1 For the choir director: A song to be sung to the tune of 'Lilies.' A psalm of David.

Save me, O God; for the waters are come in unto my soul.

2 Save me, God, because the waters have come up to my neck.

I sink in deep mire, where there is no standing: I am come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me.

3 I am sinking in deep mire where there is no foothold. I have come into deep waters, and the current has overwhelmed me.

I am weary of my crying: my throat is dried: mine eyes fail while I wait for my God.

4 I am tired of calling for help; my throat is parched. My eyes are worn out from looking for my God.

They that hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of mine head: they that would destroy me, being mine enemies wrongfully, are mighty: then I restored that which I took not away.

5 More numerous than the hairs of my head are those who hate me without cause; powerful are those who seek to destroy me with lies. What I did not steal must I now restore?

O God, thou knowest my foolishness; and my sins are not hid from thee.

6 God, you know my foolishness, and my guilt is not hidden from you.

Let not them that wait on thee, O Lord GOD of hosts, be ashamed for my sake: let not those that seek thee be confounded for my sake, O God of Israel.

7 Let those who hope in you, Lord God of Hosts, not be ashamed because of me; let those who seek you, God of Israel, not be humiliated because of me.

Because for thy sake I have borne reproach; shame hath covered my face.

8 For I have endured insult for your sake, and shame has covered my face.

I am become a stranger unto my brethren, and an alien unto my mother's children.

9 I have become a stranger to my brothers, an alien to my mother’s sons.

For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me.

10 For zeal for your house has consumed me, and the insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.

When I wept, and chastened my soul with fasting, that was to my reproach.

11 I wept and fasted, but it brought reproach on me.

I made sackcloth also my garment; and I became a proverb to them.

12 I wore sackcloth as my clothing and became a byword to them.

They that sit in the gate speak against me; and I was the song of the drunkards.

13 Those who sit at the gate talk about me, and drunkards make up songs about me.

But as for me, my prayer is unto thee, O LORD, in an acceptable time: O God, in the multitude of thy mercy hear me, in the truth of thy salvation.

14 But as for me, my prayer is to you, Lord, at an acceptable time. God, in your abundant love, answer me with your salvation, which is sure.

Deliver me out of the mire, and let me not sink: let me be delivered from them that hate me, and out of the deep waters.

15 Rescue me from the mud, and do not let me sink. Deliver me from those who hate me, and from the deep waters.

Let not the waterflood overflow me, neither let the deep swallow me up, and let not the pit shut her mouth upon me.

16 Do not let the floodwaters overwhelm me; do not let the deep swallow me up, or let the pit close its mouth over me.

Hear me, O LORD; for thy lovingkindness is good: turn unto me according to the multitude of thy tender mercies.

17 Answer me, LORD, because your steadfast love is good; in your abundant compassion, turn to me.

And hide not thy face from thy servant; for I am in trouble: hear me speedily.

18 Do not hide your face from your servant, for I am in distress. Hurry and answer me.

Draw nigh unto my soul, and redeem it: deliver me because of mine enemies.

19 Come near to my soul and redeem it; because of my enemies, ransom me.

Thou hast known my reproach, and my shame, and my dishonour: mine adversaries are all before thee.

20 You know my reproach, my shame, and my disgrace; all my adversaries are before you.

Reproach hath broken my heart; and I am full of heaviness: and I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found none.

21 Reproach has broken my heart, and I am in despair. I looked for sympathy, but there was none; for comforters, but I found no one.

They gave me also gall for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.

22 They gave me poison for food, and for my thirst, they gave me vinegar to drink.

Let their table become a snare before them: and that which should have been for their welfare, let it become a trap.

23 Let their table before them become a snare, and their security a trap.

Let their eyes be darkened, that they see not; and make their loins continually to shake.

24 Let their eyes be darkened so they cannot see, and their bodies always shake and tremble.

Pour out thine indignation upon them, and let thy wrathful anger take hold of them.

25 Pour out your indignation on them, and let your fierce anger overtake them.

Let their habitation be desolate; and let none dwell in their tents.

26 Let their encampments be desolate; may no one dwell in their tents.

For they persecute him whom thou hast smitten; and they talk to the grief of those whom thou hast wounded.

27 For they persecute those you have struck, and they recount the pain of those you have wounded.

Add iniquity unto their iniquity: and let them not come into thy righteousness.

28 Add guilt to their guilt, and let them not enter into your righteousness.

Let them be blotted out of the book of the living, and not be written with the righteous.

29 Let them be blotted out of the book of life, and not be recorded with the righteous.

But I am poor and sorrowful: let thy salvation, O God, set me up on high.

30 But I am afflicted and in pain; your salvation, O God, will set me up on high.

I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving.

31 I will praise the name of God with a song; I will magnify him with thanksgiving.

This also shall please the LORD better than an ox or bullock that hath horns and hoofs.

32 This will please the LORD more than an ox, or a bull with horns and hooves.

The humble shall see this, and be glad: and your heart shall live that seek God.

33 The humble see it and rejoice; you who seek God, may your hearts live.

For the LORD heareth the poor, and despiseth not his prisoners.

34 For the LORD hears the needy and does not despise his prisoners.

Let the heaven and earth praise him, the seas, and every thing that moveth therein.

35 Let the heavens and the earth praise Him, the seas and everything that moves in them.

For God will save Zion, and will build the cities of Judah: that they may dwell there, and have it in possession.

36 For God will save Zion and build the cities of Judah. They will dwell there and possess it.

The seed also of his servants shall inherit it: and they that love his name shall dwell therein.

37 The descendants of His servants will inherit it, and those who love His name will dwell in it.
