Verse 1

This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD in the tenth year of Zedekiah, king of Judah, which was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar.

The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD in the tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, which was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadrezzar.

Verse 2

At that time, the army of the king of Babylon was besieging Jerusalem, and Jeremiah the prophet was confined in the courtyard of the guard located in the palace of the king of Judah.

For then the king of Babylon's army besieged Jerusalem: and Jeremiah the prophet was shut up in the court of the prison, which was in the king of Judah's house.

Verse 3

King Zedekiah of Judah had imprisoned him there, saying, "Why are you prophesying and declaring, 'This is what the LORD says: I am about to give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will capture it.'

For Zedekiah king of Judah had shut him up, saying, Wherefore dost thou prophesy, and say, Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall take it;

Verse 4

Zedekiah, king of Judah, will not escape from the hands of the Chaldeans. He will certainly be handed over to the king of Babylon; they will speak face to face and see each other directly.

And Zedekiah king of Judah shall not escape out of the hand of the Chaldeans, but shall surely be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon, and shall speak with him mouth to mouth, and his eyes shall behold his eyes;

Verse 5

He will take Zedekiah to Babylon, where he will stay until I deal with him, declares the LORD. If you fight against the Chaldeans, you will not succeed.

And he shall lead Zedekiah to Babylon, and there shall he be until I visit him, saith the LORD: though ye fight with the Chaldeans, ye shall not prosper.

Verse 6

Jeremiah said, "The word of the LORD came to me, saying:

And Jeremiah said, The word of the LORD came unto me, saying,

Verse 7

'Behold, Hanamel, the son of your uncle Shallum, is coming to you to say, Buy my field at Anathoth, for you have the right of redemption to purchase it.'

Behold, Hanameel the son of Shallum thine uncle shall come unto thee, saying, Buy thee my field that is in Anathoth: for the right of redemption is thine to buy it.

Verse 8

Then Hanamel, my cousin, came to me in the courtyard of the guard, just as the LORD had said. He told me, 'Please buy my field at Anathoth, in the territory of Benjamin, because it is your right to redeem it and take possession of it.' At that point, I knew this was indeed the word of the LORD.

So Hanameel mine uncle's son came to me in the court of the prison according to the word of the LORD, and said unto me, Buy my field, I pray thee, that is in Anathoth, which is in the country of Benjamin: for the right of inheritance is thine, and the redemption is thine; buy it for thyself. Then I knew that this was the word of the LORD.

Verse 9

So I bought the field at Anathoth from my cousin Hanamel and weighed out the payment for him—seventeen shekels of silver.

And I bought the field of Hanameel my uncle's son, that was in Anathoth, and weighed him the money, even seventeen shekels of silver.

Verse 10

I signed and sealed the deed, called in witnesses, and weighed out the silver on a scale.

And I subscribed the evidence, and sealed it, and took witnesses, and weighed him the money in the balances.

Verse 11

I took the deed of purchase, both the sealed copy containing the terms and conditions, and the open copy.

So I took the evidence of the purchase, both that which was sealed according to the law and custom, and that which was open:

Verse 12

Then I gave the deed of purchase to Baruch, son of Neriah, son of Mahseiah, in the presence of my cousin Hanamel, the witnesses who signed the deed, and all the Jews who were sitting in the courtyard of the guard.

And I gave the evidence of the purchase unto Baruch the son of Neriah, the son of Maaseiah, in the sight of Hanameel mine uncle's son, and in the presence of the witnesses that subscribed the book of the purchase, before all the Jews that sat in the court of the prison.

Verse 13

In their presence, I gave Baruch the following instructions:

And I charged Baruch before them, saying,

Verse 14

This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: Take these deeds—both the sealed copy of the purchase deed and the open copy—and put them in a clay jar so they will last a long time.

Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Take these evidences, this evidence of the purchase, both which is sealed, and this evidence which is open; and put them in an earthen vessel, that they may continue many days.

Verse 15

For this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: Houses, fields, and vineyards will again be bought in this land.

For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Houses and fields and vineyards shall be possessed again in this land.

Verse 16

After I gave the deed of purchase to Baruch son of Neriah, I prayed to the LORD:

Now when I had delivered the evidence of the purchase unto Baruch the son of Neriah, I prayed unto the LORD, saying,

Verse 17

Ah, Lord GOD! You made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too difficult for You!

Ah Lord GOD! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee:

Verse 18

You show steadfast love to thousands, but You repay the iniquity of the fathers into the laps of their children after them. You are the great and mighty God, whose name is the LORD of Hosts.

Thou shewest lovingkindness unto thousands, and recompensest the iniquity of the fathers into the bosom of their children after them: the Great, the Mighty God, the LORD of hosts, is his name,

Verse 19

You are great in counsel and mighty in deeds. Your eyes are open to all the ways of the sons of men, rewarding each person according to their ways and the fruit of their deeds.

Great in counsel, and mighty in work: for thine eyes are open upon all the ways of the sons of men: to give every one according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings:

Verse 20

You performed signs and wonders in the land of Egypt and continue to this day, both in Israel and among all mankind. You have made a name for Yourself that remains to this day.

Which hast set signs and wonders in the land of Egypt, even unto this day, and in Israel, and among other men; and hast made thee a name, as at this day;

Verse 21

You brought Your people Israel out of the land of Egypt with signs, wonders, a strong hand, an outstretched arm, and great terror.

And hast brought forth thy people Israel out of the land of Egypt with signs, and with wonders, and with a strong hand, and with a stretched out arm, and with great terror;

Verse 22

You gave them this land You swore to give to their ancestors, a land flowing with milk and honey.

