1 I de dager kom Johannes Døperen, forkynnende i ødemarken i Judea,

And in those days cometh John the Baptist, proclaiming in the wilderness of Judea,

2 og sa: «Omvend dere, for himmelriket er kommet nær.»

and saying, `Reform, for come nigh hath the reign of the heavens,'

3 Dette er han som det er talt om ved profeten Jesaja: «En røst av en som roper i ødemarken: Forbered Herrens vei, gjør hans stier rette.»

for this is he who was spoken of by Isaiah the prophet, saying, `A voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, straight make ye His paths.'

4 Denne Johannes hadde klær av kamelhår og et lærbelte om hoftene, og hans mat var gresshopper og markhonning.

And this John had his clothing of camel's hair, and a girdle of skin round his loins, and his nourishment was locusts and honey of the field.

5 Da dro Jerusalem ut til ham, og hele Judea, og hele landet omkring Jordan,

Then were going forth unto him Jerusalem, and all Judea, and all the region round about the Jordan,

6 og de ble døpt av ham i Jordan, idet de bekjente sine synder.

and they were baptized in the Jordan by him, confessing their sins.

7 Da han så mange av fariseerne og saddukeerne komme til dåpen, sa han til dem: «Ormeyngel! Hvem har lært dere å flykte fra den kommende vreden?

And having seen many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming about his baptism, he said to them, `Brood of vipers! who did shew you to flee from the coming wrath?

8 Bær da frukt som er omvendelsen verdig.

bear, therefore, fruits worthy of the reformation,

9 Og tro ikke at dere kan si ved dere selv: Vi har Abraham til far. For jeg sier dere at Gud kan reise opp barn til Abraham av disse steinene.

and do not think to say in yourselves, A father we have -- Abraham, for I say to you, that God is able out of these stones to raise children to Abraham,

10 Nå er også øksen lagt ved roten av trærne; derfor blir hvert tre som ikke bærer god frukt, hogd ned og kastet i ilden.

and now also, the axe unto the root of the trees is laid, every tree therefore not bearing good fruit is hewn down, and to fire is cast.

11 Jeg døper dere med vann til omvendelse, men han som kommer etter meg, er sterkere enn jeg, og jeg er ikke verdig til å bære sandalene hans. Han skal døpe dere med Den Hellige Ånd og med ild.

`I indeed do baptize you with water to reformation, but he who after me is coming is mightier than I, of whom I am not worthy to bear the sandals, he shall baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire,

12 Han har sin vifte i hånden, og han skal rense sitt kornloft grundig. Han skal samle hveten i låven, men agnene skal han brenne opp med en ild som aldri slukkes.»

whose fan `is' in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his floor, and will gather his wheat to the storehouse, but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.'

13 Da kom Jesus fra Galilea til Jordan, til Johannes, for å bli døpt av ham.

Then cometh Jesus from Galilee upon the Jordan, unto John to be baptized by him,

14 Men Johannes prøvde å hindre ham og sa: «Jeg trenger å bli døpt av deg, og du kommer til meg?»

but John was forbidding him, saying, `I have need by thee to be baptized -- and thou dost come unto me!'

15 Men Jesus svarte og sa til ham: «La det nå skje; for slik er det passende for oss å oppfylle all rettferdighet.» Da lot han det skje.

But Jesus answering said to him, `Suffer now, for thus it is becoming to us to fulfill all righteousness,' then he doth suffer him.

16 Og da Jesus var blitt døpt, steg han straks opp fra vannet, og se, himlene åpnet seg for ham, og han så Guds Ånd komme ned som en due og komme over ham.

And having been baptized, Jesus went up immediately from the water, and lo, opened to him were the heavens, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon him,

17 Og en røst lød fra himlene: «Dette er min Sønn, den elskede, i ham har jeg velbehag.»

and lo, a voice out of the heavens, saying, `This is My Son -- the Beloved, in whom I did delight.'
