1 Herrens ord kom til meg, og sa:

The word of Yahweh came to me, saying,

2 Menneskesønn, fortell en gåte og fremfør en lignelse til Israels hus.

Son of man, put forth a riddle, and speak a parable to the house of Israel;

3 Og si: Så sier Herren Gud: En stor ørn med store vinger og lange fjær, full av fjær med mange farger, kom til Libanon og tok toppen av sedertreet.

and say, Thus says the Lord Yahweh: A great eagle with great wings and long feathers, full of feathers, which had various colors, came to Lebanon, and took the top of the cedar:

4 Den brøt av den øverste toppen av de unge kvistene og bar den til et handelsland; den satte den i en handelsby.

he cropped off the topmost of the young twigs of it, and carried it to a land of traffic; he set it in a city of merchants.

5 Den tok også av frøet fra landet og plantet det i fruktbar jord; den plasserte det ved mange vann og vokste det som et piletre.

He took also of the seed of the land, and planted it in a fruitful soil; he placed it beside many waters; he set it as a willow tree.

6 Den vokste og ble en utbredt vinranke av lav vekst, hvis greiner vendte mot den, og dens røtter var under den: slik ble den en vinranke som bar greiner og skjøt skudd.

It grew, and became a spreading vine of low stature, whose branches turned toward him, and the roots of it were under him: so it became a vine, and brought forth branches, and shot forth sprigs.

7 Det var også en annen stor ørn med store vinger og mange fjær, og se, denne vinranken bøyde sine røtter mot den og skjøt sine greiner mot den fra bedene der den var plantet, for at den skulle kunne vanne den.

There was also another great eagle with great wings and many feathers: and, behold, this vine did bend its roots toward him, and shot forth its branches toward him, from the beds of its plantation, that he might water it.

8 Den var plantet i god jord ved mange vann, for at den skulle bære greiner og bære frukt, for at den skulle bli en vakker vinranke.

It was planted in a good soil by many waters, that it might bring forth branches, and that it might bear fruit, that it might be a goodly vine.

9 Si derfor: Så sier Herren Gud: Skal den blomstre? Vil den ikke bli dratt opp ved røttene, og dens frukt bli kuttet av, slik at den visner; skal ikke alle dens friske blader visne? Og ingen sterk arm eller stort folk kan løfte den fra dens røtter.

Say you, Thus says the Lord Yahweh: Shall it prosper? shall he not pull up the roots of it, and cut off the fruit of it, that it may wither; that all its fresh springing leaves may wither? and not by a strong arm or much people can it be raised from the roots of it.

10 Se, den er plantet, skal den blomstre? Vil den ikke visne fullstendig når østvinden treffer den? Den vil visne der den vokste.

Yes, behold, being planted, shall it prosper? shall it not utterly wither, when the east wind touches it? it shall wither in the beds where it grew.

11 Og Herrens ord kom til meg og sa:

Moreover the word of Yahweh came to me, saying,

12 Si til det opprørske huset: Forstår dere ikke hva dette betyr? Si til dem: Se, Babels konge kom til Jerusalem og tok dets konge og dets fyrster og førte dem til Babylon.

Say now to the rebellious house, Don't you know what these things mean? tell them, Behold, the king of Babylon came to Jerusalem, and took the king of it, and the princes of it, and brought them to him to Babylon:

13 Og han tok av det kongelige frøet og inngikk en pakt med ham; han plasserte ham under ed og tok bort de mektige i landet;

and he took of the seed royal, and made a covenant with him; he also brought him under an oath, and took away the mighty of the land;

14 for at riket skulle være svakt, slik at det ikke kunne heve seg opp, men at det kunne stå ved å holde hans pakt.

that the kingdom might be base, that it might not lift itself up, but that by keeping his covenant it might stand.

15 Men han gjorde opprør mot ham ved å sende sine sendebud til Egypt for å få hester og mye folk. Skal han lykkes? Kan han slippe unna som gjør slike ting? Kan han bryte pakten og likevel slippe unna?

But he rebelled against him in sending his ambassadors into Egypt, that they might give him horses and much people. Shall he prosper? shall he escape who does such things? shall he break the covenant, and yet escape?

16 Så sant jeg lever, sier Herren Gud: Sannelig, der hvor kongen bor som gjorde ham til konge, hvis ed han har foraktet, og hvis pakt han har brutt, der, midt i Babylon, skal han dø.

As I live, says the Lord Yahweh, surely in the place where the king dwells who made him king, whose oath he despised, and whose covenant he broke, even with him in the midst of Babylon he shall die.

17 Farao skal ikke hjelpe ham med sin mektige hær og store skare i krigen, når de bygger murer og oppfører festninger for å avskjære mange.

Neither shall Pharaoh with his mighty army and great company help him in the war, when they cast up mounds and build forts, to cut off many persons.

18 For han har foraktet eden ved å bryte pakten; og se, han ga sin hånd, og likevel har han gjort alt dette; han skal ikke slippe unna.

For he has despised the oath by breaking the covenant; and behold, he had given his hand, and yet has done all these things; he shall not escape.

19 Derfor sier Herren Gud: Så sant jeg lever, visselig, min ed som han har foraktet, og min pakt som han har brutt, vil jeg føre over hans eget hode.

Therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh: As I live, surely my oath that he has despised, and my covenant that he has broken, I will even bring it on his own head.

20 Jeg vil spre mitt garn over ham, og han skal fanges i min felle, og jeg vil føre ham til Babylon og straffe ham der for hans svik mot meg.

I will spread my net on him, and he shall be taken in my snare, and I will bring him to Babylon, and will enter into judgment with him there for his trespass that he has trespassed against me.

21 Alle hans flyktninger i alle hans skarer skal falle for sverdet, og de som er igjen skal spres for hver vind; og dere skal kjenne at jeg, Herren, har talt.

All his fugitives in all his bands shall fall by the sword, and those who remain shall be scattered toward every wind: and you shall know that I, Yahweh, have spoken it.

22 Så sier Herren Gud: Jeg vil også ta av den høye toppen av sedertreet, og jeg vil sette det; jeg vil skjære av en øm gren fra dets øverste unge kvister, og jeg vil plante det på et høyt og stolt fjell.

Thus says the Lord Yahweh: I will also take of the lofty top of the cedar, and will set it; I will crop off from the topmost of its young twigs a tender one, and I will plant it on a high and lofty mountain:

23 På fjellet i Israels høyde vil jeg plante det; og det skal bære greiner, og bære frukt, og bli en vakker seder; og under det skal alle fugler av enhver art bo; i skyggen av grenene skal de bo.

in the mountain of the height of Israel will I plant it; and it shall bring forth boughs, and bear fruit, and be a goodly cedar: and under it shall dwell all birds of every wing; in the shade of the branches of it shall they dwell.

24 Alle markens trær skal vite at jeg, Herren, har brakt den høye tre ned, har hevet den lave tre opp, har tørket opp det grønne tre, og har fått det tørre tre til å blomstre; jeg, Herren, har talt og gjort det.

All the trees of the field shall know that I, Yahweh, have brought down the high tree, have exalted the low tree, have dried up the green tree, and have made the dry tree to flourish; I, Yahweh, have spoken and have done it.
