1 Det var hungersnød i landet, foruten den første hungersnøden som hadde vært i Abrahams dager. Isak dro til Abimelek, kongen av filisterne, til Gerar.

There was a famine in the land, besides the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. Isaac went to Abimelech king of the Philistines, to Gerar.

2 Herren viste seg for ham og sa: «Dra ikke ned til Egypt. Bli boende i det landet jeg vil vise deg.

Yahweh appeared to him, and said, "Don't go down into Egypt. Dwell in the land which I will tell you of.

3 Bo som innflytter i dette landet, så vil jeg være med deg og velsigne deg. For til deg og din ætt vil jeg gi alle disse landene, og jeg vil stadfeste den eden jeg sverget til Abraham, din far.

Sojourn in this land, and I will be with you, and will bless you. For to you, and to your seed, I will give all these lands, and I will establish the oath which I swore to Abraham your father.

4 Jeg vil gjøre din ætt tallrik som stjernene på himmelen, og gi din ætt alle disse landene. Og i din ætt skal alle jordens folkeslag bli velsignet,

I will multiply your seed as the stars of the sky, and will give to your seed all these lands. In your seed will all the nations of the earth be blessed,

5 fordi Abraham adlød min røst og holdt mine befalinger, mine bud, mine forskrifter, og mine lover.»

because Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws."

6 Isak ble boende i Gerar.

Isaac lived in Gerar.

7 Mennene fra stedet spurte ham om hans kone. Han sa: «Hun er min søster,» for han var redd for å si: «Min kone,» da han tenkte at mennene fra stedet kunne drepe ham for Rebekka, fordi hun var vakker å se på.

The men of the place asked him about his wife. He said, "She is my sister," for he was afraid to say, "My wife," lest, he thought, the men of the place might kill me for Rebekah, because she was beautiful to look on.

8 Det skjedde, da han hadde vært der lenge, at Abimelek, kongen av filisterne, så ut av et vindu og fikk øye på Isak som lekte med Rebekka, hans kone.

It happened, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out at a window, and saw, and, behold, Isaac was caressing Rebekah, his wife.

9 Abimelek kalte på Isak og sa: «Sannelig, hun er din kone. Hvorfor sa du: 'Hun er min søster?'» Isak svarte ham: «Fordi jeg tenkte at jeg kunne dø på grunn av henne.»

Abimelech called Isaac, and said, "Behold, surely she is your wife. Why did you say, 'She is my sister?'" Isaac said to him, "Because I said, 'Lest I die because of her.'"

10 Abimelek sa: «Hva er det du har gjort mot oss? En av folkene kunne lett ha legget seg med din kone, og du ville ha ført skyld over oss!»

Abimelech said, "What is this you have done to us? One of the people might easily have lain with your wife, and you would have brought guilt on us!"

11 Abimelek ga alle folkene ordre og sa: «Den som rører denne mannen eller hans kone, skal sannelig bli drept.»

Abimelech charged all the people, saying, "He who touches this man or his wife will surely be put to death."

12 Isak sådde i det landet og fikk i det samme året hundre ganger det han hadde sådd. Herren velsignet ham.

Isaac sowed in that land, and reaped in the same year one hundred times what he planted. Yahweh blessed him.

13 Mannen ble mektig, og ble stadig mektigere inntil han ble meget mektig.

The man grew great, and grew more and more until he became very great.

14 Han hadde flokk av sauer, flokker av kyr, og mange tjenere. Filisterne misunte ham.

He had possessions of flocks, possessions of herds, and a great household. The Philistines envied him.

15 Nå hadde filisternes folk tilstoppet alle brønnene som hans fars tjenere hadde gravd i Abrahams, hans fars, dager, og fylt dem med jord.

Now all the wells which his father's servants had dug in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines had stopped, and filled with earth.

16 Abimelek sa til Isak: «Dra bort fra oss, for du har blitt mye sterkere enn oss.»

Abimelech said to Isaac, "Go from us, for you are much mightier than we."

17 Isak dro fra stedet, slo leir i Gerar-dalen og bodde der.

Isaac departed from there, encamped in the valley of Gerar, and lived there.

