7 There they continued preaching the good news.

And there they preached the gospel.

8 In Lystra, there was a man who could not use his feet; he was lame from birth and had never walked.

And there sat a certain man at Lystra, impotent in his feet, being a cripple from his mother's womb, who never had walked:

9 This man was listening to Paul as he spoke. Paul looked intently at him and saw that he had faith to be healed.

The same heard Paul speak: who stedfastly beholding him, and perceiving that he had faith to be healed,

10 Paul said loudly, 'Stand upright on your feet!' And the man jumped up and began to walk.

Said with a loud voice, Stand upright on thy feet. And he leaped and walked.

11 When the crowd saw what Paul had done, they raised their voices in the Lycaonian language, saying, 'The gods have come down to us in human form!'

And when the people saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voices, saying in the speech of Lycaonia, The gods are come down to us in the likeness of men.

12 They called Barnabas Zeus and Paul Hermes, because he was the chief speaker.

And they called Barnabas, Jupiter; and Paul, Mercurius, because he was the chief speaker.

13 The priest of Zeus, whose temple was outside the city, brought bulls and garlands to the gates, intending to offer sacrifices with the crowds.

Then the priest of Jupiter, which was before their city, brought oxen and garlands unto the gates, and would have done sacrifice with the people.

14 But when the apostles, Barnabas and Paul, heard about it, they tore their clothes and rushed into the crowd, shouting,

Which when the apostles, Barnabas and Paul, heard of, they rent their clothes, and ran in among the people, crying out,

15 They cried out, 'Men, why are you doing these things? We are also humans with the same nature as you, proclaiming the good news to you, that you should turn from these worthless things to the living God, who made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and everything in them.'

And saying, Sirs, why do ye these things? We also are men of like passions with you, and preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the living God, which made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all things that are therein:

16 In past generations, he allowed all the nations to walk in their own ways.

Who in times past suffered all nations to walk in their own ways.

17 Yet, he did not leave himself without a witness, for he gave you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons, filling you with food and gladness in your hearts.

Nevertheless he left not himself without witness, in that he did good, and gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness.

18 Even with these words, they barely restrained the crowds from sacrificing to them.

And with these sayings scarce restrained they the people, that they had not done sacrifice unto them.

19 But some Jews from Antioch and Iconium arrived, persuaded the crowds, and they stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city, thinking he was dead.

And there came thither certain Jews from Antioch and Iconium, who persuaded the people, and, having stoned Paul, drew him out of the city, supposing he had been dead.

20 But when the disciples gathered around him, he got up and went back into the city. The next day, he departed with Barnabas to Derbe.

Howbeit, as the disciples stood round about him, he rose up, and came into the city: and the next day he departed with Barnabas to Derbe.

21 After they had preached the gospel in that city and made many disciples, they returned to Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch,

And when they had preached the gospel to that city, and had taught many, they returned again to Lystra, and to Iconium, and Antioch,

22 strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to continue in the faith, saying, 'We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God.'

Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God.

23 They appointed elders for them in each church and, with prayer and fasting, committed them to the Lord in whom they had believed.

And when they had ordained them elders in every church, and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, on whom they believed.

24 Then they passed through Pisidia and came to Pamphylia.

And after they had passed throughout Pisidia, they came to Pamphylia.

25 After proclaiming the word in Perga, they went down to Attalia.

And when they had preached the word in Perga, they went down into Attalia:

26 From there, they sailed back to Antioch, where they had been entrusted to the grace of God for the work they had now completed.

And thence sailed to Antioch, from whence they had been recommended to the grace of God for the work which they fulfilled.

27 When they arrived and gathered the church together, they reported all that God had done through them and how he had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles.

And when they were come, and had gathered the church together, they rehearsed all that God had done with them, and how he had opened the door of faith unto the Gentiles.

28 And they stayed there a considerable time with the disciples.

And there they abode long time with the disciples.
