Dette er ordene i brevet som profeten Jeremia sendte fra Jerusalem til de gjenværende av de eldste blant fangene, til prestene, profetene og alt folket, som Nebukadnesar hadde ført bort i fangenskap fra Jerusalem til Babylon.

Now these are the words of the letter that Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem to the residue of the elders of the captivity, and to the priests, and to the prophets, and to all the people, whom Nebuchadnezzar had carried away captive from Jerusalem to Babylon,

(etter at Jekonja, kongen, dronningmoren, hoffmennene, fyrstene i Juda og Jerusalem, håndverkerne og smedene, var blitt ført bort fra Jerusalem),

(after that Jeconiah the king, and the queen-mother, and the eunuchs, [and] the princes of Judah and Jerusalem, and the craftsmen, and the smiths, were departed from Jerusalem),

ved Elasah, sønn av Sjafan, og Gemarja, sønn av Hilkia, (som Sidkia, kongen av Juda, hadde sendt til Babylon til Nebukadnesar, Babylons konge), med dette budskapet:

by the hand of Elasah the son of Shaphan, and Gemariah the son of Hilkiah, (whom Zedekiah king of Judah sent to Babylon to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon), saying,

Så sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud, Israels Gud, til alle de bortførte, som jeg har ført bort i fangenskap fra Jerusalem til Babylon:

Thus says Yahweh of Hosts, the God of Israel, to all the captivity, whom I have caused to be carried away captive from Jerusalem to Babylon:

Bygg hus og bo i dem; plant hager og spis deres frukt.

Build you houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them.

Ta koner og få sønner og døtre; ta koner til sønnene deres, og gi døtrene deres bort i ekteskap, så de kan føde sønner og døtre; bli mange der, og ikke mink i antall.

Take wives, and father sons and daughters; and take wives for your sons, and give your daughters to husbands, that they may bear sons and daughters; and multiply you there, and don't be diminished.

Søk fred for byen hvor jeg har ført dere bort i fangenskap, og be til Herren for den; for når byen har fred, får dere også fred.

Seek the peace of the city where I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray to Yahweh for it; for in the peace of it shall you have peace.

For så sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud, Israels Gud: La ikke profetene som er blant dere, og spåmennene, lure dere; lytt heller ikke til drømmene dere selv drømmer.

For thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel: Don't let your prophets who are in the midst of you, and your diviners, deceive you; neither listen you to your dreams which you cause to be dreamed.

For de profeterer falskt i mitt navn: Jeg har ikke sendt dem, sier Herren.

For they prophesy falsely to you in my name: I have not sent them, says Yahweh.

For så sier Herren: Når sytti år er gått for Babylon, vil jeg ta meg av dere og oppfylle mitt løfte om å føre dere tilbake til dette stedet.

For thus says Yahweh, After seventy years are accomplished for Babylon, I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place.

For jeg vet hvilke tanker jeg har om dere, sier Herren, tanker om fred og ikke om ulykke, for å gi dere framtid og håp.

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says Yahweh, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope in your latter end.

Dere skal påkalle meg, gå og be til meg, og jeg vil høre på dere.

You shall call on me, and you shall go and pray to me, and I will listen to you.

Dere skal søke meg, og finne meg, når dere søker meg av hele deres hjerte.

You shall seek me, and find me, when you shall search for me with all your heart.

Jeg vil la dere finne meg, sier Herren, og jeg vil føre dere tilbake fra fangenskap, og jeg vil samle dere fra alle nasjoner og fra alle steder jeg har drevet dere til, sier Herren; og jeg vil føre dere tilbake til det stedet jeg førte dere bort fra.

I will be found by you, says Yahweh, and I will turn again your captivity, and I will gather you from all the nations, and from all the places where I have driven you, says Yahweh; and I will bring you again to the place from where I caused you to be carried away captive.

Fordi dere har sagt: Herren har reist opp profeter for oss i Babylon;

Because you have said, Yahweh has raised us up prophets in Babylon;

så sier Herren om kongen som sitter på Davids trone, og om alle de som bor i denne byen, de av deres brødre som ikke gikk ut med dere i fangenskap;

thus says Yahweh concerning the king who sits on the throne of David, and concerning all the people who dwell in this city, your brothers who haven't gone forth with you into captivity;

så sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud: Se, jeg sender sverd, hungersnød og pest mot dem, og vil gjøre dem som ubrukelige fikener, så dårlige at de ikke kan spises.

thus says Yahweh of Hosts; Behold, I will send on them the sword, the famine, and the pestilence, and will make them like vile figs, that can't be eaten, they are so bad.

