Verse 1

Then Naomi, her mother-in-law, said to her, 'My daughter, should I not seek a home for you where you will be well taken care of?'

Then Naomi her mother in law said unto her, My daughter, shall I not seek rest for thee, that it may be well with thee?

Verse 2

Now is not Boaz, our relative, with whose young women you have been working? Tonight, he will be winnowing barley at the threshing floor.

And now is not Boaz of our kindred, with whose maidens thou wast? Behold, he winnoweth barley to night in the threshingfloor.

Verse 3

Wash, anoint yourself, and put on your best clothes. Then go down to the threshing floor, but do not let him know you are there until he has finished eating and drinking.

Wash thyself therefore, and anoint thee, and put thy raiment upon thee, and get thee down to the floor: but make not thyself known unto the man, until he shall have done eating and drinking.

Verse 4

When he lies down, take note of the place where he is lying. Then go, uncover his feet, and lie down. He will tell you what to do.

And it shall be, when he lieth down, that thou shalt mark the place where he shall lie, and thou shalt go in, and uncover his feet, and lay thee down; and he will tell thee what thou shalt do.

Verse 5

And she said to her, 'I will do everything you say.'

And she said unto her, All that thou sayest unto me I will do.

Verse 6

So she went down to the threshing floor and did everything her mother-in-law had instructed her.

And she went down unto the floor, and did according to all that her mother in law bade her.

Verse 7

When Boaz had finished eating and drinking and was in good spirits, he went to lie down at the far end of the grain pile. Then she came quietly, uncovered his feet, and lay down.

And when Boaz had eaten and drunk, and his heart was merry, he went to lie down at the end of the heap of corn: and she came softly, and uncovered his feet, and laid her down.

Verse 8

In the middle of the night, the man was startled and turned over; there was a woman lying at his feet!

And it came to pass at midnight, that the man was afraid, and turned himself: and, behold, a woman lay at his feet.

Verse 9

He asked, 'Who are you?' She answered, 'I am Ruth, your servant. Spread the corner of your garment over your servant, for you are a guardian-redeemer.'

And he said, Who art thou? And she answered, I am Ruth thine handmaid: spread therefore thy skirt over thine handmaid; for thou art a near kinsman.

Verse 10

He said, 'May you be blessed by the LORD, my daughter. You have shown great kindness now, even greater than before, by not pursuing younger men, whether rich or poor.'

And he said, Blessed be thou of the LORD, my daughter: for thou hast shewed more kindness in the latter end than at the beginning, inasmuch as thou followedst not young men, whether poor or rich.

Verse 11

And now, my daughter, do not be afraid. I will do for you everything you ask, for everyone in town knows that you are a woman of noble character.

And now, my daughter, fear not; I will do to thee all that thou requirest: for all the city of my people doth know that thou art a virtuous woman.

Verse 12

Now, it is true that I am a guardian-redeemer, but there is another redeemer who is more closely related than I am.

And now it is true that I am thy near kinsman: howbeit there is a kinsman nearer than I.

Verse 13

Stay here for the night. In the morning, if he wishes to redeem you, good—let him redeem you. But if he is not willing, as surely as the LORD lives, I will redeem you. Lie down here until morning.

Tarry this night, and it shall be in the morning, that if he will perform unto thee the part of a kinsman, well; let him do the kinsman's part: but if he will not do the part of a kinsman to thee, then will I do the part of a kinsman to thee, as the LORD liveth: lie down until the morning.

Verse 14

So she lay at his feet until morning but got up before anyone could recognize another. For he said, 'Let it not be known that a woman came to the threshing floor.'

And she lay at his feet until the morning: and she rose up before one could know another. And he said, Let it not be known that a woman came into the floor.

Verse 15

And he said, 'Bring me the cloak that you are wearing and hold it out.' So she held it out, and he measured out six measures of barley and placed it on her. Then he went into the town.

Also he said, Bring the vail that thou hast upon thee, and hold it. And when she held it, he measured six measures of barley, and laid it on her: and she went into the city.

Verse 16

When Ruth came to her mother-in-law, Naomi asked, 'How did it go, my daughter?' Then she told her everything the man had done for her.

And when she came to her mother in law, she said, Who art thou, my daughter? And she told her all that the man had done to her.

Verse 17

She added, 'He gave me these six measures of barley, saying, “Do not go back to your mother-in-law empty-handed.”'

And she said, These six measures of barley gave he me; for he said to me, Go not empty unto thy mother in law.

Verse 18

Then Naomi said, 'Wait, my daughter, until you find out how things will turn out, for the man will not rest until he has resolved the matter today.'

Then said she, Sit still, my daughter, until thou know how the matter will fall: for the man will not be in rest, until he have finished the thing this day.
