Verse 1

This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says concerning Moab: Woe to Nebo, for it is devastated! Kiriathaim is disgraced and captured; the mighty stronghold is humbled and shattered.

Against Moab thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Woe unto Nebo! for it is spoiled: Kiriathaim is confounded and taken: Misgab is confounded and dismayed.

Verse 2

The glory of Moab is no more! In Heshbon, a plan for disaster was made against her: 'Come, let us cut her off from being a nation!' Even Madmen will be silenced; the sword will follow you.

There shall be no more praise of Moab: in Heshbon they have devised evil against it; come, and let us cut it off from being a nation. Also thou shalt be cut down, O Madmen; the sword shall pursue thee.

Verse 3

A cry of distress comes from Horonaim: great destruction and devastation!

Verse 5

For at the ascent of Luhith, weeping goes with the steps; as they descend to Horonaim, cries of destruction are heard from the enemy.

For in the going up of Luhith continual weeping shall go up; for in the going down of Horonaim the enemies have heard a cry of destruction.

Flee! Save your lives like a juniper in the wilderness.

Flee, save your lives, and be like the heath in the wilderness.

Verse 7

Because you trusted in your works and your treasures, you too will be captured! Chemosh will go into exile with his priests and officials together.

For because thou hast trusted in thy works and in thy treasures, thou shalt also be taken: and Chemosh shall go forth into captivity with his priests and his princes together.

Verse 8

The destroyer will come to every city, and no city will escape. The valley will perish, and the plateau will be destroyed, for the LORD has spoken.

And the spoiler shall come upon every city, and no city shall escape: the valley also shall perish, and the plain shall be destroyed, as the LORD hath spoken.

Verse 9

Give Moab wings so she may fly away, for her cities will become desolate, with no one living in them.

Give wings unto Moab, that it may flee and get away: for the cities thereof shall be desolate, without any to dwell therein.

Verse 10

Cursed is the one who does the LORD's work negligently, and cursed is the one who withholds their sword from blood.

Cursed be he that doeth the work of the LORD deceitfully, and cursed be he that keepeth back his sword from blood.

Verse 11

Moab has been at ease from her youth, settled on her dregs, not poured from vessel to vessel, nor gone into exile. Therefore her taste remains, and her aroma is unchanged.

Moab hath been at ease from his youth, and he hath settled on his lees, and hath not been emptied from vessel to vessel, neither hath he gone into captivity: therefore his taste remained in him, and his scent is not changed.

Verse 12

Therefore, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will send those who pour out wine to tip her over; they will empty her vessels and shatter her jars.

Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will send unto him wanderers, that shall cause him to wander, and shall empty his vessels, and break their bottles.

Verse 13

Then Moab will be ashamed of Chemosh, just as the house of Israel was ashamed of Bethel, their confidence.

And Moab shall be ashamed of Chemosh, as the house of Israel was ashamed of Bethel their confidence.

How can you say, 'We are warriors, men mighty in battle'?

How say ye, We are mighty and strong men for the war?

Verse 15

Moab is devastated, and its towns have been destroyed! The best of its young men have gone down to slaughter, declares the King, whose name is the LORD of Hosts.

Moab is spoiled, and gone up out of her cities, and his chosen young men are gone down to the slaughter, saith the King, whose name is the LORD of hosts.

Verse 16

The calamity of Moab is near at hand, and her disaster is rushing swiftly.

The calamity of Moab is near to come, and his affliction hasteth fast.

Verse 17

Mourn for her, all you who surround her, and all who know her name; say, 'How the mighty rod of strength and the glorious staff is broken!'

All ye that are about him, bemoan him; and all ye that know his name, say, How is the strong staff broken, and the beautiful rod!

Verse 18

Come down from your place of glory and sit in thirst, inhabitant daughter of Dibon, for the one who destroys Moab has attacked you, ruining your fortresses.

Verse 19

Stand by the road and watch, inhabitant of Aroer. Ask the man fleeing and the woman escaping, 'What has happened?'

O inhabitant of Aroer, stand by the way, and espy; ask him that fleeth, and her that escapeth, and say, What is done?

Verse 20

Moab is put to shame, for it is shattered. Wail and cry out! Proclaim at the Arnon that Moab is destroyed.

Moab is confounded; for it is broken down: howl and cry; tell ye it in Arnon, that Moab is spoiled,

Judgment has come to the land of the plain—to Holon, to Jahaz, and to Mephaath,

to Dibon, to Nebo, and to Beth-diblathaim,

And upon Dibon, and upon Nebo, and upon Bethdiblathaim,

Verse 23

to Kiriathaim, to Beth-gamul, and to Beth-meon,

And upon Kiriathaim, and upon Bethgamul, and upon Bethmeon,

Verse 24

to Kerioth, to Bozrah, and to all the cities of the land of Moab, far and near.

And upon Kerioth, and upon Bozrah, and upon all the cities of the land of Moab, far or near.

Verse 25

The horn of Moab is cut off, and her arm is broken, declares the LORD.

The horn of Moab is cut off, and his arm is broken, saith the LORD.

Verse 26

Make her drunk, for she has magnified herself against the LORD. Moab will wallow in her vomit and become an object of ridicule.

