Verse 1

Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,

And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,

Verse 2

where for forty days He was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when they were over, He was hungry.

Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered.

Verse 3

The devil said to Him, 'If You are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.'

And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread.

Verse 4

But Jesus answered him, 'It is written: Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.'

And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.

Verse 5

Then the devil led Him up to a high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in an instant.

And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.

Verse 6

And he said to Him, 'I will give You all this authority and their glory; for it has been handed over to me, and I give it to whom I will.'

And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.

Verse 7

'Therefore if You will worship before me, it will all be Yours.'

If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine.

Verse 8

But Jesus answered and said to him, 'Get behind Me, Satan! For it is written: You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only shall you serve.'

And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

Verse 9

Then he brought Him to Jerusalem, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, 'If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here.'

And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence:

Verse 10

'For it is written: He will command His angels concerning You, to guard You,'

For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee:

Verse 11

'and they will lift You up in their hands so that You will not strike Your foot against a stone.'

And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.

Verse 12

Jesus answered him, 'It is said: You shall not test the Lord your God.'

And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

Verse 13

When the devil had finished all this testing, he left Him until an opportune time.

And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season.

Verse 14

Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and news about Him spread throughout the whole countryside.

And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about.

Verse 15

He was teaching in their synagogues, being praised by everyone.

And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all.

Verse 16

He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. As was His custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath day and stood up to read.

And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.

Verse 17

The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. Unrolling it, He found the place where it was written:

And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,

Verse 18

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free,

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,

Verse 19

to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.

To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

Verse 20

Then He rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. All the eyes in the synagogue were fixed on Him.

And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.

Verse 21

He began by saying to them, 'Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.'

And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.

Verse 22

Everyone spoke well of Him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from His lips. They said, 'Isn’t this Joseph’s son?'

And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph's son?

Verse 23

Jesus said to them, 'Surely you will quote this proverb to me: “Physician, heal yourself!” and say, “Do here in your hometown what we have heard that you did in Capernaum.”'

And he said unto them, Ye will surely say unto me this proverb, Physician, heal thyself: whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country.

Verse 24

Truly I tell you,' He continued, 'no prophet is accepted in his hometown.'

And he said, Verily I say unto you, No prophet is accepted in his own country.

Verse 25

But I tell you the truth, there were many widows in Israel in Elijah's time, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and there was a severe famine throughout the land.

But I tell you of a truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land;

Verse 26

Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon.

But unto none of them was Elias sent, save unto Sarepta, a city of Sidon, unto a woman that was a widow.

Verse 27

And there were many in Israel with leprosy in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet not one of them was cleansed—only Naaman the Syrian.'

And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, saving Naaman the Syrian.

Verse 28

All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this.

And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath,

Verse 29

They got up, drove Him out of the town, and took Him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw Him off the cliff.

And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong.

Verse 30

But He walked right through the crowd and went on His way.

But he passing through the midst of them went his way,

Verse 31

Then He went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and was teaching them on the Sabbath.

And came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath days.

Verse 32

They were astonished at His teaching, because His words were spoken with authority.

And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power.

Verse 33

In the synagogue, there was a man with a spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out in a loud voice,

And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil, and cried out with a loud voice,

Verse 34

The demon shouted, 'What do we have to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!'

Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God.

Verse 35

But Jesus rebuked it, saying, 'Be silent and come out of him.' Then the demon threw the man to the ground in their midst, but it came out of him without harming him.

And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not.

Verse 36

Everyone was amazed, and they said to one another, 'What is this message? With authority and power He commands unclean spirits, and they come out!'

And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out.

Verse 37

And the news about Him spread to every place in the surrounding region.

And the fame of him went out into every place of the country round about.

Verse 38

After leaving the synagogue, He went to Simon's house. Simon's mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Him to help her.

And he arose out of the synagogue, and entered into Simon's house. And Simon's wife's mother was taken with a great fever; and they besought him for her.

Verse 39

Standing over her, He rebuked the fever, and it left her. She immediately got up and began to serve them.

And he stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her: and immediately she arose and ministered unto them.

Verse 40

When the sun was setting, people brought to Him all who had various diseases. Laying His hands on each of them, He healed them.

Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them.

Verse 41

Demons also came out of many people, crying out, 'You are the Son of God!' But He rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew He was the Christ.

And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them suffered them not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ.

Verse 42

At daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place. The crowds were searching for Him, and they came to Him and tried to keep Him from leaving them.

And when it was day, he departed and went into a desert place: and the people sought him, and came unto him, and stayed him, that he should not depart from them.

Verse 43

But He said to them, 'I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent.'

And he said unto them, I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore am I sent.

Verse 44

And He continued preaching in the synagogues of Galilee.

And he preached in the synagogues of Galilee.
