Verse 1

When Jabin, king of Hazor, heard about this, he sent word to Jobab, king of Madon, and to the kings of Shimron and Achshaph.

And it came to pass, when Jabin king of Hazor had heard those things, that he sent to Jobab king of Madon, and to the king of Shimron, and to the king of Achshaph,

Verse 2

He also sent to the kings who were in the northern hill country, in the Arabah plain south of Kinneroth, in the lowland, and in the heights of Dor near the sea.

And to the kings that were on the north of the mountains, and of the plains south of Chinneroth, and in the valley, and in the borders of Dor on the west,

Verse 3

These included the Canaanites in the east and west, the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, and Jebusites in the hill country, and the Hivites under Mount Hermon in the land of Mizpah.

And to the Canaanite on the east and on the west, and to the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Jebusite in the mountains, and to the Hivite under Hermon in the land of Mizpeh.

Verse 4

They came out with all their armies, a vast number of people as numerous as the sand on the seashore, along with a large number of horses and chariots.

And they went out, they and all their hosts with them, much people, even as the sand that is upon the sea shore in multitude, with horses and chariots very many.

Verse 5

All these kings joined forces and came together to camp at the waters of Merom to fight against Israel.

And when all these kings were met together, they came and pitched together at the waters of Merom, to fight against Israel.

Verse 6

The LORD said to Joshua, 'Do not be afraid of them, for by this time tomorrow I will deliver all of them slain before Israel. You are to hamstring their horses and burn their chariots in the fire.'

And the LORD said unto Joshua, Be not afraid because of them: for to morrow about this time will I deliver them up all slain before Israel: thou shalt hough their horses, and burn their chariots with fire.

Verse 7

So Joshua and all his warriors came against them suddenly at the waters of Merom and attacked them.

So Joshua came, and all the people of war with him, against them by the waters of Merom suddenly; and they fell upon them.

Verse 8

The LORD gave them into the hand of Israel, who struck them down and pursued them as far as Greater Sidon, Misrephoth Maim, and the valley of Mizpeh to the east. They struck them down until no survivors remained.

And the LORD delivered them into the hand of Israel, who smote them, and chased them unto great Zidon, and unto Misrephothmaim, and unto the valley of Mizpeh eastward; and they smote them, until they left them none remaining.

Verse 9

Joshua did to them as the LORD had instructed: he hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots in the fire.

And Joshua did unto them as the LORD bade him: he houghed their horses, and burnt their chariots with fire.

Verse 10

At that time, Joshua turned back and captured Hazor, striking its king with the sword. Hazor had formerly been the head of all these kingdoms.

And Joshua at that time turned back, and took Hazor, and smote the king thereof with the sword: for Hazor beforetime was the head of all those kingdoms.

Verse 11

They struck down everyone in the city with the sword, completely destroying them. Not a single living thing was left, and Joshua burned Hazor with fire.

And they smote all the souls that were therein with the edge of the sword, utterly destroying them: there was not any left to breathe: and he burnt Hazor with fire.

Verse 12

Joshua captured all the cities of these kings and their kings as well. He struck them down with the sword and completely destroyed them, as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded.

And all the cities of those kings, and all the kings of them, did Joshua take, and smote them with the edge of the sword, and he utterly destroyed them, as Moses the servant of the LORD commanded.

Verse 13

However, Israel did not burn any of the cities built on their mounds, except for Hazor, which Joshua burned.

But as for the cities that stood still in their strength, Israel burned none of them, save Hazor only; that did Joshua burn.

Verse 14

The Israelites took all the plunder and livestock of these cities for themselves, but they killed all the people with the sword, completely destroying them and leaving no survivors.

And all the spoil of these cities, and the cattle, the children of Israel took for a prey unto themselves; but every man they smote with the edge of the sword, until they had destroyed them, neither left they any to breathe.

Verse 15

As the LORD had commanded his servant Moses, so Moses commanded Joshua, and Joshua did as instructed. He left nothing undone from all that the LORD had commanded Moses.

As the LORD commanded Moses his servant, so did Moses command Joshua, and so did Joshua; he left nothing undone of all that the LORD commanded Moses.

Verse 16

So Joshua took all this land: the hill country, all the Negev, all the land of Goshen, the lowlands, the Arabah, and the hill country and lowlands of Israel.

So Joshua took all that land, the hills, and all the south country, and all the land of Goshen, and the valley, and the plain, and the mountain of Israel, and the valley of the same;

Verse 17

He captured the area from Mount Halak, which rises towards Seir, to Baal Gad in the valley of Lebanon below Mount Hermon. He captured all their kings, struck them down, and put them to death.

Even from the mount Halak, that goeth up to Seir, even unto Baalgad in the valley of Lebanon under mount Hermon: and all their kings he took, and smote them, and slew them.

Verse 18

Joshua waged war against all these kings for a long time.

Joshua made war a long time with all those kings.

Verse 19

No city made peace with the Israelites except the Hivites living in Gibeon. All others were taken in battle.

There was not a city that made peace with the children of Israel, save the Hivites the inhabitants of Gibeon: all other they took in battle.

Verse 20

For it was the LORD's purpose to harden their hearts to engage in battle with Israel, so that they would be utterly destroyed, receiving no mercy, as the LORD had commanded Moses.

For it was of the LORD to harden their hearts, that they should come against Israel in battle, that he might destroy them utterly, and that they might have no favour, but that he might destroy them, as the LORD commanded Moses.

Verse 21

At that time Joshua came and destroyed the Anakim from the hill country, from Hebron, Debir, Anab, all the hill country of Judah, and all the hill country of Israel. Joshua devoted them and their cities to destruction.

And at that time came Joshua, and cut off the Anakims from the mountains, from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, and from all the mountains of Judah, and from all the mountains of Israel: Joshua destroyed them utterly with their cities.

Verse 22

No Anakim were left in the land of the Israelites. Only in Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod did any remain.

There was none of the Anakims left in the land of the children of Israel: only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod, there remained.

Verse 23

So Joshua took the entire land, just as the LORD had promised to Moses, and gave it as an inheritance to Israel according to their tribal divisions. And the land had rest from war.

So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the LORD said unto Moses; and Joshua gave it for an inheritance unto Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. And the land rested from war.