And hast given them this land, which thou didst swear to their fathers to give them, a land flowing with milk and honey;

Verse 23

They came in and took possession of it, but they did not obey Your voice or walk in Your law. They did not do what You commanded them to do, so You brought upon them all this disaster.

And they came in, and possessed it; but they obeyed not thy voice, neither walked in thy law; they have done nothing of all that thou commandedst them to do: therefore thou hast caused all this evil to come upon them:

Verse 24

Look! Siege ramps have arrived to take the city, and it is handed over to the Chaldeans who are fighting against it because of the sword, the famine, and the plague. What You have spoken has come to pass, and You see it happening.

Behold the mounts, they are come unto the city to take it; and the city is given into the hand of the Chaldeans, that fight against it, because of the sword, and of the famine, and of the pestilence: and what thou hast spoken is come to pass; and, behold, thou seest it.

Verse 25

Yet You, O Lord GOD, said to me, 'Buy the field with silver and call witnesses,' even though the city is handed over to the Chaldeans.

And thou hast said unto me, O Lord GOD, Buy thee the field for money, and take witnesses; for the city is given into the hand of the Chaldeans.

Verse 26

The word of the LORD came to Jeremiah, saying:

Then came the word of the LORD unto Jeremiah, saying,

Verse 27

'Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all mankind. Is anything too difficult for Me?'

Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me?

Verse 28

Therefore, this is what the LORD says: 'I am about to give this city into the hands of the Chaldeans, into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and he will capture it.'

Therefore thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the Chaldeans, and into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and he shall take it:

Verse 29

The Chaldeans who are fighting against the city will enter it, set it on fire, and burn it along with the houses where incense was offered to Baal on their rooftops and drink offerings were poured out to other gods, provoking Me to anger.

And the Chaldeans, that fight against this city, shall come and set fire on this city, and burn it with the houses, upon whose roofs they have offered incense unto Baal, and poured out drink offerings unto other gods, to provoke me to anger.

Verse 30

For the sons of Israel and the sons of Judah have only done what is evil in My eyes since their youth. Indeed, the sons of Israel have only provoked Me to anger by the work of their hands, declares the LORD.

For the children of Israel and the children of Judah have only done evil before me from their youth: for the children of Israel have only provoked me to anger with the work of their hands, saith the LORD.

Verse 31

From the day it was built until now, this city has caused My anger and My wrath so great that I must remove it from My presence.

For this city hath been to me as a provocation of mine anger and of my fury from the day that they built it even unto this day; that I should remove it from before my face,

Verse 32

It is because of all the evil that the sons of Israel and the sons of Judah have done to provoke Me to anger. Their kings, princes, priests, prophets, the men of Judah, and the residents of Jerusalem have all been guilty.

Because of all the evil of the children of Israel and of the children of Judah, which they have done to provoke me to anger, they, their kings, their princes, their priests, and their prophets, and the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

Verse 33

They have turned their backs to Me and not their faces. Though I taught them persistently, they refused to listen or accept correction.

And they have turned unto me the back, and not the face: though I taught them, rising up early and teaching them, yet they have not hearkened to receive instruction.

Verse 34

They set up detestable idols in the house that bears My name and defiled it.

But they set their abominations in the house, which is called by my name, to defile it.

Verse 35

They built high places for Baal in the Valley of Hinnom’s Son to sacrifice their sons and daughters to Molech, something I never commanded nor even considered in My heart. They committed this detestable act to make Judah sin.

And they built the high places of Baal, which are in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to cause their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire unto Molech; which I commanded them not, neither came it into my mind, that they should do this abomination, to cause Judah to sin.

Verse 36

Now therefore, this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says concerning this city about which you are saying, 'It has been handed over to the king of Babylon through sword, famine, and plague':

And now therefore thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel, concerning this city, whereof ye say, It shall be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence;

Verse 37

Behold, I will gather them from all the lands where I banished them in My anger, wrath, and great displeasure. I will bring them back to this place and let them live in safety.

Behold, I will gather them out of all countries, whither I have driven them in mine anger, and in my fury, and in great wrath; and I will bring them again unto this place, and I will cause them to dwell safely:

Verse 38

They will be My people, and I will be their God.

And they shall be my people, and I will be their God:

Verse 39

I will give them one heart and one way so that they may always fear Me, for their own good and the good of their children after them.

And I will give them one heart, and one way, that they may fear me for ever, for the good of them, and of their children after them:

Verse 40

I will make with them an everlasting covenant; I will never turn away from doing good to them. I will put the fear of Me in their hearts so that they will not turn away from Me.

And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; but I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me.

Verse 41

I will rejoice in doing them good, and I will plant them in this land with all My heart and soul.

Yea, I will rejoice over them to do them good, and I will plant them in this land assuredly with my whole heart and with my whole soul.

Verse 42

This is what the LORD says: Just as I have brought all this great disaster upon this people, so I will bring upon them all the good that I have promised them.

For thus saith the LORD; Like as I have brought all this great evil upon this people, so will I bring upon them all the good that I have promised them.

Verse 43

Fields will once again be purchased in this land about which you are saying, 'It is a desolate place without man or beast; it has been handed over to the Chaldeans.'

And fields shall be bought in this land, whereof ye say, It is desolate without man or beast; it is given into the hand of the Chaldeans.

Verse 44

Fields will be bought with silver, deeds signed, sealed, and witnessed in the land of Benjamin and in the areas surrounding Jerusalem, in the towns of Judah, the hill country, the foothills, and the Negev—because I will restore their fortunes, declares the LORD.

Men shall buy fields for money, and subscribe evidences, and seal them, and take witnesses in the land of Benjamin, and in the places about Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, and in the cities of the mountains, and in the cities of the valley, and in the cities of the south: for I will cause their captivity to return, saith the LORD.
