1 Og Gud talte alle disse ordene og sa:

`And God speaketh all these words, saying,

2 Jeg er Herren din Gud, som førte deg ut av Egypt, ut av trellehuset.

I `am' Jehovah thy God, who hath brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of a house of servants.

3 Du skal ikke ha andre guder enn meg.

`Thou hast no other Gods before Me.

4 Du skal ikke lage deg noe utskåret bilde eller noen avbildning av det som er i himmelen der oppe, eller på jorden her nede, eller i vannet under jorden.

`Thou dost not make to thyself a graven image, or any likeness which `is' in the heavens above, or which `is' in the earth beneath, or which `is' in the waters under the earth.

5 Du skal ikke tilbe dem eller tjene dem, for jeg, Herren din Gud, er en nidkjær Gud, som straffer fedrenes misgjerninger på barn i tredje og fjerde ledd, på dem som hater meg.

Thou dost not bow thyself to them, nor serve them: for I, Jehovah thy God, `am' a zealous God, charging iniquity of fathers on sons, on the third `generation', and on the fourth, of those hating Me,

6 Men jeg viser miskunn mot tusener, mot dem som elsker meg og holder mine bud.

and doing kindness to thousands, of those loving Me and keeping My commands.

7 Du skal ikke misbruke Herren din Guds navn, for Herren vil ikke holde den uskyldig som misbruker hans navn.

`Thou dost not take up the name of Jehovah thy God for a vain thing, for Jehovah acquitteth not him who taketh up His name for a vain thing.

8 Kom hviledagen i hu, så du holder den hellig.

`Remember the Sabbath-day to sanctify it;

9 Seks dager skal du arbeide og gjøre all din gjerning,

six days thou dost labour, and hast done all thy work,

10 men den sjuende dagen er sabbat for Herren din Gud. Da skal du ikke gjøre noe arbeid, verken du, din sønn eller din datter, din tjener eller tjenestepike, buskapen din eller innflytteren som bor i dine byer.

and the seventh day `is' a Sabbath to Jehovah thy God; thou dost not do any work, thou, and thy son, and thy daughter, thy man-servant, and thy handmaid, and thy cattle, and thy sojourner who is within thy gates, --

11 For på seks dager skapte Herren himmelen og jorden og havet og alt som er i dem, og han hvilte den sjuende dagen. Derfor velsignet Herren sabbatsdagen og helliget den.

for six days hath Jehovah made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that `is' in them, and resteth in the seventh day; therefore hath Jehovah blessed the Sabbath-day, and doth sanctify it.

12 Hedre din far og din mor, så dine dager kan bli mange i det landet Herren din Gud gir deg.

`Honour thy father and thy mother, so that thy days are prolonged on the ground which Jehovah thy God is giving to thee.

13 Du skal ikke drepe.

`Thou dost not murder.

14 Du skal ikke bryte ekteskapet.

`Thou dost not commit adultery.

15 Du skal ikke stjele.

`Thou dost not steal.

16 Du skal ikke vitne falskt mot din neste.

`Thou dost not answer against thy neighbour a false testimony.

17 Du skal ikke begjære din nestes hus. Du skal ikke begjære din nestes kone, hans tjener, hans tjenestepike, hans okse eller hans esel eller noe som hører din neste til.

`Thou dost not desire the house of thy neighbour, thou dost not desire the wife of thy neighbour, or his man-servant, or his handmaid, or his ox, or his ass, or anything which `is' thy neighbour's.'

18 Hele folket så lynene og flammene, hørte trompetlyden og så fjellet ryke. Folket så det og skalv, og de holdt seg på avstand.

And all the people are seeing the voices, and the flames, and the sound of the trumpet, and the mount smoking; and the people see, and move, and stand afar off,

19 De sa til Moses: «Tal du til oss, så vil vi høre, men la ikke Gud tale til oss, for da dør vi.»

and say unto Moses, `Speak thou with us, and we hear, and let not God speak with us, lest we die.'

20 Moses svarte folket: «Vær ikke redde! Gud er kommet for å sette dere på prøve, for at dere skal ha frykt for ham og ikke synde.»

And Moses saith unto the people, `Fear not, for to try you hath God come, and in order that His fear may be before your faces -- that ye sin not.'

21 Folket holdt seg på avstand mens Moses nærmet seg det tette mørket der Gud var.

And the people stand afar off, and Moses hath drawn nigh unto the thick darkness where God `is'.

22 Da sa Herren til Moses: «Dette skal du si til israelittene: Dere har sett at jeg har talt til dere fra himmelen.

And Jehovah saith unto Moses, `Thus dost thou say unto the sons of Israel: Ye -- ye have seen that from the heavens I have spoken with you;

23 Dere skal ikke lage dere noen sølvguder eller gullguder ved siden av meg.

ye do not make with Me gods of silver, even gods of gold ye do not make to yourselves.

24 Lag et alter av jord for meg og offer på det dine brennoffer og fredsoffer, ditt storfe og ditt småfe. På hvert sted hvor jeg lar mitt navn bli nevnt, vil jeg komme til deg og velsigne deg.

`An altar of earth thou dost make for Me, and thou hast sacrificed on it thy burnt-offerings and thy peace-offerings, thy flock and thy herd; in every place where I cause My name to be remembered I come in unto thee, and have blessed thee.

25 Hvis du bygger meg et alter av stein, skal du ikke bygge det av hugget stein, for hvis du svinger et verktøy over det, vanhelliger du det.

`And if an altar of stones thou dost make to Me, thou dost not build them of hewn work; when thy tool thou hast waved over it, then thou dost pollute it;

26 Og du skal ikke gå opp til mitt alter på trappetrinn, for at din nakenhet ikke skal bli avdekket på det.

neither dost thou go up by steps on Mine altar, that thy nakedness be not revealed upon it.
