1 I have told you these things so that you will not fall away.

These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended.

2 They will ban you from the synagogue. But the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God.

They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.

3 They will do these things because they have not known the Father or me.

And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me.

4 I have told you these things so that when the time comes, you will remember that I told you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you.

But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you.

5 But now I am going to the one who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’

But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou?

6 Instead, because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts.

But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart.

7 But I tell you the truth: It is for your benefit that I am going away. If I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.

Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

8 When he comes, he will convict the world about sin, righteousness, and judgment:

And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

9 about sin, because they do not believe in me;

Of sin, because they believe not on me;

10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see me;

Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;

11 and about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.

Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.

12 I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.

I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.

13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you what is to come.

Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

14 He will glorify me because he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

15 Everything that the Father has is mine. This is why I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

16 A little while, and you will no longer see me; and again a little while, and you will see me, because I am going to the Father.

A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father.

17 Then some of his disciples said to one another, 'What does he mean by saying, “A little while and you will no longer see me; and again a little while and you will see me,” and “because I am going to the Father”?'

Then said some of his disciples among themselves, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father?

18 They said, 'What does he mean by “a little while”? We do not know what he is talking about.'

They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? we cannot tell what he saith.

19 Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, 'Are you discussing among yourselves what I meant when I said, “A little while and you will no longer see me; and again a little while and you will see me”?'

Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask him, and said unto them, Do ye enquire among yourselves of that I said, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me?

20 Truly, truly, I tell you, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.

21 When a woman is in labor, she has sorrow because her time has come. But when she has given birth to the child, she no longer remembers the suffering because of the joy that a human being has been born into the world.

A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.

22 So you also have sorrow now. But I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.

And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.

23 On that day you will ask me nothing. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in my name, he will give you.

And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.

24 Until now you have asked for nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, so that your joy may be full.

Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.

25 I have spoken these things to you in figures of speech. An hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures, but will tell you plainly about the Father.

These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly of the Father.

26 On that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf,

At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you:

27 for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.

For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God.

28 I came from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I am leaving the world and going to the Father.

I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father.

29 His disciples said to him, 'See, now you are speaking plainly and not using any figure of speech.'

His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no proverb.

30 'Now we know that you know all things and do not need anyone to question you. This is why we believe that you came from God.'

Now are we sure that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God.

31 Jesus answered them, 'Do you now believe?'

Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe?

32 'Look, the hour is coming—in fact, it has already arrived—when you will be scattered, each to your own home, and you will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.'

Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.

33 'I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have trouble. But take courage! I have overcome the world.'

These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
