1 Så gikk Josef til farao og sa: "Min far og mine brødre, med flokkene sine, buskapene og alt det de eier, har kommet fra Kanaans land; og se, de er i landet Goshen."

Then Joseph went in and told Pharaoh, and said, "My father and my brothers, with their flocks, their herds, and all that they own, have come out of the land of Canaan; and, behold, they are in the land of Goshen."

2 Blant sine brødre tok han fem menn og presenterte dem for farao.

From among his brothers he took five men, and presented them to Pharaoh.

3 Farao spurte brødrene: "Hva er deres yrke?" De svarte farao: "Dine tjenere er gjetere, både vi og våre fedre."

Pharaoh said to his brothers, "What is your occupation?" They said to Pharaoh, "Your servants are shepherds, both we, and our fathers."

4 De sa til farao: "Vi har kommet for å bo som fremmede i landet, for det er ingen beite for dine tjeneres flokker. Hungersnøden er nemlig stor i Kanaans land. Vi ber deg derfor, la oss bo i landet Goshen."

They said to Pharaoh, "We have come to live as foreigners in the land, for there is no pasture for your servants' flocks. For the famine is severe in the land of Canaan. Now therefore, please let your servants dwell in the land of Goshen."

5 Farao sa til Josef: "Din far og dine brødre er kommet til deg.

Pharaoh spoke to Joseph, saying, "Your father and your brothers have come to you.

6 Landet Egypt ligger foran deg. La din far og dine brødre bo i det beste av landet. La dem bo i landet Goshen. Hvis du kjenner noen dyktige menn blant dem, sett dem over min buskap."

The land of Egypt is before you. Make your father and your brothers dwell in the best of the land. Let them dwell in the land of Goshen. If you know any able men among them, then put them in charge of my cattle."

7 Josef førte Jakob, sin far, fram for farao, og Jakob velsignet farao.

Joseph brought in Jacob, his father, and set him before Pharaoh, and Jacob blessed Pharaoh.

8 Farao spurte Jakob: "Hvor mange er årene av ditt liv?"

Pharaoh said to Jacob, "How many are the days of the years of your life?"

9 Jakob svarte farao: "Årene av mitt utlendighets liv er hundre og tretti år. Få og vonde har årene av mitt liv vært, og de har ikke nådd opp til årene av mitt fedres liv i deres utlendighet."

Jacob said to Pharaoh, "The days of the years of my pilgrimage are one hundred thirty years. Few and evil have been the days of the years of my life, and they have not attained to the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimage."

10 Jakob velsignet farao og gikk ut fra faraos nærvær.

Jacob blessed Pharaoh, and went out from the presence of Pharaoh.

11 Josef bosatte sin far og sine brødre, og ga dem en eiendom i Egypts land, i det beste av landet, i landet Ramses, som farao hadde befalt.

Joseph placed his father and his brothers, and gave them a possession in the land of Egypt, in the best of the land, in the land of Rameses, as Pharaoh had commanded.

12 Josef forsørget sin far, sine brødre og hele sin fars husstand med brød, etter deres familier.

Joseph nourished his father, his brothers, and all of his father's household, with bread, according to their families.

13 Det var ikke brød i hele landet; for hungersnøden var svært stor, så Egyptens land og Kanaans land svekket seg på grunn av hungersnøden.

There was no bread in all the land; for the famine was very severe, so that the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan fainted by reason of the famine.

14 Josef samlet opp alle penger som fantes i Egyptens land og Kanaans land for kornet de kjøpte, og Josef førte pengene inn i faraos hus.

Joseph gathered up all the money that was found in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, for the grain which they bought: and Joseph brought the money into Pharaoh's house.

15 Da alle pengene var brukt opp i Egyptens land og Kanaans land, kom alle egypterne til Josef og sa: "Gi oss brød, hvorfor skal vi dø i ditt nærvær, for våre penger har tatt slutt?"

When the money was all spent in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came to Joseph, and said, "Give us bread, for why should we die in your presence? For our money fails."

16 Josef sa: "Gi deres buskap, og jeg vil gi dere mat for buskapen om pengene tar slutt."

Joseph said, "Give your cattle; and I will give you food for your cattle, if money fails."

17 De brakte deres buskap til Josef, og Josef ga dem brød i bytte for hestene, småfeet, storfeet og eslene: og han forsynte dem med brød i bytte for all deres buskap dette året.

They brought their cattle to Joseph, and Joseph gave them bread in exchange for the horses, and for the flocks, and for the herds, and for the donkeys: and he fed them with bread in exchange for all their cattle for that year.

