Verse 1

At the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying:

In the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah came this word unto Jeremiah from the LORD, saying,

Verse 2

This is what the LORD instructed me: "Make for yourself chains and yokes, and place them on your neck.

Thus saith the LORD to me; Make thee bonds and yokes, and put them upon thy neck,

Verse 3

Then send them to the kings of Edom, Moab, the Ammonites, Tyre, and Sidon through the envoys who have come to Jerusalem to King Zedekiah of Judah.

And send them to the king of Edom, and to the king of Moab, and to the king of the Ammonites, and to the king of Tyrus, and to the king of Zidon, by the hand of the messengers which come to Jerusalem unto Zedekiah king of Judah;

Verse 4

Give them this command for their masters: ‘This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: This is what you are to say to your masters:

And command them to say unto their masters, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Thus shall ye say unto your masters;

Verse 5

By my great power and outstretched arm, I made the earth, the people, and the animals that are on it. I give it to anyone I choose.

I have made the earth, the man and the beast that are upon the ground, by my great power and by my outstretched arm, and have given it unto whom it seemed meet unto me.

Verse 6

Now I have handed over all these lands to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, my servant. I have even given him the wild animals to serve him.

And now have I given all these lands into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, my servant; and the beasts of the field have I given him also to serve him.

Verse 7

All nations will serve him, his son, and his grandson until the time for his own land comes. Then many nations and great kings will make him their slave.

And all nations shall serve him, and his son, and his son's son, until the very time of his land come: and then many nations and great kings shall serve themselves of him.

Verse 8

But any nation or kingdom that will not serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon or place its neck under his yoke—I will punish that nation with sword, famine, and plague, declares the LORD, until I destroy it by his hand.

And it shall come to pass, that the nation and kingdom which will not serve the same Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, and that will not put their neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon, that nation will I punish, saith the LORD, with the sword, and with the famine, and with the pestilence, until I have consumed them by his hand.

Verse 9

So do not listen to your prophets, diviners, dreamers, soothsayers, or sorcerers who say to you, ‘You will not serve the king of Babylon.’

Therefore hearken not ye to your prophets, nor to your diviners, nor to your dreamers, nor to your enchanters, nor to your sorcerers, which speak unto you, saying, Ye shall not serve the king of Babylon:

Verse 10

They are prophesying lies to you, and the result will be that I will drive you far from your land, and you will perish.

For they prophesy a lie unto you, to remove you far from your land; and that I should drive you out, and ye should perish.

Verse 11

But the nation that willingly brings its neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon and serves him, I will let dwell on its land, declares the LORD, to work it and live on it.

But the nations that bring their neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon, and serve him, those will I let remain still in their own land, saith the LORD; and they shall till it, and dwell therein.

Verse 12

I spoke to Zedekiah king of Judah with the same message, saying, "Bring your necks under the yoke of the king of Babylon; serve him and his people, and you will live.

I spake also to Zedekiah king of Judah according to all these words, saying, Bring your necks under the yoke of the king of Babylon, and serve him and his people, and live.

Verse 13

Why should you and your people die by the sword, famine, and plague, as the LORD has spoken regarding any nation that does not serve the king of Babylon?

Why will ye die, thou and thy people, by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence, as the LORD hath spoken against the nation that will not serve the king of Babylon?

Verse 14

Do not listen to the words of the prophets who say to you, ‘You will not serve the king of Babylon,’ for they are prophesying lies to you.

Therefore hearken not unto the words of the prophets that speak unto you, saying, Ye shall not serve the king of Babylon: for they prophesy a lie unto you.

Verse 15

For I have not sent them, declares the LORD, yet they prophesy lies in my name, so that I might drive you out, and you will perish—you and the prophets who are prophesying to you.

For I have not sent them, saith the LORD, yet they prophesy a lie in my name; that I might drive you out, and that ye might perish, ye, and the prophets that prophesy unto you.

Verse 16

Then I said to the priests and all this people: This is what the LORD says: Do not listen to the words of your prophets who are prophesying to you, saying, ‘The articles of the LORD’s house will soon be returned from Babylon.’ They are prophesying lies to you.

Also I spake to the priests and to all this people, saying, Thus saith the LORD; Hearken not to the words of your prophets that prophesy unto you, saying, Behold, the vessels of the LORD'S house shall now shortly be brought again from Babylon: for they prophesy a lie unto you.

Verse 17

Do not listen to them. Instead, serve the king of Babylon and live. Why should this city become a ruin?

Hearken not unto them; serve the king of Babylon, and live: wherefore should this city be laid waste?

Verse 18

If they are indeed prophets and if the word of the LORD is with them, let them pray earnestly to the LORD of Hosts that the articles remaining in the house of the LORD, in the palace of the king of Judah, and in Jerusalem will not be taken to Babylon.

But if they be prophets, and if the word of the LORD be with them, let them now make intercession to the LORD of hosts, that the vessels which are left in the house of the LORD, and in the house of the king of Judah, and at Jerusalem, go not to Babylon.

Verse 19

For this is what the LORD of Hosts says concerning the pillars, the bronze sea, the stands, and the rest of the articles that remain in this city,

For thus saith the LORD of hosts concerning the pillars, and concerning the sea, and concerning the bases, and concerning the residue of the vessels that remain in this city,

Verse 20

which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon did not take when he carried Jeconiah son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon, along with all the nobles of Judah and Jerusalem.

Which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon took not, when he carried away captive Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim king of Judah from Jerusalem to Babylon, and all the nobles of Judah and Jerusalem;

Verse 21

Yes, this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says about the articles that remain in the house of the LORD, in the palace of the king of Judah, and in Jerusalem:

Yea, thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, concerning the vessels that remain in the house of the LORD, and in the house of the king of Judah and of Jerusalem;

Verse 22

‘They will be taken to Babylon and will remain there until the day I attend to them, declares the LORD. Then I will bring them back and restore them to this place.’

They shall be carried to Babylon, and there shall they be until the day that I visit them, saith the LORD; then will I bring them up, and restore them to this place.
