When Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wall, he became furious and very angry and mocked the Jews.

He said in front of his companions and the army of Samaria, 'What are these feeble Jews doing? Will they restore it for themselves? Will they offer sacrifices? Will they finish in a day? Can they bring these stones back to life from the rubble, burned as they are?'

Tobiah the Ammonite, who was beside him, said, 'Even if a fox climbed up on it, it would break down their stone wall!'”

Hear us, our God, for we are despised. Return their scorn on their own heads, and make them objects of plunder in a land of exile.

Do not cover up their guilt or let their sins be blotted out from your sight, for they have provoked you to anger in front of the builders.

So we built the wall, and the entire wall was joined together up to half its height, because the people had a mind to work.
