Hvis det står fram en profet hos deg, eller en drømmer, og han gir deg et tegn eller et under,

If there arise in the midst of you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and he give you a sign or a wonder,

og tegnet eller underet skjer, slik han har talt til deg og sagt: La oss følge andre guder, som du ikke har kjent, og la oss tjene dem;

and the sign or the wonder come to pass, of which he spoke to you, saying, Let us go after other gods, which you have not known, and let us serve them;

så skal du ikke lytte til ordene fra den profeten eller den drømmeren. For Herren din Gud setter deg på prøve, for å vite om du elsker Herren din Gud av hele ditt hjerte og av hele din sjel.

you shall not listen to the words of that prophet, or to that dreamer of dreams: for Yahweh your God proves you, to know whether you love Yahweh your God with all your heart and with all your soul.

Du skal følge Herren din Gud, og frykte ham, holde hans bud og høre på hans røst. Du skal tjene ham og holde fast ved ham.

You shall walk after Yahweh your God, and fear him, and keep his commandments, and obey his voice, and you shall serve him, and cleave to him.

Den profeten eller drømmeren skal dø, fordi han har ansporet til frafall fra Herren din Gud, som førte deg ut av landet Egypt, og fridde deg fra slavehuset, for å få deg bort fra den veien Herren din Gud har befalt deg å følge. Slik skal du fjerne det onde fra deg.

That prophet, or that dreamer of dreams, shall be put to death, because he has spoken rebellion against Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, to draw you aside out of the way which Yahweh your God commanded you to walk in. So shall you put away the evil from the midst of you.

Hvis din bror, din mors sønn, eller din sønn eller datter, eller din elskede hustru, eller din venn, som er som din egen sjel, lokker deg hemmelig og sier: La oss gå og tjene andre guder, som hverken du eller dine fedre har kjent,

If your brother, the son of your mother, or your son, or your daughter, or the wife of your bosom, or your friend, who is as your own soul, entice you secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which you have not known, you, nor your fathers;

guder fra folkene rundt omkring, nær deg eller langt borte fra deg, fra den ene enden av jorden til den andre,

of the gods of the peoples who are round about you, near to you, or far off from you, from the one end of the earth even to the other end of the earth;

da skal du ikke gi etter for ham, og ikke lytt til ham. Du skal ikke ha medlidenhet, ikke spare ham, og ikke skjule ham.

you shall not consent to him, nor listen to him; neither shall your eye pity him, neither shall you spare, neither shall you conceal him:

Men du skal drepe ham; din hånd skal være den første over ham til å slå ham i hjel, og deretter hele folkets hånd.

but you shall surely kill him; your hand shall be first on him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people.

Du skal steine ham til døde med stein, fordi han har forsøkt å lede deg bort fra Herren din Gud, som førte deg ut av landet Egypt, ut av slavehuset.

You shall stone him to death with stones, because he has sought to draw you away from Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

Hele Israel skal høre om det og frykte, og de skal ikke lenger gjøre en slik ondskap blant dere.

All Israel shall hear, and fear, and shall not do any more such wickedness as this is in the midst of you.

Hvis du hører om en av dine byer, som Herren din Gud gir deg å bo i,

If you shall hear tell concerning one of your cities, which Yahweh your God gives you to dwell there, saying,

at noen fordervede mennesker har gått ut fra blant dere og har forført innbyggerne i byen deres, og sagt: La oss gå og tjene andre guder, som dere ikke har kjent,

Certain base fellows are gone out from the midst of you, and have drawn away the inhabitants of their city, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which you have not known;

da skal du undersøke, granske og spørre nøye. Og se, hvis det er sant og visst at en slik vederstyggelighet er blitt gjort blant dere,

then shall you inquire, and make search, and ask diligently; and, behold, if it be truth, and the thing certain, that such abomination is done in the midst of you,

så skal du ytterst grundig utrydde innbyggerne i den byen med sverd, tilintetgjøre byen fullstendig og alt som er i den, også dyrene, med sverd.

you shall surely strike the inhabitants of that city with the edge of the sword, destroying it utterly, and all that is therein and the cattle of it, with the edge of the sword.

Du skal samle all byens bytte midt på torget, og brenne byen med alt byttet som heloffer for Herren din Gud. Og den skal forbli en ruinhaug til evig tid, den skal aldri bli gjenoppbygd.

You shall gather all the spoil of it into the midst of the street of it, and shall burn with fire the city, and all the spoil of it every whit, to Yahweh your God: and it shall be a heap forever; it shall not be built again.

Ingenting av det bannlyste skal bli igjen i din hånd, for at Herren skal vende seg fra sin voldsomme vrede og vise deg barmhjertighet, at Han må ha medlidenhet med deg og mangfoldiggjøre deg, som Han har sverget til dine fedre;

There shall cleave nothing of the devoted thing to your hand; that Yahweh may turn from the fierceness of his anger, and show you mercy, and have compassion on you, and multiply you, as he has sworn to your fathers;

når du adlyder Herren din Guds røst og holder alle hans bud som jeg gir deg i dag, og gjør det som er rett i Herren din Guds øyne.

when you shall listen to the voice of Yahweh your God, to keep all his commandments which I command you this day, to do that which is right in the eyes of Yahweh your God.
