1 Jakob bodde i landet hvor hans far hadde reist, i Kanaans land.

Jacob lived in the land of his father's travels, in the land of Canaan.

2 Dette er historien om Jakobs etterkommere. Josef var sytten år gammel og gjetet sauene sammen med brødrene sine. Han var en gutt med sønnene til Bilha og Silpa, hans fars koner. Josef tok med en ond rapport om dem til sin far.

This is the history of the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brothers. He was a boy with the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, his father's wives. Joseph brought an evil report of them to their father.

3 Israel elsket Josef mer enn alle sine andre barn, fordi han var sønnen som ble født i hans alderdom, og han laget en flerfarget kjortel til ham.

Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age, and he made him a coat of many colors.

4 Hans brødre så at deres far elsket ham mer enn alle hans brødre, og de hatet ham og kunne ikke snakke vennlig til ham.

His brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, and they hated him, and couldn't speak peaceably to him.

5 Josef drømte en drøm, og han fortalte den til brødrene sine, og de hatet ham enda mer.

Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it to his brothers, and they hated him all the more.

6 Han sa til dem: "Hør på denne drømmen som jeg har drømt:

He said to them, "Please hear this dream which I have dreamed:

7 Se, vi bandt kornbånd ute på marken, og mitt kornbånd reiste seg og sto oppreist, og deres kornbånd samlet seg rundt og bøyde seg for mitt kornbånd."

for, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and behold, my sheaf arose and also stood upright; and behold, your sheaves came around, and bowed down to my sheaf."

8 Hans brødre sa til ham: "Skal du virkelig herske over oss? Skal du virkelig ha herredømme over oss?" De hatet ham enda mer for hans drømmer og for hans ord.

His brothers said to him, "Will you indeed reign over us? Or will you indeed have dominion over us?" They hated him all the more for his dreams and for his words.

9 Han drømte enda en drøm, og fortalte den til brødrene sine, og sa: "Se, jeg har drømt enda en drøm: Solen og månen og elleve stjerner bøyde seg for meg."

He dreamed yet another dream, and told it to his brothers, and said, "Behold, I have dreamed yet another dream: and behold, the sun and the moon and eleven stars bowed down to me."

10 Han fortalte den til sin far og sine brødre. Hans far irettesatte ham og sa til ham: "Hva er denne drømmen som du har drømt? Skal jeg, din mor og dine brødre faktisk komme og bøye oss til jorden for deg?"

He told it to his father and to his brothers. His father rebuked him, and said to him, "What is this dream that you have dreamed? Will I and your mother and your brothers indeed come to bow ourselves down to you to the earth?"

11 Hans brødre misunte ham, men hans far bevarte dette i sitt hjerte.

His brothers envied him; but his father kept this saying in mind.

12 Hans brødre gikk for å gjete sin fars sauer i Sikem.

His brothers went to feed their father's flock in Shechem.

13 Israel sa til Josef: "Er ikke dine brødre i Sikem og gjeter? Kom, og jeg vil sende deg til dem." Han sa til ham: "Her er jeg."

Israel said to Joseph, "Aren't your brothers feeding the flock in Shechem? Come, and I will send you to them." He said to him, "Here I am."

14 Han sa til ham: "Gå nå, se hvordan det står til med dine brødre, og hvordan det står til med flokken; og kom tilbake og fortell meg." Så sendte han ham fra Hebrons dal, og han kom til Sikem.

He said to him, "Go now, see whether it is well with your brothers, and well with the flock; and bring me word again." So he sent him out of the valley of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.

15 En mann fant ham, og se, han vandret omkring på marken. Mannen spurte ham: "Hva leter du etter?"

A certain man found him, and behold, he was wandering in the field: and the man asked him, saying, "What are you looking for?"

16 Han sa: "Jeg leter etter mine brødre. Kan du fortelle meg hvor de gjeter flokken?"

He said, "I am looking for my brothers. Tell me, please, where they are feeding the flock."

17 Mannen sa: "De har dratt herfra, for jeg hørte dem si: 'La oss gå til Dotan.'" Josef gikk etter sine brødre og fant dem i Dotan.

The man said, "They have left here, for I heard them say, 'Let us go to Dothan.'" Joseph went after his brothers, and found them in Dothan.

18 De så ham på lang avstand, og før han kom nær til dem, satte de seg fore å drepe ham.

They saw him afar off, and before he came near to them, they conspired against him to kill him.

