1 Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good, and His steadfast love endures forever.
O give thanks unto the LORD, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.
2 Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, those He has redeemed from the hand of the adversary.
Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy;
3 He gathered them from the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south.
And gathered them out of the lands, from the east, and from the west, from the north, and from the south.
4 They wandered in the wilderness, in a desolate place; they found no way to a city where they could settle.
They wandered in the wilderness in a solitary way; they found no city to dwell in.
5 Hungry and thirsty, their souls grew faint within them.
Hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted in them.
6 Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He delivered them from their distress.
Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them out of their distresses.
7 He led them on a straight path to a city where they could settle.
And he led them forth by the right way, that they might go to a city of habitation.
8 Let them give thanks to the LORD for His steadfast love and His wonderful deeds for mankind.
Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!
9 For He satisfies the longing soul and fills the hungry soul with good things.
For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.
10 Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, prisoners in misery and chains.
Such as sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, being bound in affliction and iron;
11 For they had rebelled against the words of God and despised the counsel of the Most High.
Because they rebelled against the words of God, and contemned the counsel of the most High:
12 So He humbled their hearts with labor; they stumbled, and there was no one to help.
Therefore he brought down their heart with labour; they fell down, and there was none to help.
13 Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He saved them from their distress.
Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them out of their distresses.
14 He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death and broke their chains apart.
He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and brake their bands in sunder.
15 Let them give thanks to the LORD for His steadfast love and His wonderful deeds for mankind.
16 For He has broken down the gates of bronze and cut through the bars of iron.
For he hath broken the gates of brass, and cut the bars of iron in sunder.
17 Some became fools because of their rebellious ways and suffered because of their sins.
Fools because of their transgression, and because of their iniquities, are afflicted.
18 They loathed all food and drew near to the gates of death.
Their soul abhorreth all manner of meat; and they draw near unto the gates of death.
19 Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He saved them from their distress.
Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, and he saveth them out of their distresses.
20 He sent His word and healed them, and delivered them from their destruction.
He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.
21 Let them give thanks to the LORD for His steadfast love and His wonderful deeds for mankind.
22 Let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving and tell of His works with shouts of joy.
And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and declare his works with rejoicing.
23 Some went down to the sea in ships, doing business on the great waters.
They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters;
24 They saw the works of the LORD and His wonderful deeds in the deep.
These see the works of the LORD, and his wonders in the deep.
25 For He spoke and raised up a stormy wind, which lifted the waves of the sea.
For he commandeth, and raiseth the stormy wind, which lifteth up the waves thereof.
26 They rose up to the heavens, then they went down to the depths; their courage melted away in their distress.
They mount up to the heaven, they go down again to the depths: their soul is melted because of trouble.
27 They reeled and staggered like drunkards, and all their skill was useless.
They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wits' end.
28 Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He brought them out of their distress.
Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distresses.
29 He stilled the storm to a whisper, and the waves of the sea were quiet.
He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still.
30 They rejoiced when the waters grew calm, and He guided them to the harbor they desired.
Then are they glad because they be quiet; so he bringeth them unto their desired haven.
31 Let them give thanks to the LORD for His steadfast love and His wonderful deeds for mankind.
32 Let them exalt Him in the assembly of the people and praise Him in the council of the elders.
Let them exalt him also in the congregation of the people, and praise him in the assembly of the elders.
33 He turns rivers into a desert, springs of water into parched ground,
He turneth rivers into a wilderness, and the watersprings into dry ground;
34 and a fruitful land into a salt waste, because of the wickedness of those who dwell there.
A fruitful land into barrenness, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein.
35 He turns the desert into pools of water, and a dry land into flowing springs.
He turneth the wilderness into a standing water, and dry ground into watersprings.
36 There He settles the hungry, and they establish a city to live in.
And there he maketh the hungry to dwell, that they may prepare a city for habitation;
37 They sowed fields and planted vineyards, which yielded a fruitful harvest.
And sow the fields, and plant vineyards, which may yield fruits of increase.
38 He blessed them, and they multiplied greatly, and He did not let their livestock decrease.
He blesseth them also, so that they are multiplied greatly; and suffereth not their cattle to decrease.
39 Yet they were diminished and brought low through oppression, calamity, and sorrow.
Again, they are minished and brought low through oppression, affliction, and sorrow.
40 He pours out contempt on nobles and makes them wander in a trackless wasteland.
He poureth contempt upon princes, and causeth them to wander in the wilderness, where there is no way.
41 But He lifts the needy out of their affliction and makes their families like flocks.
Yet setteth he the poor on high from affliction, and maketh him families like a flock.
42 The upright see this and rejoice, but all wickedness shuts its mouth.
The righteous shall see it, and rejoice: and all iniquity shall stop her mouth.
43 Let whoever is wise heed these things and consider the lovingkindness of the LORD.
Whoso is wise, and will observe these things, even they shall understand the lovingkindness of the LORD.
