    1Joseph was brought down to Egypt, and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh and the captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had brought him there.

    2The LORD was with Joseph, and he became a successful man, serving in the house of his Egyptian master.

    3His master saw that the LORD was with him and that the LORD gave him success in everything he did.

    4Joseph found favor in his master's eyes and became his personal servant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household and entrusted everything he owned to his care.

    5From the time he put Joseph in charge of his household and all that he owned, the LORD blessed the Egyptian's house on account of Joseph. The LORD's blessing was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field.

    6So Potiphar left everything he had in Joseph's care; with Joseph in charge, he paid no attention to anything except the food he ate. Now Joseph was handsome in form and appearance.

    7After some time, his master's wife looked at Joseph with desire and said, "Sleep with me."

    8But Joseph refused and said to his master's wife, "Look, my master does not concern himself with anything in the house; he has entrusted everything he owns to my care.

    9"No one in this house is greater than I am. He has not withheld anything from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?"

    10Though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to lie with her or even be with her.

    12She caught him by his garment and said, "Sleep with me!" But Joseph left his garment in her hand, ran away, and went outside.

    13When she saw that he had left his garment in her hand and fled outside,

    14she called her household servants and said to them, "Look, this Hebrew man has been brought to us to mock us! He came to me to lie with me, but I screamed loudly.

    15When he heard me raise my voice and scream, he left his garment beside me and ran outside."

    16She kept his garment beside her until his master came home.

    17Then she told him this story: "That Hebrew servant you brought to us came to mock me.

    18But when I raised my voice and screamed, he left his garment beside me and fled outside."

    19When his master heard the story that his wife told him, saying, "This is how your servant treated me," his anger burned.

    20So Joseph's master took him and put him in the prison where the king's prisoners were held, and he remained there.

  • 17The steward did as Joseph said and brought the men to Joseph's house.

  • 19So they approached Joseph's steward and spoke to him at the entrance of the house.

  • 1Joseph could no longer hold back his emotions in front of everyone standing near him, so he called out, 'Have everyone leave my presence!' No one remained with him when Joseph revealed himself to his brothers.

    22The warden put Joseph in charge of all the prisoners, and he was responsible for whatever happened there.

    23The warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph's care, because the LORD was with him and gave him success in whatever he did.