19 De sa til hverandre: "Se, der kommer den drømmeren.

They said one to another, "Behold, this dreamer comes.

20 Kom nå, la oss drepe ham og kaste ham i en av disse brønnene, og vi vil si: 'Et ondt dyr har fortært ham.' Så ser vi hva det blir av drømmene hans."

Come now therefore, and let's kill him, and cast him into one of the pits, and we will say, 'An evil animal has devoured him.' We will see what will become of his dreams."

21 Ruben hørte det, og reddet ham fra deres hånd, og sa: "La oss ikke ta hans liv."

Reuben heard it, and delivered him out of their hand, and said, "Let's not take his life."

22 Ruben sa til dem: "Spill ikke blod. Kast ham i denne brønnen i ødemarken, men legg ikke hånd på ham" -- for å redde ham fra deres hånd og bringe ham tilbake til sin far.

Reuben said to them, "Shed no blood. Throw him into this pit that is in the wilderness, but lay no hand on him"-- that he might deliver him out of their hand, to restore him to his father.

23 Da Josef kom til sine brødre, rev de av ham kjortelen, den flerfargede kjortelen som han hadde på seg;

It happened, when Joseph came to his brothers, that they stripped Joseph of his coat, the coat of many colors that was on him;

24 og de tok ham og kastet ham i en brønn. Brønnen var tom, det var ikke vann i den.

and they took him, and threw him into the pit. The pit was empty. There was no water in it.

25 De satte seg ned for å spise brød, og da de løftet opp øynene, så de en karavane av ismaelitter som kom fra Gilead, med kamelene fylt med krydder, balsam og myrra, som de skulle frakte til Egypt.

They sat down to eat bread, and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and saw a caravan of Ishmaelites was coming from Gilead, with their camels bearing spices and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt.

26 Juda sa til sine brødre: "Hva gagner det oss om vi dreper vår bror og skjuler hans blod?

Judah said to his brothers, "What profit is it if we kill our brother and conceal his blood?

27 Kom, la oss selge ham til ismaelittene, og ikke legge hånd på ham; for han er vår bror, vårt kjød." Hans brødre hørte på ham.

Come, and let's sell him to the Ishmaelites, and not let our hand be on him; for he is our brother, our flesh." His brothers listened to him.

28 Midianittene, som var handelsmenn, kom forbi, og de dro Josef opp av brønnen og solgte ham til ismaelittene for tjue sølvstykker. De tok Josef med til Egypt.

Midianites who were merchants passed by, and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver. They brought Joseph into Egypt.

29 Ruben vendte tilbake til brønnen; og da han så at Josef ikke var der, rev han klærne sine.

Reuben returned to the pit; and saw that Joseph wasn't in the pit; and he tore his clothes.

30 Han vendte tilbake til sine brødre og sa: "Gutten er borte; og jeg, hvor skal jeg gå?"

He returned to his brothers, and said, "The child is no more; and I, where will I go?"

31 De tok Josefs kjortel, drepte en bukk og dyppet kjortelen i blodet.

They took Joseph's coat, and killed a male goat, and dipped the coat in the blood.

32 De sendte den flerfargede kjortelen og brakte den til deres far, og sa: "Vi har funnet dette. Se om det er din sønns kjortel eller ikke."

They took the coat of many colors, and they brought it to their father, and said, "We have found this. Examine it, now, whether it is your son's coat or not."

33 Han kjente den igjen, og sa: "Det er min sønns kjortel. Et ondt dyr har fortært ham. Josef er uten tvil revet i stykker."

He recognized it, and said, "It is my son's coat. An evil animal has devoured him. Joseph is without doubt torn in pieces."

34 Jakob rev sine klær, kledde seg i sekk og sørget over sin sønn i mange dager.

Jacob tore his clothes, and put sackcloth on his loins, and mourned for his son many days.

35 Alle hans sønner og alle hans døtre kom for å trøste ham, men han nektet å la seg trøste. Han sa: "For jeg vil gå sørgende ned til min sønn i Sheol." Hans far gråt for ham.

All his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted. He said, "For I will go down to Sheol{Sheol is the place of the dead or the grave.} to my son mourning." His father wept for him.

36 Midianittene solgte ham i Egypt til Potifar, en offiser hos farao, høvding for livvakten.

The Midianites sold him into Egypt to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh's, the captain of the guard.
