1 Hele menigheten løftet sin stemme og ropte, og folket gråt den natten.

All the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night.

2 Alle Israels barn knurret mot Moses og mot Aron, og hele menigheten sa til dem: Hadde vi bare dødd i Egyptens land, eller her i ørkenen!

All the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron: and the whole congregation said to them, Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! or would that we had died in this wilderness!

3 Hvorfor fører Herren oss til dette landet for at vi skal falle for sverdet? Våre koner og små barn vil bli til bytte. Ville det ikke vært bedre for oss å vende tilbake til Egypt?

Why does Yahweh bring us to this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will be a prey: wouldn't it be better for us to return into Egypt?

4 Og de sa til hverandre: La oss utnevne en leder og vende tilbake til Egypt.

They said one to another, Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt.

5 Da falt Moses og Aron på sine ansikter for hele Israels barns menighet.

Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.

6 Josva, sønn av Nun, og Kaleb, sønn av Jefunne, som hadde vært blant dem som speidet landet, rev sine klær,

Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were of those who spied out the land, tore their clothes:

7 og talte til hele Israels barns menighet og sa: Landet vi dro gjennom for å speide, er et meget godt land.

and they spoke to all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying, The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceeding good land.

8 Hvis Herren gleder seg over oss, vil han føre oss inn i dette landet og gi det til oss, et land som flyter av melk og honning.

If Yahweh delight in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it to us; a land which flows with milk and honey.

9 Bare sett dere ikke opp mot Herren, og frykt ikke landets folk, for de er som brød for oss. Deres beskyttelse er tatt bort fra dem, og Herren er med oss. Frykt dem ikke.

Only don't rebel against Yahweh, neither fear the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defense is removed from over them, and Yahweh is with us: don't fear them.

10 Men hele menigheten truet med å steine dem. Da viste Herrens herlighet seg i sammenkomstens telt for alle Israels barn.

But all the congregation bade stone them with stones. The glory of Yahweh appeared in the tent of meeting to all the children of Israel.

11 Herren sa til Moses: Hvor lenge vil dette folket forakte meg? Og hvor lenge vil de ikke tro på meg, tross alle de tegn jeg har gjort blant dem?

Yahweh said to Moses, How long will this people despise me? and how long will they not believe in me, for all the signs which I have worked among them?

12 Jeg vil slå dem med pest og drive dem bort, og jeg vil gjøre deg til et folk større og sterkere enn de.

I will strike them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they.

13 Moses sa til Herren: Da vil egypterne høre om det, for du førte dette folket opp med din kraft fra blant dem.

Moses said to Yahweh, Then the Egyptians will hear it; for you brought up this people in your might from among them;

14 De vil fortelle det til innbyggerne i dette landet. De har hørt at du, Herren, er blant dette folket; at du, Herren, vises ansikt til ansikt, og at din sky står over dem, og at du går foran dem i en sky-søyle om dagen og en ild-søyle om natten.

and they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that you Yahweh are in the midst of this people; for you Yahweh are seen face to face, and your cloud stands over them, and you go before them, in a pillar of cloud by day, and in a pillar of fire by night.

15 Dreper du dette folket som én mann, vil da nasjonene som har hørt om ditt navn si:

Now if you shall kill this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of you will speak, saying,

16 Fordi Herren ikke var i stand til å føre dette folket inn i det landet han sverget å gi dem, har han drept dem i ørkenen.

Because Yahweh was not able to bring this people into the land which he swore to them, therefore he has slain them in the wilderness.

17 La derfor, vær så snill, kraften fra Herren bli stor, slik som du har talt og sagt:

Now please let the power of the Lord be great, according as you have spoken, saying,

18 Herren er sen til vrede og rik på miskunn, tilgir synd og troløshet; men han klarer ikke helt å frita [den skyldige], og straffer fedrenes synder på barna, til tredje og fjerde ledd.

Yahweh is slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, forgiving iniquity and disobedience; and that will by no means clear [the guilty], visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and on the fourth generation.

19 Tilgi dette folkets synd, vær så snill, i samsvar med din store miskunn, slik du har tilgitt dette folket fra Egypt helt til nå.

Pardon, Please, the iniquity of this people according to the greatness of your loving kindness, and according as you have forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.

20 Herren sa: Jeg har tilgitt etter ditt ord.

Yahweh said, I have pardoned according to your word:

21 Men så sant jeg lever, og så sant hele jorden skal fylles med Herrens herlighet,

but in very deed, as I live, and as all the earth shall be filled with the glory of Yahweh;

22 fordi alle disse menn som har sett min herlighet og mine tegn, som jeg gjorde i Egypt og i ørkenen, og likevel har fristet meg disse ti ganger og ikke hørt min røst,

because all those men who have seen my glory, and my signs, which I worked in Egypt and in the wilderness, yet have tempted me these ten times, and have not listened to my voice;

23 sannelig, de skal ikke se det landet som jeg sverget å gi deres fedre, og ingen av dem som foraktet meg skal se det.

surely they shall not see the land which I swore to their fathers, neither shall any of those who despised me see it:

24 Men min tjener Kaleb, fordi han hadde en annen ånd og har fulgt meg trofast, ham vil jeg føre inn i det landet han gikk inn i, og hans etterkommere skal ta det i eie.

but my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and has followed me fully, him will I bring into the land into which he went; and his seed shall possess it.

