1 Paulus så fast på rådet og sa: "Brødre, jeg har levd med god samvittighet for Gud helt til i dag."

Paul, looking steadfastly at the council, said, "Brothers, I have lived before God in all good conscience until this day."

The high priest, Ananias, commanded those who stood by him to strike him on the mouth.

Then Paul said to him, "God will strike you, you whitewashed wall! Do you sit to judge me according to the law, and command me to be struck contrary to the law?"

4 De som sto ved sa: "Spoter du Guds yppersteprest?"

Those who stood by said, "Do you malign God's high priest?"

5 Paulus sa: "Jeg visste ikke, brødre, at han var yppersteprest. For det står skrevet: 'Du skal ikke tale ondt om en leder blant ditt folk.'"

Paul said, "I didn't know, brothers, that he was high priest. For it is written, 'You shall not speak evil of a ruler of your people.'"

6 Da Paulus forsto at den ene delen var saddukeere og den andre fariseere, ropte han ut i rådet: "Menn og brødre, jeg er en fariseer, sønn av fariseere. For håpet og oppstandelsen fra de døde blir jeg dømt!"

But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, "Men and brothers, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees. Concerning the hope and resurrection of the dead I am being judged!"

7 Da han sa dette, oppsto det en strid mellom fariseerne og saddukeerne, og forsamlingen ble splittet.

When he had said this, an argument arose between the Pharisees and Sadducees, and the assembly was divided.

8 For saddukeerne sier at det ikke er noen oppstandelse, ikke engler, ikke ånder; men fariseerne bekjenner alt dette.

For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit; but the Pharisees confess all of these.

9 Det oppsto et stort oppstyr, og noen av de skriftlærde fra fariseernes del reiste seg og sa: "Vi finner ingen ondskap i denne mannen. Men om en ånd eller en engel har talt til ham, la oss ikke kjempe mot Gud!"

A great clamor arose, and some of the scribes of the Pharisees part stood up, and contended, saying, "We find no evil in this man. But if a spirit or angel has spoken to him, let's not fight against God!"

10 Da det ble stor strid, fryktet hærføreren at Paulus ville bli revet i stykker av dem, og befalte soldatene å gå ned og ta ham bort med makt fra deres midte, og føre ham inn i kasernen.

When a great argument arose, the commanding officer, fearing that Paul would be torn in pieces by them, commanded the soldiers to go down and take him by force from among them, and bring him into the barracks.

11 Natten etter sto Herren ved ham og sa: "Vær ved godt mot, Paulus, for slik som du har vitnet om meg i Jerusalem, må du også vitne i Roma."

The following night, the Lord stood by him, and said, "Cheer up, Paul, for as you have testified about me at Jerusalem, so you must testify also at Rome."

12 Da det ble dag, slo noen av jødene seg sammen og sverget en ed at de verken ville spise eller drikke før de hadde drept Paulus.

When it was day, some of the Jews banded together, and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink until they had killed Paul.

13 Det var mer enn førti som hadde inngått denne sammensvergelsen.

There were more than forty people who had made this conspiracy.

14 De kom til yppersteprestene og de eldste og sa: "Vi har bundet oss med en stor ed om ikke å smake noe før vi har drept Paulus.

They came to the chief priests and the elders, and said, "We have bound ourselves under a great curse, to taste nothing until we have killed Paul.

15 Nå, derfor, skal dere med rådet melde til hærføreren at han skal føre ham ned til dere i morgen, som om dere vil undersøke saken nærmere. Vi er klare til å drepe ham før han kommer fram."

Now therefore, you with the council inform the commanding officer that he should bring him down to you tomorrow, as though you were going to judge his case more exactly. We are ready to kill him before he comes near."

16 Men Paulus' søstersønn hørte om dette bakholdsangrepet, og gikk inn i kasernen og fortalte det til Paulus.

But Paul's sister's son heard of their lying in wait, and he came and entered into the barracks and told Paul.

17 Paulus kalte til seg en av centurionene og sa: "Før denne unge mannen til hærføreren, for han har noe å si ham."

Paul summoned one of the centurions, and said, "Bring this young man to the commanding officer, for he has something to tell him."