Make ye him drunken: for he magnified himself against the LORD: Moab also shall wallow in his vomit, and he also shall be in derision.

Verse 27

Was not Israel a laughingstock to you? Was he found among thieves, that whenever you speak of him you wag your head in scorn?

For was not Israel a derision unto thee? was he found among thieves? for since thou spakest of him, thou skippedst for joy.

Verse 28

Abandon your cities and dwell among the rocks, O inhabitants of Moab. Be like a dove that makes its nest in the sides of the cave's opening.

O ye that dwell in Moab, leave the cities, and dwell in the rock, and be like the dove that maketh her nest in the sides of the hole's mouth.

Verse 29

We have heard of Moab's pride—so very proud—his arrogance, pride, conceit, and the haughtiness of his heart.

We have heard the pride of Moab, (he is exceeding proud) his loftiness, and his arrogancy, and his pride, and the haughtiness of his heart.

I know his fury, declares the LORD, but it is empty; his boasts accomplish nothing.

I know his wrath, saith the LORD; but it shall not be so; his lies shall not so effect it.

Verse 31

Therefore, I will wail for Moab; I will cry out for all of Moab. For the men of Kir-heres, I will mourn.

Therefore will I howl for Moab, and I will cry out for all Moab; mine heart shall mourn for the men of Kirheres.

Verse 32

I will weep for you, vine of Sibmah, more than for Jazer. Your branches spread to the sea, reaching as far as Jazer. The destroyer has fallen upon your summer fruit and your grape harvest.

O vine of Sibmah, I will weep for thee with the weeping of Jazer: thy plants are gone over the sea, they reach even to the sea of Jazer: the spoiler is fallen upon thy summer fruits and upon thy vintage.

Verse 33

Joy and gladness have been taken from the fertile fields and the land of Moab. I have stopped the wine flowing from the presses; no one treads them with shouts of joy. There is no joyful shouting.

And joy and gladness is taken from the plentiful field, and from the land of Moab; and I have caused wine to fail from the winepresses: none shall tread with shouting; their shouting shall be no shouting.

Verse 34

The crying of Heshbon resounds to Elealeh and Jahaz, they have raised their voices from Zoar to Horonaim and Eglath-shelishiyah. Even the waters of Nimrim are dried up.

From the cry of Heshbon even unto Elealeh, and even unto Jahaz, have they uttered their voice, from Zoar even unto Horonaim, as an heifer of three years old: for the waters also of Nimrim shall be desolate.

Verse 35

I will put an end in Moab to the one who sacrifices on the high places and burns incense to his gods, declares the LORD.

Moreover I will cause to cease in Moab, saith the LORD, him that offereth in the high places, and him that burneth incense to his gods.

Verse 36

Therefore, my heart moans for Moab like the sound of flutes; it moans like flutes for the men of Kir-heres, because their accumulated wealth has perished.

Therefore mine heart shall sound for Moab like pipes, and mine heart shall sound like pipes for the men of Kirheres: because the riches that he hath gotten are perished.

Verse 37

Every head is shaved, every beard is cut off, gashes are on all their hands, and sackcloth is wrapped around their waists.

For every head shall be bald, and every beard clipped: upon all the hands shall be cuttings, and upon the loins sackcloth.

Verse 38

On every rooftop of Moab and in its public squares, there is nothing but lamentation. For I have broken Moab like a jar no one wants, declares the LORD.

There shall be lamentation generally upon all the housetops of Moab, and in the streets thereof: for I have broken Moab like a vessel wherein is no pleasure, saith the LORD.

Verse 39

How shattered Moab is! Cry out! How Moab has turned his back in shame. So Moab will become a ridicule and a horror to all his neighbors.

They shall howl, saying, How is it broken down! how hath Moab turned the back with shame! so shall Moab be a derision and a dismaying to all them about him.

Verse 40

For this is what the LORD says: Behold, one will fly swiftly like an eagle and spread his wings against Moab.

For thus saith the LORD; Behold, he shall fly as an eagle, and shall spread his wings over Moab.

Verse 41

The cities are captured, and the strongholds are seized. On that day, the heart of Moab's warriors will be like the heart of a woman in labor.

Fear, and the pit, and the snare, shall be upon thee, O inhabitant of Moab, saith the LORD.

Verse 44

The one who flees from the terror will fall into the pit, and the one climbing out of the pit will be caught in the snare. For I will bring on Moab the year of their punishment, declares the LORD.

He that fleeth from the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that getteth up out of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for I will bring upon it, even upon Moab, the year of their visitation, saith the LORD.

Verse 45

In the shadow of Heshbon, the fugitives stand helpless, for a fire has gone out from Heshbon, and a flame from Sihon. It devours the corner of Moab and the crown of the noisy boasters.

They that fled stood under the shadow of Heshbon because of the force: but a fire shall come forth out of Heshbon, and a flame from the midst of Sihon, and shall devour the corner of Moab, and the crown of the head of the tumultuous ones.

Verse 46

Woe to you, Moab! The people of Chemosh are destroyed. Your sons have been taken into exile, and your daughters into captivity.

Woe be unto thee, O Moab! the people of Chemosh perisheth: for thy sons are taken captives, and thy daughters captives.