18 Da året var omme, kom de til ham det andre året og sa til ham: "Vi skjuler ikke for vår herre at våre penger er brukt opp, og dyrene tilhører vår herre. Det er ingenting igjen for vår herres øyne, bortsett fra våre kropper og våre landområder.

When that year was ended, they came to him the second year, and said to him, "We will not hide from my lord how our money is all spent, and the herds of cattle are my lord's. There is nothing left in the sight of my lord, but our bodies, and our lands.

19 Hvorfor skal vi dø foran dine øyne, både vi og vårt land? Kjøp oss og vårt land for brød, så skal vi og vårt land være faraos tjenere. Gi oss såkorn, så vi kan leve og ikke dø, og landet ikke skal bli øde."

Why should we die before your eyes, both we and our land? Buy us and our land for bread, and we and our land will be servants to Pharaoh. Give us seed, that we may live, and not die, and that the land won't be desolate."

20 Slik kjøpte Josef hele landet Egypt for farao, for egypterne solgte alle sine åkre, fordi hungersnøden var så hard over dem, og landet ble faraos.

So Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh, for the Egyptians sold every man his field, because the famine was severe on them, and the land became Pharaoh's.

21 Når det gjelder folket, flyttet han dem til byene fra den ene enden av Egyptens grenser til den andre enden av landet.

As for the people, he moved them to the cities from one end of the border of Egypt even to the other end of it.

22 Kun prestenes land kjøpte han ikke, for prestene hadde en tildeling fra farao, og de levde av sin tildeling som farao ga dem. Derfor solgte de ikke sitt land.

Only he didn't buy the land of the priests, for the priests had a portion from Pharaoh, and ate their portion which Pharaoh gave them. That is why they didn't sell their land.

23 Da sa Josef til folket: "Se, jeg har kjøpt dere og deres land i dag for farao. Se, her er såkorn til dere, og dere skal så på landet.

Then Joseph said to the people, "Behold, I have bought you and your land today for Pharaoh. Behold, here is seed for you, and you shall sow the land.

24 Det skal skje ved innhøstingen at dere skal gi en femtedel til farao, og fire deler skal være deres egen, som såkorn til åkrene, mat til dere selv, husholdningen deres og mat til de små barna."

It will happen at the harvests, that you shall give a fifth to Pharaoh, and four parts will be your own, for seed of the field, for your food, for them of your households, and for food for your little ones."

25 De sa: "Du har reddet våre liv! La oss finne nåde i vår herres øyne, og vi skal være faraos tjenere."

They said, "You have saved our lives! Let us find favor in the sight of my lord, and we will be Pharaoh's servants."

26 Josef gjorde det til en lov for Egypts land som fortsatt gjelder i dag, at farao skulle ha en femtedel. Bare prestenes land ble ikke faraos.

Joseph made it a statute concerning the land of Egypt to this day, that Pharaoh should have the fifth. Only the land of the priests alone didn't become Pharaoh's.

27 Israel bodde i Egypts land, i landet Goshen; de fikk eiendom der, var fruktbare og ble svært mangfoldige.

Israel lived in the land of Egypt, in the land of Goshen; and they got themselves possessions therein, and were fruitful, and multiplied exceedingly.

28 Jakob levde i Egypts land i sytten år. Så Jakobs levetid, årene av hans liv, var hundre og førtisju år.

Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years. So the days of Jacob, the years of his life, were one hundred forty-seven years.

29 Da tiden nærmet seg for Israel å dø, kalte han til seg sin sønn Josef og sa til ham: "Om jeg nå har funnet nåde i dine øyne, legg hånden under mitt lår og vis meg kjærlighet og troskap. Ikke begrav meg i Egypt.

The time drew near that Israel must die, and he called his son Joseph, and said to him, "If now I have found favor in your sight, please put your hand under my thigh, and deal kindly and truly with me. Please don't bury me in Egypt,

30 Men når jeg sover med mine fedre, skal du føre meg ut av Egypt og begrave meg i deres gravplass." Han svarte: "Jeg skal gjøre som du har sagt."

but when I sleep with my fathers, you shall carry me out of Egypt, and bury me in their burying place." He said, "I will do as you have said."

31 Han sa: "Sverg for meg," og han sverget for ham. Israel bøyde seg i takknemlighet ved sengegjerdet.

He said, "Swear to me," and he swore to him. Israel bowed himself on the bed's head.