18 Så tok han han med seg til hærføreren og sa: "Paulus, fangen, kalte meg til seg og ba meg føre denne unge mannen til deg, da han har noe å si deg."

So he took him, and brought him to the commanding officer, and said, "Paul, the prisoner, summoned me and asked me to bring this young man to you, who has something to tell you."

19 Hærføreren tok ham ved hånden, trakk ham til side og spurte privat: "Hva er det du har å si meg?"

The commanding officer took him by the hand, and going aside, asked him privately, "What is it that you have to tell me?"

20 Han sa: "Jødene har blitt enige om å be deg føre Paulus ned til rådet i morgen, som om de vil undersøke noe mer nøyaktig om ham.

He said, "The Jews have agreed to ask you to bring Paul down to the council tomorrow, as though intending to inquire somewhat more accurately concerning him.

Therefore don't yield to them, for more than forty men lie in wait for him, who have bound themselves under a curse neither to eat nor to drink until they have killed him. Now they are ready, looking for the promise from you."

22 Så lot hærføreren den unge mannen gå og befalte ham: "Fortell ingen at du har avslørt dette for meg."

So the commanding officer let the young man go, charging him, "Tell no one that you have revealed these things to me."

23 Han kalte til seg to av centurionene og sa: "Gjør klar to hundre soldater til å dra så langt som til Cæsarea, med sytti ryttere og to hundre spydmenn, ved den tredje time av natten {omtrent klokken 21:00}."

He called to himself two of the centurions, and said, "Prepare two hundred soldiers to go as far as Caesarea, with seventy horsemen, and two hundred men armed with spears, at the third hour of the night{about 9:00 PM}."

24 Han ba dem skaffe dyr til å sette Paulus på, og føre ham trygt til guvernør Felix.

He asked them to provide animals, that they might set Paul on one, and bring him safely to Felix the governor.

25 Han skrev et brev med følgende ord:

He wrote a letter like this:

26 "Claudius Lysias til den mest utmerkede guvernør Felix: Hilsen.

"Claudius Lysias to the most excellent governor Felix: Greetings.

27 "Denne mannen ble tatt av jødene og var i ferd med å bli drept av dem, da jeg kom med soldatene og reddet ham, etter å ha fått vite at han var romersk.

"This man was seized by the Jews, and was about to be killed by them, when I came with the soldiers and rescued him, having learned that he was a Roman.

28 Ønskende å vite årsaken til hvorfor de anklaget ham, førte jeg ham ned til deres råd.

Desiring to know the cause why they accused him, I brought him down to their council.

29 Jeg fant ham å være anklaget om spørsmål i deres lov, men å ikke ha gjort noe som fortjener død eller lenker.

I found him to be accused about questions of their law, but to have nothing laid to his charge worthy of death or of bonds.

30 Da jeg fikk vite at jødene lå i bakhold for mannen, sendte jeg ham straks til deg, og ba også anklagerne komme med sine anklager mot ham for deg. Farvel."

When I was told that the Jews lay in wait for the man, I sent him to you immediately, charging his accusers also to bring their accusations against him before you. Farewell."

31 Så tok soldatene Paulus og førte ham om natten til Antipatris, som de hadde fått befaling om.

So the soldiers, carrying out their orders, took Paul and brought him by night to Antipatris.

32 Men neste dag lot de rytterene dra videre med ham, mens de selv vendte tilbake til kasernen.

But on the next day they left the horsemen to go with him, and returned to the barracks.

33 Da de kom til Cæsarea, overleverte de brevet til guvernøren og fremstilte Paulus for ham.

When they came to Caesarea and delivered the letter to the governor, they also presented Paul to him.

34 Da guvernøren hadde lest det, spurte han hvilken provins han kom fra. Da han forsto at han var fra Kilikia, sa han:

When the governor had read it, he asked what province he was from. When he understood that he was from Cilicia, he said,

35 "Jeg vil høre deg fullt ut når også dine anklagere kommer." Han befalte at han skulle holdes i Herodes' palass.

"I will hear you fully when your accusers also arrive." He commanded that he be kept in Herod's palace.