18 Isak gravde opp på nytt de brønnene med vann, som de hadde gravd i Abrahams, hans fars, dager. For filisterne hadde tilstoppet dem etter Abrahams død. Han kalte dem med de navnene hans far hadde gitt dem.

Isaac dug again the wells of water, which they had dug in the days of Abraham his father. For the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham. He called their names after the names by which his father had called them.

19 Isaks tjenere gravde i dalen og fant der en brønn med springvann.

Isaac's servants dug in the valley, and found there a well of springing water.

20 Men hyrdene fra Gerar trettet med Isaks hyrder og sa: «Vannet er vårt.» Han kalte brønnen Esek, fordi de trettet med ham.

The herdsmen of Gerar argued with Isaac's herdsmen, saying, "The water is ours." He called the name of the well Esek, because they contended with him.

21 De gravde en annen brønn, og de trettet om den også. Han kalte den Sitna.

They dug another well, and they argued over that, also. He called the name of it Sitnah.

22 Han dro videre derifra og gravde en annen brønn. Den trettet de ikke om. Han kalte den Rehobot, og sa: «For nå har Herren gitt oss rom, og vi skal være fruktbare i landet.»

He left that place, and dug another well. They didn't argue over that one. He called it Rehoboth. He said, "For now Yahweh has made room for us, and we will be fruitful in the land."

23 Han dro opp derifra til Be'er-Sjeba.

He went up from there to Beersheba.

24 Herren viste seg for ham den natten og sa: «Jeg er Abrahams Gud, din far. Frykt ikke, for jeg er med deg. Jeg vil velsigne deg og gjøre din ætt tallrik for min tjener Abrahams skyld.»

Yahweh appeared to him the same night, and said, "I am the God of Abraham your father. Don't be afraid, for I am with you, and will bless you, and multiply your seed for my servant Abraham's sake."

25 Han bygde et alter der, påkalte Herrens navn, slo opp teltet sitt der, og Isaks tjenere gravde en brønn.

He built an altar there, and called on the name of Yahweh, and pitched his tent there. There Isaac's servants dug a well.

26 Da kom Abimelek til ham fra Gerar sammen med Ahussat, sin venn, og Pikol, hærføreren hans.

Then Abimelech went to him from Gerar, and Ahuzzath his friend, and Phicol the captain of his host.

27 Isak sa til dem: «Hvorfor kommer dere til meg, når dere hater meg og har sendt meg bort fra dere?»

Isaac said to them, "Why have you come to me, since you hate me, and have sent me away from you?"

28 De svarte: «Vi så tydelig at Herren var med deg. Derfor sa vi: 'La det nå være en ed mellom oss, mellom oss og deg, og la oss inngå en pakt med deg,

They said, "We saw plainly that Yahweh was with you. We said, 'Let there now be an oath between us, even between us and you, and let us make a covenant with you,

29 at du ikke vil gjøre oss noe ondt, slik som vi ikke har rørt deg, og slik vi bare har gjort deg godt, og sendt deg bort i fred.' Nå er du Herrens velsignede.»

that you will do us no harm, as we have not touched you, and as we have done to you nothing but good, and have sent you away in peace.' You are now the blessed of Yahweh."

30 Han laget et gjestebud for dem, og de spiste og drakk.

He made them a feast, and they ate and drink.

31 De sto opp om morgenen og sverget gjensidig en ed. Isak lot dem dra, og de dro fra ham i fred.

They rose up some time in the morning, and swore one to another. Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace.

32 Samme dagen kom Isaks tjenere og fortalte ham om brønnen de hadde gravd, og sa til ham: «Vi har funnet vann.»

It happened the same day, that Isaac's servants came, and told him concerning the well which they had dug, and said to him, "We have found water."

33 Han kalte den Sjiba. Derfor heter byen Be'er-Sjeba den dag i dag.

He called it Shibah.{Shibah means "oath" or "seven."} Therefore the name of the city is Beersheba{Beersheba means "well of the oath" or "well of the seven"} to this day.

34 Da Esau var førti år gammel, tok han til kone Judit, datter av Beerietitten, og Basmat, datter av Elon, hittitten.

When Esau was forty years old, he took as wife Judith, the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath, the daughter of Elon the Hittite.

35 De var til stor sorg for Isak og Rebekka.

They grieved Isaac and Rebekah's spirits.
