1 Abram dro opp fra Egypt: han og hans kone, alt han eide, og Lot med ham, til Negev.

Abram went up out of Egypt: he, his wife, all that he had, and Lot with him, into the South.

2 Abram var svært rik på buskap, sølv og gull.

Abram was very rich in cattle, in silver, and in gold.

3 Han dro fra Negev til Betel, til det stedet hvor hans telt hadde stått i begynnelsen, mellom Betel og Ai,

He went on his journeys from the South even to Bethel, to the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Ai,

4 til stedet ved alteret som han hadde bygd der først. Der påkalte Abram HERRENS navn.

to the place of the altar, which he had made there at the first. There Abram called on the name of Yahweh.

5 Også Lot, som dro med Abram, hadde sauer, storfe og telt.

Lot also, who went with Abram, had flocks, and herds, and tents.

6 Landet kunne ikke fø dem begge, for deres eiendeler var for store til at de kunne bo sammen.

The land was not able to bear them, that they might live together: for their substance was great, so that they could not live together.

7 Det oppsto strid mellom Abrams gjetere og Lots gjetere. Kanaanittene og perisittene bodde også da i landet.

There was a strife between the herdsmen of Abram's cattle and the herdsmen of Lot's cattle: and the Canaanite and the Perizzite lived then in the land.

8 Abram sa til Lot: "Vær så snill, la det ikke være strid mellom meg og deg, og mellom mine gjetere og dine gjetere; for vi er slektninger.

Abram said to Lot, "Please, let there be no strife between me and you, and between my herdsmen and your herdsmen; for we are relatives.

9 Hele landet ligger foran deg. Skill deg fra meg! Hvis du går mot venstre, vil jeg gå mot høyre. Eller hvis du går mot høyre, vil jeg gå mot venstre."

Isn't the whole land before you? Please separate yourself from me. If you go to the left hand, then I will go to the right. Or if you go to the right hand, then I will go to the left."

10 Lot løftet blikket og så hele Jordan-dalen, som var godt vannet overalt, før HERREN ødela Sodoma og Gomorra, som Herrens hage, som landet Egypt, når du drar til Soar.

Lot lifted up his eyes, and saw all the plain of the Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before Yahweh destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, like the garden of Yahweh, like the land of Egypt, as you go to Zoar.

11 Lot valgte hele Jordan-dalen for seg selv. Lot dro østover, og de skiltes fra hverandre.

So Lot chose the Plain of the Jordan for himself. Lot traveled east, and they separated themselves the one from the other.

12 Abram bodde i Kanaans land, og Lot bodde i byene på sletten og flyttet sine telt nær Sodoma.

Abram lived in the land of Canaan, and Lot lived in the cities of the plain, and moved his tent as far as Sodom.

13 Men mennene i Sodoma var meget onde og syndet grovt mot HERREN.

Now the men of Sodom were exceedingly wicked and sinners against Yahweh.

14 HERREN sa til Abram, etter at Lot hadde skilt seg fra ham: "Løft blikket nå, og se fra det stedet du er, mot nord og sør og øst og vest,

Yahweh said to Abram, after Lot was separated from him, "Now, lift up your eyes, and look from the place where you are, northward and southward and eastward and westward,

15 for hele landet som du ser, vil jeg gi deg og din ætt for alltid.

for all the land which you see, I will give to you, and to your offspring forever.

16 Jeg vil gjøre din ætt som jordens støv, slik at hvis noen kan telle støvet på jorden, skal din ætt også kunne telles.

I will make your offspring as the dust of the earth, so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then your seed may also be numbered.

17 Stå opp og gå gjennom landet, på dets lengde og bredde; for jeg vil gi det til deg."

Arise, walk through the land in the length of it and in the breadth of it; for I will give it to you."

18 Abram flyttet sine telt og kom til Mamres terebinter i Hebron, og der bygde han et alter for HERREN.

Abram moved his tent, and came and lived by the oaks of Mamre, which are in Hebron, and built an altar there to Yahweh.
