Mark 9

1 And he said to them, 'Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come in power.'

And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That there be some of them that stand here, which shall not taste of death, till they have seen the kingdom of God come with power.

2 After six days, Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up a high mountain by themselves. There he was transfigured before them.

And after six days Jesus taketh with him Peter, and James, and John, and leadeth them up into an high mountain apart by themselves: and he was transfigured before them.

3 His clothes became dazzling, intensely white, as no launderer on earth could bleach them.

And his raiment became shining, exceeding white as snow; so as no fuller on earth can white them.

4 And Elijah appeared to them with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus.

And there appeared unto them Elias with Moses: and they were talking with Jesus.

5 Peter responded and said to Jesus, 'Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us make three tents: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.'

And Peter answered and said to Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.

6 For he did not know what to say, because they were terrified.

For he wist not what to say; for they were sore afraid.

7 And a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, 'This is my beloved Son. Listen to him!'

And there was a cloud that overshadowed them: and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.

8 Suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus alone.

And suddenly, when they had looked round about, they saw no man any more, save Jesus only with themselves.

9 As they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus instructed them not to tell anyone what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead.

And as they came down from the mountain, he charged them that they should tell no man what things they had seen, till the Son of man were risen from the dead.

10 So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what 'rising from the dead' might mean.

And they kept that saying with themselves, questioning one with another what the rising from the dead should mean.

11 And they asked him, 'Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?'

And they asked him, saying, Why say the scribes that Elias must first come?

12 Jesus replied, 'Elijah does come first and restores all things. And how is it written about the Son of Man that he must suffer many things and be rejected?'

And he answered and told them, Elias verily cometh first, and restoreth all things; and how it is written of the Son of man, that he must suffer many things, and be set at nought.

13 But I tell you that Elijah has come, and they did to him whatever they pleased, just as it is written about him.

But I say unto you, That Elias is indeed come, and they have done unto him whatsoever they listed, as it is written of him.

14 When they came to the disciples, they saw a large crowd around them, and the scribes arguing with them.

And when he came to his disciples, he saw a great multitude about them, and the scribes questioning with them.

15 As soon as the crowd saw Jesus, they were amazed and ran to greet him.

And straightway all the people, when they beheld him, were greatly amazed, and running to him saluted him.

16 And he asked the scribes, 'What are you discussing with them?'

And he asked the scribes, What question ye with them?

17 One of the crowd answered him, 'Teacher, I brought my son to you. He has a mute spirit.

And one of the multitude answered and said, Master, I have brought unto thee my son, which hath a dumb spirit;

18 Whenever it seizes him, it throws him down. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth, and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to cast it out, but they couldn’t.

And wheresoever he taketh him, he teareth him: and he foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away: and I spake to thy disciples that they should cast him out; and they could not.

19 Jesus replied, 'O unbelieving generation, how long must I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring him to me.'

He answereth him, and saith, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto me.

20 They brought the boy to him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into convulsions. He fell to the ground, rolled around, and foamed at the mouth.

And they brought him unto him: and when he saw him, straightway the spirit tare him; and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming.

21 Jesus asked the boy’s father, 'How long has this been happening to him?' He replied, 'Since childhood.

And he asked his father, How long is it ago since this came unto him? And he said, Of a child.

22 It has often thrown him into fire and water to destroy him. But if you can do anything, please have compassion on us and help us.'

And ofttimes it hath cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him: but if thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us.

23 Jesus said to him, 'If you can? Everything is possible for the one who believes.

Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.

24 Immediately the father of the child cried out, 'I believe! Help my unbelief!'

And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.

25 When Jesus saw that a crowd was gathering, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying, 'You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again!'

When Jesus saw that the people came running together, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him.

26 The spirit cried out, convulsed him violently, and came out. The boy looked so much like a corpse that many said, 'He is dead.'

And the spirit cried, and rent him sore, and came out of him: and he was as one dead; insomuch that many said, He is dead.

27 But Jesus took him by the hand, lifted him up, and he stood.

But Jesus took him by the hand, and lifted him up; and he arose.

28 After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately, 'Why couldn’t we drive it out?'

And when he was come into the house, his disciples asked him privately, Why could not we cast him out?

29 He replied, 'This kind can only come out by prayer and fasting.'

And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.

30 They left that place and passed through Galilee. Jesus did not want anyone to know where they were,

And they departed thence, and passed through Galilee; and he would not that any man should know it.

31 because he was teaching his disciples. He said to them, 'The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men. They will kill him, and after he is killed, he will rise on the third day.'

For he taught his disciples, and said unto them, The Son of man is delivered into the hands of men, and they shall kill him; and after that he is killed, he shall rise the third day.

32 But they did not understand what he meant and were afraid to ask him about it.

But they understood not that saying, and were afraid to ask him.

33 They came to Capernaum. When he was in the house, he asked them, 'What were you arguing about on the way?'

And he came to Capernaum: and being in the house he asked them, What was it that ye disputed among yourselves by the way?

34 But they kept silent, because on the way they had been arguing about who was the greatest.

But they held their peace: for by the way they had disputed among themselves, who should be the greatest.

35 Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, 'If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, and the servant of all.'

And he sat down, and called the twelve, and saith unto them, If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all.

36 He took a little child, placed him in the midst of them, and, taking the child in his arms, he said to them,

And he took a child, and set him in the midst of them: and when he had taken him in his arms, he said unto them,

37 'Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me.'

Whosoever shall receive one of such children in my name, receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me, receiveth not me, but him that sent me.

38 John said to him, 'Teacher, we saw someone driving out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him because he was not following us.'

And John answered him, saying, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name, and he followeth not us: and we forbad him, because he followeth not us.

39 'Do not stop him,' Jesus said. 'No one who does a miracle in my name can in the next moment say anything bad about me.'

But Jesus said, Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my name, that can lightly speak evil of me.

40 'For whoever is not against us is for us.'

For he that is not against us is on our part.

41 'Truly I tell you, anyone who gives you a cup of water in my name because you belong to Christ will certainly not lose their reward.'

For whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name, because ye belong to Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward.

42 'If anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to stumble, it would be better for them if a large millstone were hung around their neck and they were thrown into the sea.'

And whosoever shall offend one of these little ones that believe in me, it is better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he were cast into the sea.

43 If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than to have two hands and go into hell, where the fire never goes out.

And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:

44 Where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.

Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

45 If your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame than to have two feet and be thrown into hell, where the fire never goes out.

And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:

46 Where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.

Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

47 If your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell,

And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire:

48 Where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.

Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

49 For everyone will be salted with fire, and every sacrifice will be seasoned with salt.

For every one shall be salted with fire, and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt.

50 Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? Have salt among yourselves and be at peace with one another.

Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will ye season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another.