25 Amalekittene og kanaanittene bor i dalen. I morgen vend om og gå tilbake til ørkenen langs veien til Rødehavet.

Now the Amalekite and the Canaanite dwell in the valley: tomorrow turn you, and get you into the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea.

26 Herren talte til Moses og Aron, og sa:

Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,

27 Hvor lenge skal jeg tåle denne onde menigheten som knurrer mot meg? Jeg har hørt knurringen fra Israels barn, som de fører mot meg.

How long [shall I bear] with this evil congregation, that murmur against me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against me.

28 Si til dem: Så sant jeg lever, sier Herren, som dere har talt i mine ører, slik vil jeg gjøre mot dere.

Tell them, As I live, says Yahweh, surely as you have spoken in my ears, so will I do to you:

29 Deres døde kropper skal falle i denne ørkenen, og alle fra tjue år og oppover, som er talt blant dere, som har knurret mot meg,

your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness; and all who were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, who have murmured against me,

30 sannelig, dere skal ikke komme inn i det landet jeg sverget å gi dere, bortsett fra Kaleb, sønn av Jefunne, og Josva, sønn av Nun.

surely you shall not come into the land, concerning which I swore that I would make you dwell therein, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.

31 Men deres små barn, som dere sa ville bli til bytte, dem vil jeg føre inn, og de skal kjenne det landet dere har foraktet.

But your little ones, that you said should be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which you have rejected.

32 Men dere, deres døde kropper skal falle i denne ørkenen.

But as for you, your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness.

33 Deres barn skal vandre i ørkenen i førti år og bære med seg deres utroskap, inntil deres lik er borte i ørkenen.

Your children shall be wanderers in the wilderness forty years, and shall bear your prostitution, until your dead bodies be consumed in the wilderness.

34 Etter antallet av de dager dere speidet ut landet, førti dager, skal dere bære deres misgjerninger, førti år, et år for hver dag, og dere skal få kjenne min motstand.

After the number of the days in which you spied out the land, even forty days, for every day a year, shall you bear your iniquities, even forty years, and you shall know my alienation.

35 Jeg, Herren, har talt, sannelig, dette vil jeg gjøre med hele denne onde menigheten, som har samlet seg mot meg: i denne ørkenen skal de bli tilintetgjort, og der skal de dø.

I, Yahweh, have spoken, surely this will I do to all this evil congregation, who are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.

36 De menn som Moses sendte for å speide landet, som kom tilbake og fikk hele menigheten til å knurre mot ham ved å spre dårlig tale om landet,

The men, whom Moses sent to spy out the land, who returned, and made all the congregation to murmur against him, by bringing up an evil report against the land,

37 disse mennene som bar den dårlige rapporten om landet, døde av plagen foran Herren.

even those men who did bring up an evil report of the land, died by the plague before Yahweh.

38 Men Josva, sønn av Nun, og Kaleb, sønn av Jefunne, ble levende blant de mennene som gikk for å speide landet.

But Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, remained alive of those men who went to spy out the land.

39 Moses fortalte disse ordene til alle Israels barn, og folket sørget stort.

Moses told these words to all the children of Israel: and the people mourned greatly.

40 De sto tidlig opp om morgenen, gikk opp til toppen av fjellet og sa: Se, vi er her og vil gå opp til det stedet Herren har lovet, for vi har syndet.

They rose up early in the morning, and got them up to the top of the mountain, saying, Behold, we are here, and will go up to the place which Yahweh has promised: for we have sinned.

41 Moses sa: Hvorfor bryter dere nå Herrens befaling, siden det ikke vil lykkes?

Moses said, Why now do you disobey the commandment of Yahweh, seeing it shall not prosper?

42 Gå ikke opp, for Herren er ikke blant dere, slik at dere ikke blir slått ned av fiendene deres.

Don't go up, for Yahweh isn't among you; that you not be struck down before your enemies.

43 For der står amalekittene og kanaanittene foran dere, og dere skal falle for sverdet; fordi dere har vendt dere bort fra å følge Herren, derfor vil ikke Herren være med dere.

For there the Amalekite and the Canaanite are before you, and you shall fall by the sword: because you are turned back from following Yahweh, therefore Yahweh will not be with you.

44 Men de våget å gå opp til toppen av fjellet. Likevel forlot ikke Herrens paktens ark og Moses leiren.

But they presumed to go up to the top of the mountain: nevertheless the ark of the covenant of Yahweh, and Moses, didn't depart out of the camp.

45 Da kom amalekittene ned, og kanaanittene som bodde i fjellet, og slo dem og drev dem tilbake til Horma.

Then the Amalekite came down, and the Canaanite who lived in that mountain, and struck them and beat them down, even to Hormah.