Jeg vil forfølge dem med sverd, hungersnød og pest, og gjøre dem til en skrekk og forbauselse, til hån og skjellsord blant alle folkeslagene hvor jeg har drevet dem bort;

I will pursue after them with the sword, with the famine, and with the pestilence, and will deliver them to be tossed back and forth among all the kingdoms of the earth, to be an object of horror, and an astonishment, and a hissing, and a reproach, among all the nations where I have driven them;

fordi de ikke lyttet til mine ord, sier Herren, som jeg sendte til dem gjennom tjenerne mine, profetene, gang på gang; men dere ville ikke høre, sier Herren.

because they have not listened to my words, says Yahweh, with which I sent to them my servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them; but you would not hear, says Yahweh.

Hør derfor Herrens ord, alle dere som er ført bort fra Jerusalem til Babylon.

Hear you therefore the word of Yahweh, all you of the captivity, whom I have sent away from Jerusalem to Babylon.

Så sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud, Israels Gud, om Akab, sønn av Kolaja, og om Sidkia, sønn av Maaseja, som profeterer løgner for dere i mitt navn: Se, jeg skal gi dem i hendene på Nebukadnesar, Babylons konge; og han skal drepe dem for deres øyne.

Thus says Yahweh of Hosts, the God of Israel, concerning Ahab the son of Kolaiah, and concerning Zedekiah the son of Maaseiah, who prophesy a lie to you in my name: Behold, I will deliver them into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon; and he shall kill them before your eyes;

Og på dem skal det sies en forbannelse av alle Juda-fangene i Babylon: «Herren gjøre deg som Sidkia og Akab, som Babylons konge brente i ilden.»

and of them shall be taken up a curse by all the captives of Judah who are in Babylon, saying, Yahweh make you like Zedekiah and like Ahab, whom the king of Babylon roasted in the fire;

For de har gjort en dårskap i Israel, og begått ekteskapsbrudd med naboenes koner, og talt falske ord i mitt navn, som jeg ikke har befalt dem; og jeg er den som vet, og er vitne, sier Herren.

because they have worked folly in Israel, and have committed adultery with their neighbors' wives, and have spoken words in my name falsely, which I didn't command them; and I am he who knows, and am witness, says Yahweh.

Om Sjemaja fra Nehelam skal du si følgende ord,

Concerning Shemaiah the Nehelamite you shall speak, saying,

Så sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud, Israels Gud: Fordi du har sendt brev i ditt navn til alt folket i Jerusalem, til Sefanja, sønn av Maaseja, presten, og til alle prestene, med følgende ord,

Thus speaks Yahweh of Hosts, the God of Israel, saying, Because you have sent letters in your own name to all the people who are at Jerusalem, and to Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah, the priest, and to all the priests, saying,

Herren har utpekt deg til prest i stedet for Jojada presten, for at det skal være oppsynsmenn i Herrens hus, som holder vakt over hver mann som er fra vettet og gjør seg selv til profet, slik at du setter ham i gapestokk og lenker.

Yahweh has made you priest in the place of Jehoiada the priest, that there may be officers in the house of Yahweh, for every man who is mad, and makes himself a prophet, that you should put him in the stocks and in shackles.

Hvorfor har du da ikke irettesatt Jeremia fra Anatot, som gjør seg selv til profet for dere,

Now therefore, why have you not rebuked Jeremiah of Anathoth, who makes himself a prophet to you,

fordi han har sendt bud til oss i Babylon og sagt: «Fangenskapet vil vare lenge; bygg hus og bo i dem; plant hager og spis deres frukt.»?

because he has sent to us in Babylon, saying, [The captivity] is long: build you houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them?

Sefanja, presten, leste dette brevet for ørene til profeten Jeremia.

Zephaniah the priest read this letter in the ears of Jeremiah the prophet.

Så kom Herrens ord til Jeremia, og sa:

Then came the word of Yahweh to Jeremiah, saying,

Send til alle fangene og si: Så sier Herren om Sjemaja fra Nehelam: Fordi Sjemaja har profetert for dere, uten at jeg har sendt ham, og han har fått dere til å stole på løgn;

Send to all them of the captivity, saying, Thus says Yahweh concerning Shemaiah the Nehelamite: Because Shemaiah has prophesied to you, and I didn't send him, and he has caused you to trust in a lie;

derfor sier Herren: Se, jeg vil straffe Sjemaja fra Nehelam og hans ætt; han skal ikke ha noen mann blant dette folket, og han skal ikke se det gode jeg vil gjøre for mitt folk, sier Herren, fordi han har talt opprør mot Herren.

therefore thus says Yahweh, Behold, I will punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite, and his seed; he shall not have a man to dwell among this people, neither shall he see the good that I will do to my people, says Yahweh, because he has spoken rebellion against Yahweh.
