Verse 1

After Jesus had finished all His teachings for the people to hear, He entered Capernaum.

Now when he had ended all his sayings in the audience of the people, he entered into Capernaum.

Verse 2

Now a centurion had a servant whom he valued highly, but the servant was sick and near death.

And a certain centurion's servant, who was dear unto him, was sick, and ready to die.

Verse 3

When the centurion heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders to Him, asking Him to come and heal his servant.

And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant.

Verse 4

When they came to Jesus, they earnestly pleaded with Him, saying, 'He is worthy for You to do this for him.'

And when they came to Jesus, they besought him instantly, saying, That he was worthy for whom he should do this:

Verse 5

'For he loves our nation, and he built our synagogue for us.'

For he loveth our nation, and he hath built us a synagogue.

Verse 6

So Jesus went with them. When He was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to say to Him, 'Lord, do not trouble Yourself, for I am not worthy to have You come under my roof.'

Then Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not thyself: for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof:

Verse 7

That is why I did not consider myself worthy to come to You. But speak a word, and my servant will be healed.

Wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee: but say in a word, and my servant shall be healed.

Verse 8

'For I also am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I say to one, "Go," and he goes; and to another, "Come," and he comes; and to my servant, "Do this," and he does it.'

For I also am a man set under authority, having under me soldiers, and I say unto one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.

Verse 9

When Jesus heard this, He marveled at him. Turning to the crowd following Him, He said, 'I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such great faith.'

When Jesus heard these things, he marvelled at him, and turned him about, and said unto the people that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.

Verse 10

When those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the servant well.

And they that were sent, returning to the house, found the servant whole that had been sick.

Verse 11

Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and His disciples and a large crowd went with Him.

And it came to pass the day after, that he went into a city called Nain; and many of his disciples went with him, and much people.

Verse 12

As Jesus approached the gate of the town, a dead man was being carried out—the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. A large crowd from the town was with her.

Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her.

Verse 13

When the Lord saw her, He was moved with compassion for her and said, 'Do not weep.'

And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not.

Verse 14

Then He approached the coffin, touched it, and the bearers stopped. He said, 'Young man, I say to you, arise.'

And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise.

Verse 15

The dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.

And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother.

Verse 16

Fear took hold of everyone, and they glorified God, saying, 'A great prophet has risen among us!' and 'God has visited His people!'

And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited his people.

Verse 17

This news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and all the surrounding region.

And this rumour of him went forth throughout all Judaea, and throughout all the region round about.

Verse 18

John's disciples reported all these things to him. Then John called two of his disciples.

And the disciples of John shewed him of all these things.

Verse 19

He sent them to the Lord to ask, 'Are You the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?'

And John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?

Verse 20

When the men came to Jesus, they said, 'John the Baptist has sent us to You to ask, "Are You the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?"'

When the men were come unto him, they said, John Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?

Verse 21

At that very time, Jesus healed many people of diseases, afflictions, and evil spirits, and He gave sight to many who were blind.

And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind he gave sight.

Verse 22

He replied to them, 'Go and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind see, the lame walk, those with leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor are told the good news.'

Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached.

Verse 23

Blessed is the one who does not stumble on account of Me.'

And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.

Verse 24

After John's messengers left, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: 'What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind?'

And when the messengers of John were departed, he began to speak unto the people concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness for to see? A reed shaken with the wind?

Verse 25

'But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothes? No, those who wear splendid clothes and indulge in luxury are in royal palaces.'

But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they which are gorgeously apparelled, and live delicately, are in kings' courts.

Verse 26

'But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.'

But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet.

Verse 27

'This is the one about whom it is written: "Look, I am sending My messenger ahead of You, who will prepare Your way before You."'

This is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.

Verse 28

'I tell you, among those born of women, no one is greater than John the Baptist. Yet, the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.'

For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.

Verse 29

(When all the people, including the tax collectors, heard this, they acknowledged that God's way was right, because they had been baptized by John.)

And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John.

Verse 30

But the Pharisees and the experts in the law rejected God's plan for themselves, because they had not been baptized by him.

But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him.

Verse 31

Jesus said, 'To what, then, can I compare the people of this generation? What are they like?'

And the Lord said, Whereunto then shall I liken the men of this generation? and to what are they like?

Verse 32

'They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another: "We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a lament, and you did not weep."'

They are like unto children sitting in the marketplace, and calling one to another, and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned to you, and ye have not wept.

Verse 33

'For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, "He has a demon!"'

For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine; and ye say, He hath a devil.

Verse 34

'The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, "Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!"'

The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners!

Verse 35

'Yet wisdom is justified by all her children.'

But wisdom is justified of all her children.

Verse 36

One of the Pharisees invited Jesus to eat with him. So Jesus went into the Pharisee's house and reclined at the table.

And one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him. And he went into the Pharisee's house, and sat down to meat.

Verse 37

And behold, a woman in the town who was a sinner learned that Jesus was reclining at the Pharisee's house. She brought an alabaster jar of perfume.

And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster box of ointment,

Verse 38

And standing behind Him at His feet, weeping, she began to wet His feet with her tears. She wiped them with the hair of her head, kissed His feet repeatedly, and anointed them with the perfume.

And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.

Verse 39

When the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he said to himself, 'If this man were a prophet, He would know who and what kind of woman is touching Him—she is a sinner.'

Now when the Pharisee which had bidden him saw it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him: for she is a sinner.

Verse 40

And Jesus answered him, 'Simon, I have something to say to you.' Simon replied, 'Say it, Teacher.'

And Jesus answering said unto him, Simon, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And he saith, Master, say on.

Verse 41

'A certain creditor had two debtors. One owed him five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.

There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty.

Verse 42

When neither of them could pay, he forgave them both. So which of them will love him more?'

And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most?

Verse 43

Simon answered, 'I suppose the one who had the larger debt forgiven.' Jesus said to him, 'You have judged correctly.'

Simon answered and said, I suppose that he, to whom he forgave most. And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged.

Verse 44

Turning to the woman, He said to Simon, 'Do you see this woman? I entered your house, and you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has wet My feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair.

And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head.

Verse 45

You gave Me no kiss, but from the time I came in, she has not stopped kissing My feet.

Thou gavest me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet.

Verse 46

You did not anoint My head with oil, but she has anointed My feet with perfume.

My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment.

Verse 47

Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven, as her great love has shown. But the one who is forgiven little, loves little.'

Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little.

Verse 48

Then Jesus said to her, 'Your sins are forgiven.'

And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven.

Verse 49

Those who were reclining at the table began to say among themselves, 'Who is this who even forgives sins?'

And they that sat at meat with him began to say within themselves, Who is this that forgiveth sins also?

Verse 50

And Jesus said to the woman, 'Your faith has saved you. Go in peace.'

And he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.
