1 Now Sarai, Abram's wife, had not borne him any children. But she had an Egyptian maidservant whose name was Hagar.

Now Sarai Abram's wife bare him no children: and she had an handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar.

2 So Sarai said to Abram, "Look, the LORD has prevented me from having children. Please go to my maidservant; perhaps I can build a family through her." And Abram listened to Sarai's voice.

And Sarai said unto Abram, Behold now, the LORD hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai.

3 After Abram had lived in the land of Canaan for ten years, Sarai, Abram's wife, took Hagar the Egyptian, her maidservant, and gave her to Abram as a wife.

And Sarai Abram's wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife.

4 He went in to Hagar, and she conceived. When Hagar saw that she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress.

And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived: and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.

5 Then Sarai said to Abram, "The wrong done to me is your fault. I gave my maidservant into your arms, and now that she knows she is pregnant, I am despised in her eyes. May the LORD judge between you and me."

And Sarai said unto Abram, My wrong be upon thee: I have given my maid into thy bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes: the LORD judge between me and thee.

6 Abram said to Sarai, "Your maidservant is in your hands; do with her whatever you think is best." Then Sarai mistreated Hagar, and she fled from her presence.

But Abram said unto Sarai, Behold, thy maid is in thy hand; do to her as it pleaseth thee. And when Sarai dealt hardly with her, she fled from her face.

7 The angel of the LORD found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, the spring on the way to Shur.

And the angel of the LORD found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur.

8 He said, "Hagar, Sarai's maidservant, where have you come from, and where are you going?" She answered, "I am fleeing from the presence of my mistress Sarai."

And he said, Hagar, Sarai's maid, whence camest thou? and whither wilt thou go? And she said, I flee from the face of my mistress Sarai.

9 Then the angel of the LORD said to her, "Return to your mistress and submit to her authority."

And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands.

10 The angel of the LORD also said, "I will greatly multiply your offspring so that they cannot be counted because of their great numbers."

And the angel of the LORD said unto her, I will multiply thy seed exceedingly, that it shall not be numbered for multitude.

11 The angel of the LORD said to her, "You are now pregnant and will give birth to a son. You shall name him Ishmael, because the LORD has heard of your misery."

And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Behold, thou art with child, and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael; because the LORD hath heard thy affliction.

12 He will be a wild man; his hand will be against everyone, and everyone's hand will be against him. He will live in hostility toward all his brothers.

And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man's hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.

13 So Hagar called the name of the LORD who spoke to her, 'You are the God who sees me,' for she said, 'Have I truly seen the One who sees me here?'

And she called the name of the LORD that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth me?

14 Therefore the well was called Beer Lahai Roi; it is located between Kadesh and Bered.

Wherefore the well was called Beerlahairoi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.

15 Hagar bore a son to Abram, and Abram named the son whom Hagar bore, Ishmael.

And Hagar bare Abram a son: and Abram called his son's name, which Hagar bare, Ishmael.

16 Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to him.

And Abram was fourscore and six years old, when Hagar bare Ishmael to Abram.
