Verse 1

Then we turned and traveled on the road to Bashan. Og, king of Bashan, came out with all his people to confront us in battle at Edrei.

Then we turned, and went up the way to Bashan: and Og the king of Bashan came out against us, he and all his people, to battle at Edrei.

Verse 2

The LORD said to me: 'Do not be afraid of him, for I have handed him over to you along with all his people and his land. Do to him as you did to Sihon, king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon.'

And the LORD said unto me, Fear him not: for I will deliver him, and all his people, and his land, into thy hand; and thou shalt do unto him as thou didst unto Sihon king of the Amorites, which dwelt at Heshbon.

Verse 3

So the LORD our God also gave us Og, king of Bashan, and all his people. We struck them down until no survivors remained.

So the LORD our God delivered into our hands Og also, the king of Bashan, and all his people: and we smote him until none was left to him remaining.

Verse 4

We captured all his cities at that time—there was not a city we did not take from them—sixty cities in all, the entire region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan.

And we took all his cities at that time, there was not a city which we took not from them, threescore cities, all the region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan.

Verse 5

All these cities were fortified with high walls, gates, and bars, besides many unwalled rural towns.

All these cities were fenced with high walls, gates, and bars; beside unwalled towns a great many.

Verse 6

We completely destroyed them, just as we had done to Sihon, king of Heshbon. In every city, we destroyed the men, women, and children.

And we utterly destroyed them, as we did unto Sihon king of Heshbon, utterly destroying the men, women, and children, of every city.

Verse 7

But we kept all the livestock and the spoils of the cities for ourselves.

But all the cattle, and the spoil of the cities, we took for a prey to ourselves.

Verse 8

At that time, we took the land from the two Amorite kings across the Jordan, from the Arnon Gorge to Mount Hermon.

And we took at that time out of the hand of the two kings of the Amorites the land that was on this side Jordan, from the river of Arnon unto mount Hermon;

Verse 9

(The Sidonians call Hermon 'Sirion,' and the Amorites call it 'Senir.')

(Which Hermon the Sidonians call Sirion; and the Amorites call it Shenir;)

Verse 10

We captured all the cities of the plateau, all of Gilead, and all of Bashan as far as Salecah and Edrei—cities of Og's kingdom in Bashan.

All the cities of the plain, and all Gilead, and all Bashan, unto Salchah and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan.

Verse 11

For only Og, king of Bashan, remained from the remnant of the Rephaim. Look, his bed was made of iron and is still in Rabbah of the Ammonites. It is nine cubits long and four cubits wide, according to the standard cubit.

For only Og king of Bashan remained of the remnant of giants; behold, his bedstead was a bedstead of iron; is it not in Rabbath of the children of Ammon? nine cubits was the length thereof, and four cubits the breadth of it, after the cubit of a man.

Verse 12

At that time, we took possession of this land, from Aroer on the edge of the Arnon Valley, and half of the hill country of Gilead with its towns, and I gave them to the Reubenites and the Gadites.

And this land, which we possessed at that time, from Aroer, which is by the river Arnon, and half mount Gilead, and the cities thereof, gave I unto the Reubenites and to the Gadites.

Verse 13

The rest of Gilead and all of Bashan, the kingdom of Og, I gave to half the tribe of Manasseh. The entire region of Argob in Bashan is called the land of the Rephaim.

And the rest of Gilead, and all Bashan, being the kingdom of Og, gave I unto the half tribe of Manasseh; all the region of Argob, with all Bashan, which was called the land of giants.

Verse 14

Jair, a descendant of Manasseh, took the whole region of Argob as far as the border of the Geshurites and the Maacathites. He named the villages of Bashan after himself, calling them Havvoth Jair, and they remain so to this day.

Jair the son of Manasseh took all the country of Argob unto the coasts of Geshuri and Maachathi; and called them after his own name, Bashanhavothjair, unto this day.

Verse 15

I gave Gilead to Machir.

And I gave Gilead unto Machir.

Verse 16

To the Reubenites and the Gadites I gave the land extending from Gilead to the Arnon Valley, with the valley as the border, as far as the Jabbok River, the border of the Ammonites.

And unto the Reubenites and unto the Gadites I gave from Gilead even unto the river Arnon half the valley, and the border even unto the river Jabbok, which is the border of the children of Ammon;

Verse 17

The Arabah, the Jordan, and its border, from Chinnereth to the east side of the Dead Sea (the Sea of the Arabah), beneath the slopes of Pisgah, was also included.

The plain also, and Jordan, and the coast thereof, from Chinnereth even unto the sea of the plain, even the salt sea, under Ashdothpisgah eastward.

Verse 18

At that time I commanded you: 'The LORD your God has given you this land to take possession of it. All your fighting men, fully armed, must cross over ahead of your fellow Israelites.'

And I commanded you at that time, saying, The LORD your God hath given you this land to possess it: ye shall pass over armed before your brethren the children of Israel, all that are meet for the war.

Verse 19

'But your wives, children, and livestock—I know you have much livestock—may stay in the towns I have given you.'

But your wives, and your little ones, and your cattle, (for I know that ye have much cattle,) shall abide in your cities which I have given you;

Verse 20

'You are to help your fellow Israelites until the LORD gives them rest, as He has done for you, and they too have taken possession of the land the LORD your God is giving them across the Jordan. After that, each of you may return to the possession I have given you.'

Until the LORD have given rest unto your brethren, as well as unto you, and until they also possess the land which the LORD your God hath given them beyond Jordan: and then shall ye return every man unto his possession, which I have given you.

Verse 21

At that time, I also commanded Joshua, saying, 'Your own eyes have seen everything the LORD your God has done to these two kings. The LORD will do the same to all the kingdoms where you are crossing over.'

And I commanded Joshua at that time, saying, Thine eyes have seen all that the LORD your God hath done unto these two kings: so shall the LORD do unto all the kingdoms whither thou passest.

Verse 22

Do not be afraid of them, for the LORD your God is the one who fights for you.

Ye shall not fear them: for the LORD your God he shall fight for you.

Verse 23

At that time, I pleaded with the LORD,

And I besought the LORD at that time, saying,

Verse 24

‘O Lord GOD, You have begun to show Your servant Your greatness and Your strong hand. For what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do the deeds and mighty works You do?’

O Lord GOD, thou hast begun to shew thy servant thy greatness, and thy mighty hand: for what God is there in heaven or in earth, that can do according to thy works, and according to thy might?

Verse 25

‘Please let me cross over and see the good land on the other side of the Jordan—that fine hill country and Lebanon.’

I pray thee, let me go over, and see the good land that is beyond Jordan, that goodly mountain, and Lebanon.

Verse 26

But the LORD was angry with me because of you and would not listen to me. Instead, the LORD said to me, ‘That is enough! Do not speak to Me anymore about this matter.’

But the LORD was wroth with me for your sakes, and would not hear me: and the LORD said unto me, Let it suffice thee; speak no more unto me of this matter.

Verse 27

‘Go up to the top of Pisgah and look west, north, south, and east. See it with your eyes, for you will not cross the Jordan.’

Get thee up into the top of Pisgah, and lift up thine eyes westward, and northward, and southward, and eastward, and behold it with thine eyes: for thou shalt not go over this Jordan.

Verse 28

‘Charge Joshua and encourage him, for he will lead this people across and enable them to inherit the land that you will see.’

But charge Joshua, and encourage him, and strengthen him: for he shall go over before this people, and he shall cause them to inherit the land which thou shalt see.

Verse 29

So we stayed in the valley near Beth Peor.

So we abode in the valley over against Bethpeor.
