Genesis 29
30→

1 Jacob lifted his feet and set out toward the land of the people of the east.

Then Jacob went on his journey, and came into the land of the people of the east.

2 He saw a well in the field, and behold, three flocks of sheep were lying beside it because that well was where the flocks were watered. A large stone was over the mouth of the well.

And he looked, and behold a well in the field, and, lo, there were three flocks of sheep lying by it; for out of that well they watered the flocks: and a great stone was upon the well's mouth.

3 All the flocks would gather there, and the shepherds would roll the stone away from the well’s opening to water the sheep, and then they would put the stone back over the well’s mouth in its place.

And thither were all the flocks gathered: and they rolled the stone from the well's mouth, and watered the sheep, and put the stone again upon the well's mouth in his place.

4 Jacob said to them, 'My brothers, where are you from?' They replied, 'We are from Haran.'

And Jacob said unto them, My brethren, whence be ye? And they said, Of Haran are we.

5 He asked them, 'Do you know Laban, the son of Nahor?' They answered, 'We know him.'

And he said unto them, Know ye Laban the son of Nahor? And they said, We know him.

6 Then he asked, 'Is he well?' They said, 'He is well, and look, Rachel his daughter is coming with the sheep.'

And he said unto them, Is he well? And they said, He is well: and, behold, Rachel his daughter cometh with the sheep.

7 He said, 'Look, the day is still high; it is not time to gather the livestock. Water the sheep and take them out to pasture.'

And he said, Lo, it is yet high day, neither is it time that the cattle should be gathered together: water ye the sheep, and go and feed them.

8 But they said, 'We cannot until all the flocks have been gathered and the stone is rolled away from the well’s mouth. Then we will water the sheep.'

And they said, We cannot, until all the flocks be gathered together, and till they roll the stone from the well's mouth; then we water the sheep.

9 While he was still speaking with them, Rachel came with her father’s sheep, for she was a shepherdess.

And while he yet spake with them, Rachel came with her father's sheep: for she kept them.

10 When Jacob saw Rachel, the daughter of Laban, his mother's brother, and Laban’s sheep, he went up, rolled the stone away from the well’s mouth, and watered his uncle Laban’s sheep.

And it came to pass, when Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban his mother's brother, and the sheep of Laban his mother's brother, that Jacob went near, and rolled the stone from the well's mouth, and watered the flock of Laban his mother's brother.

11 Then Jacob kissed Rachel and wept aloud.

And Jacob kissed Rachel, and lifted up his voice, and wept.

12 Jacob told Rachel that he was a relative of her father and that he was Rebekah’s son. She ran and told her father.

And Jacob told Rachel that he was her father's brother, and that he was Rebekah's son: and she ran and told her father.

13 When Laban heard the news about Jacob, his sister's son, he ran to meet him, embraced him, kissed him, and brought him to his house. Jacob told Laban everything that had happened.

And it came to pass, when Laban heard the tidings of Jacob his sister's son, that he ran to meet him, and embraced him, and kissed him, and brought him to his house. And he told Laban all these things.

14 Then Laban said to him, 'Surely you are my own flesh and blood.' Jacob stayed with him for a month.

And Laban said to him, Surely thou art my bone and my flesh. And he abode with him the space of a month.

15 Laban said to Jacob, 'Because you are my relative, should you work for me for nothing? Tell me, what should your wages be?'

And Laban said unto Jacob, Because thou art my brother, shouldest thou therefore serve me for nought? tell me, what shall thy wages be?

16 Now Laban had two daughters: The name of the older was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel.

And Laban had two daughters: the name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel.

17 Leah had tender eyes, but Rachel was beautiful in form and appearance.

Leah was tender eyed; but Rachel was beautiful and well favoured.

18 Jacob loved Rachel, so he said, 'I will serve you seven years for Rachel, your younger daughter.'

And Jacob loved Rachel; and said, I will serve thee seven years for Rachel thy younger daughter.

19 Laban replied, 'It is better for me to give her to you than to another man. Stay here with me.'

And Laban said, It is better that I give her to thee, than that I should give her to another man: abide with me.

20 So Jacob worked seven years for Rachel, but they seemed like only a few days to him because of his love for her.

And Jacob served seven years for Rachel; and they seemed unto him but a few days, for the love he had to her.

21 Then Jacob said to Laban, 'Give me my wife, for my time is completed, and I want to be with her.'

And Jacob said unto Laban, Give me my wife, for my days are fulfilled, that I may go in unto her.

22 So Laban gathered all the men of the place and held a feast.

And Laban gathered together all the men of the place, and made a feast.

23 But that evening, he took his daughter Leah and brought her to Jacob, and Jacob was with her.

And it came to pass in the evening, that he took Leah his daughter, and brought her to him; and he went in unto her.

24 Laban also gave his servant Zilpah to his daughter Leah as her maidservant.

And Laban gave unto his daughter Leah Zilpah his maid for an handmaid.

25 In the morning, Jacob saw it was Leah. So he said to Laban, 'What is this you have done to me? Didn’t I serve you for Rachel? Why have you deceived me?'

And it came to pass, that in the morning, behold, it was Leah: and he said to Laban, What is this thou hast done unto me? did not I serve with thee for Rachel? wherefore then hast thou beguiled me?

26 Laban replied, 'It is not our custom here to give the younger daughter before the older one.'

And Laban said, It must not be so done in our country, to give the younger before the firstborn.

27 'Complete this week’s celebration with Leah, and we will give you Rachel also, in return for another seven years of work.'

Fulfil her week, and we will give thee this also for the service which thou shalt serve with me yet seven other years.

28 Jacob did so and completed the week with Leah. Then Laban gave him his daughter Rachel to be his wife.

And Jacob did so, and fulfilled her week: and he gave him Rachel his daughter to wife also.

29 Laban also gave his servant Bilhah to his daughter Rachel as her maidservant.

And Laban gave to Rachel his daughter Bilhah his handmaid to be her maid.

30 Jacob was also with Rachel, and he loved Rachel more than Leah. And he worked for Laban another seven years.

And he went in also unto Rachel, and he loved also Rachel more than Leah, and served with him yet seven other years.

31 When the LORD saw that Leah was unloved, He opened her womb, but Rachel remained barren.

And when the LORD saw that Leah was hated, he opened her womb: but Rachel was barren.

32 Leah conceived and gave birth to a son, and she named him Reuben, for she said, 'Because the LORD has seen my misery, surely now my husband will love me.'

And Leah conceived, and bare a son, and she called his name Reuben: for she said, Surely the LORD hath looked upon my affliction; now therefore my husband will love me.

33 She conceived again and gave birth to a son, and she said, 'Because the LORD heard that I am unloved, He has given me this one too.' So she named him Simeon.

And she conceived again, and bare a son; and said, Because the LORD hath heard that I was hated, he hath therefore given me this son also: and she called his name Simeon.

34 She conceived again and gave birth to a son and said, 'Now at this time my husband will be attached to me, because I have borne him three sons.' Therefore, he was named Levi.

And she conceived again, and bare a son; and said, Now this time will my husband be joined unto me, because I have born him three sons: therefore was his name called Levi.

35 She conceived yet again and gave birth to a son and said, 'This time I will praise the LORD.' Therefore, she named him Judah. Then she stopped having children.

And she conceived again, and bare a son: and she said, Now will I praise the LORD: therefore she called his name Judah; and left bearing.
