1 "Brødre og fedre, lytt til forsvaret jeg nå fremfører for dere."

"Brothers and fathers, listen to the defense which I now make to you."

2 Da de hørte at han talte til dem på hebraisk, ble de enda roligere. Han sa,

When they heard that he spoke to them in the Hebrew language, they were even more quiet. He said,

3 "Jeg er en jøde, født i Tarsus i Kilikia, men oppfostret i denne byen ved Gamaliels føtter, instruert ifølge den strenge loven til våre fedre, ivrig for Gud, slik dere alle er i dag.

"I am indeed a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, instructed according to the strict manner of the law of our fathers, being zealous for God, even as you all are this day.

4 Jeg forfulgte denne Veien til døden, bandt og kastet i fengsel både menn og kvinner.

I persecuted this Way to the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women.

5 Som også ypperstepresten og hele eldsterådet kan vitne om. Fra dem fikk jeg også brev til brødrene, og reiste til Damaskus for å føre også dem som var der til Jerusalem i lenker for å bli straffet.

As also the high priest and all the council of the elders testify, from whom also I received letters to the brothers, and traveled to Damascus to bring them also who were there to Jerusalem in bonds to be punished.

6 Det skjedde at mens jeg var på vei, nærmet jeg meg Damaskus. Omkring middagstider skinte plutselig et stort lys fra himmelen rundt meg.

It happened that, as I made my journey, and came close to Damascus, about noon, suddenly there shone from the sky a great light around me.

7 Jeg falt til jorden og hørte en stemme som sa til meg: 'Saul, Saul, hvorfor forfølger du meg?'

I fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to me, 'Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?'

8 Jeg svarte: 'Hvem er du, Herre?' Han sa til meg: 'Jeg er Jesus fra Nasaret, han du forfølger.'

I answered, 'Who are you, Lord?' He said to me, 'I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you persecute.'

9 "De som var med meg, så virkelig lyset og ble redde, men de forstod ikke stemmen til han som talte til meg.

"Those who were with me indeed saw the light and were afraid, but they didn't understand the voice of him who spoke to me.

10 Jeg sa: 'Hva skal jeg gjøre, Herre?' Herren sa til meg: 'Stå opp og gå inn i Damaskus. Der vil det bli fortalt deg alt som er bestemt for deg å gjøre.'

I said, 'What shall I do, Lord?' The Lord said to me, 'Arise, and go into Damascus. There you will be told about all things which are appointed for you to do.'

11 Da jeg ikke kunne se på grunn av lysets stråleglans, ble jeg ledet av hånden av de som var med meg, og jeg kom inn i Damaskus.

When I couldn't see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of those who were with me, I came into Damascus.

12 En mann ved navn Ananias, en from mann etter loven, godt vitnet om av alle jødene som bodde i Damaskus,

One Ananias, a devout man according to the law, well reported of by all the Jews who lived in Damascus,

13 kom til meg og sto ved meg og sa: 'Bror Saul, få synet ditt tilbake!' I samme stund så jeg opp på ham.

came to me, and standing by me said to me, 'Brother Saul, receive your sight!' In that very hour I looked up at him.

14 Han sa: 'Våre fedres Gud har utvalgt deg til å kjenne sin vilje, og til å se Den Rettferdige og høre en stemme fra hans munn.

He said, 'The God of our fathers has appointed you to know his will, and to see the Righteous One, and to hear a voice from his mouth.

15 For du skal være hans vitne for alle mennesker om det du har sett og hørt.

For you will be a witness for him to all men of what you have seen and heard.

16 Hvorfor nøler du nå? Stå opp, bli døpt og vask bort dine synder, idet du påkaller Herrens navn.'

Now why do you wait? Arise, be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.'

17 "Det hendte da jeg var kommet tilbake til Jerusalem, mens jeg ba i tempelet, at jeg falt i transe,

"It happened that, when I had returned to Jerusalem, and while I prayed in the temple, I fell into a trance,

18 og så ham si til meg: 'Skynd deg og kom deg raskt ut av Jerusalem, for de vil ikke ta imot vitnesbyrdet fra deg om meg.'

and saw him saying to me, 'Hurry and get out of Jerusalem quickly, because they will not receive testimony concerning me from you.'

19 Jeg sa: 'Herre, de vet selv at jeg har fengslet og slått dem i hver synagoge som trodde på deg.

I said, 'Lord, they themselves know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue those who believed in you.

20 Mens blodet av din vitne Stefanus ble utøst, sto jeg også ved og samtykket i hans død og voktet klærne til dem som drepte ham.'

When the blood of Stephen, your witness, was shed, I also was standing by, and consenting to his death, and guarding the cloaks of those who killed him.'

21 "Han sa til meg: 'Reis bort, for jeg vil sende deg langt herfra til folkeslagene.'"}, {

"He said to me, 'Depart, for I will send you out far from here to the Gentiles.'"

22 De lyttet til ham helt til han sa det; da hevet de stemmen og sa: "Fjern denne mannen fra jorden, for han er ikke verdig til å leve!"

They listened to him until he said that; then they lifted up their voice, and said, "Rid the earth of this fellow, for he isn't fit to live!"

23 Mens de ropte og kastet sine kapper av seg, og kastet støv i luften,

As they cried out, and threw off their cloaks, and threw dust into the air,

24 befalte kommandanten at han skulle føres inn i brakka, og beordret at han skulle forhøres ved pisking, slik at han kunne få vite for hvilken forbrytelse de ropte mot ham slik.

the commanding officer commanded him to be brought into the barracks, ordering him to be examined by scourging, that he might know for what crime they shouted against him like that.

25 Da de hadde bundet ham med reimer, spurte Paulus den centurion som sto ved: "Er det lovlig for dere å piske en mann som er romer, og ennå ikke dømt?"

When they had tied him up with thongs, Paul asked the centurion who stood by, "Is it lawful for you to scourge a man who is a Roman, and not found guilty?"

26 Da centurionen hørte det, gikk han til kommandanten og sa: "Vær forsiktig med hva du gjør, for denne mannen er romer!"

When the centurion heard it, he went to the commanding officer and told him, "Watch what you are about to do, for this man is a Roman!"

27 Kommandanten kom og spurte ham: "Fortell meg, er du en romer?" Han svarte: "Ja."

The commanding officer came and asked him, "Tell me, are you a Roman?" He said, "Yes."

28 Kommandanten svarte: "Jeg kjøpte min borgerskap for en stor sum." Paulus sa: "Men jeg er født romer."

The commanding officer answered, "I bought my citizenship for a great price." Paul said, "But I was born a Roman."

29 Straks trakk de som skulle forhøre ham seg unna, og kommandanten ble også redd da han innså at han var romer, fordi han hadde bundet ham.

Immediately those who were about to examine him departed from him, and the commanding officer also was afraid when he realized that he was a Roman, because he had bound him.

30 Men dagen etter, da han ønsket å vite sannheten om hvorfor han ble anklaget av jødene, frigjorde han ham fra lenkene, og befalte yppersteprestene og hele rådet å samles, og førte Paulus ned og stilte ham framfor dem.

But on the next day, desiring to know the truth about why he was accused by the Jews, he freed him from the bonds, and commanded the chief priests and all the council to come together, and brought Paul down and set him before them.
