Verse 1

Hear the word that the Lord has spoken to you, O house of Israel.

Hear ye the word which the LORD speaketh unto you, O house of Israel:

Verse 2

This is what the Lord says: Do not learn the ways of the nations or be terrified by the signs in the sky, even though the nations are terrified by them.

Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.

Verse 3

For the customs of the nations are worthless. They cut down a tree from the forest; it is shaped by the hands of a craftsman with a chisel.

For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe.

Verse 4

They adorn it with silver and gold; they fasten it with nails and hammers so it will not totter.

They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.

Verse 5

They are like scarecrows in a cucumber field; they cannot speak. They must be carried because they cannot walk. Do not fear them, for they can do no harm—nor can they do any good.

They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good.

Verse 6

There is no one like You, Lord. You are great, and Your name is mighty in power.

Forasmuch as there is none like unto thee, O LORD; thou art great, and thy name is great in might.

Verse 7

Who should not fear You, King of the nations? This is Your due. Among all the wise ones of the nations and in all their kingdoms, there is no one like You.

Who would not fear thee, O King of nations? for to thee doth it appertain: forasmuch as among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their kingdoms, there is none like unto thee.

Verse 8

They are all senseless and foolish; their instruction comes from worthless idols.

But they are altogether brutish and foolish: the stock is a doctrine of vanities.

Verse 9

Hammered silver is brought from Tarshish and gold from Uphaz—the work of the craftsman and of the goldsmith. Their clothing is blue and purple, all made by skilled workers.

Silver spread into plates is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz, the work of the workman, and of the hands of the founder: blue and purple is their clothing: they are all the work of cunning men.

Verse 10

But the Lord is the true God; He is the living God, the eternal King. When He is angry, the earth trembles; the nations cannot endure His wrath.

But the LORD is the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting king: at his wrath the earth shall tremble, and the nations shall not be able to abide his indignation.

Verse 11

Tell them this: 'The gods who did not make the heavens and the earth will perish from the earth and from under the heavens.'

Thus shall ye say unto them, The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, even they shall perish from the earth, and from under these heavens.

Verse 12

God made the earth by His power; He established the world by His wisdom and stretched out the heavens by His understanding.

He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heavens by his discretion.

Verse 13

At the sound of His thunder, water roars in the heavens. He causes clouds to rise from the ends of the earth. He makes lightning for the rain and brings wind out of His storehouses.

When he uttereth his voice, there is a multitude of waters in the heavens, and he causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings with rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of his treasures.

Verse 14

Everyone is senseless and without knowledge; every goldsmith is shamed by their idols. The images he makes are a fraud; they have no breath in them.

Every man is brutish in his knowledge: every founder is confounded by the graven image: for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them.

Verse 15

They are worthless, a work of mockery; at the time of their punishment, they will perish.

They are vanity, and the work of errors: in the time of their visitation they shall perish.

Verse 16

The portion of Jacob is not like these, for He is the Maker of all things, and Israel is the tribe of His inheritance—the Lord Almighty is His name.

The portion of Jacob is not like them: for he is the former of all things; and Israel is the rod of his inheritance: The LORD of hosts is his name.

Verse 17

Gather up your belongings from the land, you who live under siege.

Gather up thy wares out of the land, O inhabitant of the fortress.

Verse 18

For this is what the Lord says: 'I am about to sling out the inhabitants of the land at this time and bring distress on them so that they may be found.'

For thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will sling out the inhabitants of the land at this once, and will distress them, that they may find it so.

Verse 19

Woe to me because of my brokenness! My wound is incurable. Yet I said, 'This is my suffering, and I must endure it.'

Woe is me for my hurt! my wound is grievous: but I said, Truly this is a grief, and I must bear it.

Verse 20

My tent is destroyed, and all its ropes are broken. My children have left me—they are no more. There is no one to pitch my tent or set up my curtains.

My tabernacle is spoiled, and all my cords are broken: my children are gone forth of me, and they are not: there is none to stretch forth my tent any more, and to set up my curtains.

Verse 21

The shepherds are senseless and do not seek the Lord; therefore they do not prosper, and all their flock is scattered.

For the pastors are become brutish, and have not sought the LORD: therefore they shall not prosper, and all their flocks shall be scattered.

Verse 22

Listen! The sound of a report is coming—a great commotion from the northern land to make the cities of Judah desolate, a dwelling place for jackals.

Behold, the noise of the bruit is come, and a great commotion out of the north country, to make the cities of Judah desolate, and a den of dragons.

Verse 23

I know, Lord, that a person's way is not their own; it is not for them to direct their steps.

O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps.

Verse 24

Discipline me, Lord, but only in due measure—not in Your anger, or You will reduce me to nothing.

O LORD, correct me, but with judgment; not in thine anger, lest thou bring me to nothing.

Verse 25

Pour out Your wrath on the nations that do not acknowledge You and on the families that do not call on Your name. For they have devoured Jacob; they have consumed him, destroyed him, and ruined his homeland.

Pour out thy fury upon the heathen that know thee not, and upon the families that call not on thy name: for they have eaten up Jacob, and devoured him, and consumed him, and have made his habitation desolate.
